“Nice stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

The Cricketers is classically located on a very pretty village green amid thatched houses and the cricket pavillion. The rooms above the pub were quiet and nicely decorated although the bathroom was of an unusual and old design. There was effective heating for which we were grateful. Staff were very helpful although wifi was an issue even downstairs in the pub. We had an excellent dinner in the restaurant and really enjoyed our stay.

We stayed here in August last year for one night and had a really pleasant room and excellent lunch and dinner. We are just getting over a recent death in the family and thought it would be good to spend a night again in such a beautiful location and enjoy the luxury of good food and comfy room. Unfortunately we had a noisy Chinese family for next door neighbours who at one stage appeared to have 6 people in their room. To make things worse one of the downstairs rooms was occupied by 2 men and a woman who appeared to be completely drunk most of the time with a stock of beer in their room. They also stood outside the back door smoking and making mobile calls so we got the dubious benefit of both activities through our open window on the first floor - it was a warm day/night but we had to close the window to get some peace.
In the morning the car park became busy and noisy with parents arriving and departing dropping their children off at the school next door.
All this really spoilt our stay and sadly we will not return. Our advice is to avoid rooms at the back especially 4/5/6 and brace yourself for the school run except at holiday times.

Room Tip: take a room at the front or side if possible. Rooms at the very back overlooking car park tend to be...

I stayed here on June 12th for 1 night and thought what a great place to stay. The room was very nice and though expensive for a single occupancy, the location and the pub itself made it worthwhile.I must also say that I had a good nights sleep and the bed was very comfortable. However when I came to use the toilet just before I retired I was shocked to see that soiling from a previous guest still remained. As it was very late and the bar closed I waiting until the morning to mention this. I am sure if I had come across this earlier the staff would have done something about it. The very polite lady who I settled my bill with said she would pass it on to her manager, but then said that the owners where in later that day and would contact me. I left her my phone number but as I have not heard anything from either the manager or the owners (it is now over a week) I feel that for the money they charge for B&B it is a very poor response to what I think is a very very poor way to leave a room that costs quite so much. I only feel the need to write this bad review, due to this lack of response from the owners. I am not looking for anything more than a discussion with the manager or owner as they need to know

After our disappointment with our hotel in Dover on the way to France, we decided to move out a little and stayed at the Cricketers Arms in Rickling Green. It is a lovely place, the rooms were immaculate, the meal in the restaurant was super as was the breakfast the following morning. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. For a Monday night, the pub and restaurant were busy so the locals must like it too. My husband left his Kindle in our room and we received a phone call from Reception and we arranged for it to be collected and delivered back to Yorkshire the following day. We were kept updated on the progress and it was delivered by courier with no problems. Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Only saw our room overlooking the cricket pitch.

We stayed at the Cricketers arms with friends who have stayed there before, to be fair they thought it was as good as ever. I thought that maybe my expectations were to high for the area. The room was ok without being special in any way, we stayed in number one, which was much better than our friends room upstairs. No complaints about reception etc, casual but efficient and friendly. The room was clean and had a big TV which worked on all channels (from experience a major plus in the south and in many hotels). We dined that evening in the bar which was a major disappointment and very expensive compared with our home county of Shropshire a round of four drinks was a little short of £20 pounds compared with about £11 for the same round in Shropshire.
The menu was also quite disappointing although it appeared to have a wide choice it really had steak, pie, burger or fish (Thursday is fish night). Plenty of people were dining there so I assume that the Cricketers has a good reputation for food in the area so maybe we chose the wrong night. The atmosphere in the eating ares was noisy, but maybe again that's a local thing and we would not find better elsewhere. Our friends had a very average meat pie and I had a chicken and Ham burger with chips. Our friends were happy enough with the quality of the pie, the burger on the other hand had only one redeeming quality it was big. Overpriced over-cooked sawdust burger would have been a better description. One plate of very average food and one drink for four was a little under £90. If you must stay at the Cricketers eat somewhere else. Now the good news, the bed in number one has ' I think' a memory foam mattress and is without a doubt the best hotel bed I have slept in. To sum up, we spent two more nights in the area at other places, the prices for accommodation were much the same, but the food was better and much cheaper.

Room Tip: Room One was much better than seven
