1.very friendly staff.
2.not over priced.
3.the bed was very comfortable and the room was not too small you could move around.
4.did not have to venture out could eat drink and sleep there.
5. near stansted airport.
6. they overcharged us, but emailed us and gave us a refund.
7. we stayed for 2 nights then rebooked on our return journey
8. would stay again.
9. beds need mattress cover rather than the sheet straight onto the matress.
10 nothing seemed too much trouble.

We stayed at the Cricketers arms with friends who have stayed there before, to be fair they thought it was as good as ever. I thought that maybe my expectations were to high for the area. The room was ok without being special in any way, we stayed in number one, which was much better than our friends room upstairs. No complaints about reception etc, casual but efficient and friendly. The room was clean and had a big TV which worked on all channels (from experience a major plus in the south and in many hotels). We dined that evening in the bar which was a major disappointment and very expensive compared with our home county of Shropshire a round of four drinks was a little short of £20 pounds compared with about £11 for the same round in Shropshire.
The menu was also quite disappointing although it appeared to have a wide choice it really had steak, pie, burger or fish (Thursday is fish night). Plenty of people were dining there so I assume that the Cricketers has a good reputation for food in the area so maybe we chose the wrong night. The atmosphere in the eating ares was noisy, but maybe again that's a local thing and we would not find better elsewhere. Our friends had a very average meat pie and I had a chicken and Ham burger with chips. Our friends were happy enough with the quality of the pie, the burger on the other hand had only one redeeming quality it was big. Overpriced over-cooked sawdust burger would have been a better description. One plate of very average food and one drink for four was a little under £90. If you must stay at the Cricketers eat somewhere else. Now the good news, the bed in number one has ' I think' a memory foam mattress and is without a doubt the best hotel bed I have slept in. To sum up, we spent two more nights in the area at other places, the prices for accommodation were much the same, but the food was better and much cheaper.

Room Tip: Room One was much better than seven

Having stayed here before and enjoyed the experience we decided to stay again. WHAT A MISTAKE. I could go on forever but I will lay out the worst points.
1 the room was unkept with thick dust and grime on every surface including skirting boards doors and bedside cabinets.
2 The shower head was useless with a bodged up shower curtain so you spent more time trying to keep the floor dry than cleaning yourself.
3 This was the worst nights sleep I have ever had, our room was next to the boiler which clearly had a major fault and every 10 minutes throughout the entire night sounded like a hammer drill going against the wall. Hence I had 1 hours sleep throughout the whole night. I took videos of this noise etc and showed the assistant manager the next morning who was horrified, I did manage to get a refund on the room and paid just for our food. I feel this was the right decision from the management but we will not stay there again.

Room Tip: stay away from room 6

Thank you for taking the time to review our pub.
I am very sorry your visit was not as good as your first one. We were doing some work and the window was left open and the room not checked. As you can see from most reviews and have experienced before, this is not our usual standard. Sorry again.

We stayed for a birthday weekend and had the family room. It's a lovely location, opposite the cricket field and close to local villages and towns. The food was very good and all round it was a lovely country escape and definitely recommended.

Booked the cricketers as we were looking for a place to stay that was close to the M11 as we needed a break in our journey back home to the North. The room was lovely with the most comfortable bed ever, with lovely crisp white linen. the pub itself was set in a picturesque village overlooking the village green, we had a very pleasant stay, they have a special night in the restaurant and monday was pie and a pud night that cost £14. I had the pork and mushroom pie and it was delightful. The staff were nice and friendly especially Emily who went out of her way to please us. Definately recommend this pub/ hotel as a reasonably nice clean place to stay.

Stayed for one night (Saturday) for a getaway break. Visited Saffron Walden and then onto the Cricketers. Beautiful day for early March - village looked lovely and the cricket pitch/green outside the hotel and the whole area was peaceful and relaxing.
The room (7) was comfortable and clean. Just being picky here but the ensuite bathroom (shower - no bath) could have done with a couple of rugs on the floor as tiled and chilly on the feet! Also shower cubicle will soon need a re-tile - but as I say just being fussy here!!
We ate dinner in the restaurant - bar area very comfortable - the food was delicious, well-presented and good choice on the menu. Waitressing staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Breakfast (included in the price) was also yummy with plenty of choice and very well cooked.
All in all a lovely night away - the only reason we didn't give an 'excellent' was because we thought the ensuite let the room down slightly - but food, service and comfort was EXCELLENT. We hope to visit again and next time perhaps catch a game of cricket!!

Stayed for just one night whilst on business in the area. The inn is beautiful. It overlooks the village green and cricket pitch and has an old world charm whilst being very modern and cosy inside. The roaring fire was so welcoming as were the staff after a long journey through the wind and the rain.

My room ( Room 9 ) was stunning....huge room with a very large comfortable bed, triple aspect windows overlooking the green and a state of the art high tech bathroom. It had everything I needed and more.

I did not eat at the inn as I had to be elsewhere but the food and menu looked very good.

Breakfast was superb served by a wonderful, engaging, charming young lady who would be an asset to any business. She was so kind to a family with small children at the table next to me ...and to me for that matter.

This place clearly has the formula for making people feel welcome and appreciated and this is down to their staff who were absolutely a credit to this lovely old inn.

I will certainly return next time I am in the area.
