“Fantastic pub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2014 via mobile

This place is a fantastic gem. Everything about this place is great. The service is friendly - Alice was especially nice. A wonderful selection of local beer. Amazing atmosphere. Food is wonderful, tasty, and comes out piping hot. Went for lunch. Fish and chips were crispy. Ribs were nicely done. Fantastic chicken pie with flaky puffy pastry. I wish I could make pie like that! Nice coleslaw and beet salad. Highly recommended for a local pub experience

Thank Chris L

“A real gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

We have been here several times but I always forget to review it. Always a friendly welcome from the staff and always great food, whether lunch or evening meal. A great selection of main courses and sandwiches. You will always find something tasty, wholesome and very well presented. Once you've been here you will return. I guarantee it.

“Little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014 via mobile

We visited this local establishment for lunch, went back for evening drinks and then breakfast! The staff at The Crown are very friendly and welcoming; nothing is too much trouble for them. The food was cooked to a high standard and the breakfast was sublime. Generous portions, free flowing tea and toast - what more could you ask for?! We will definitely be going back and next time, we will stay.

One of the good things about The Crown is that it has diversified to meet modern needs while keeping most of its village pub character. There is a warm welcome, cosy corners, a friendly atmosphere, locals dropping in and a good selection of ales, beers and wines. If you want to relax quietly over a book there is a mini library with a very catholic choice of reading – The Bible, Good Pub Guides, bound copies of the Transactions of the Civil Engineers and novels by long-forgotten 1930s writers. Or something more lively? There is jazz from 8.00 on Wednesday evenings.

There is also food, which is central to the offer that makes The Crown so attractive. Sandwiches, snacks and a good range of home cooked food are available at lunchtime and in the evenings until 9.00 pm. When we went, after a walk in the attractive rolling countryside, friends had very generous filled baguettes; N said the king prawns were excellent; and I can recommend the whitebait with a glass of white wine as a light lunch.

The Crown makes a good stopping off point on a visit to this rather forgotten part of north Essex where local character has not been sacrificed to some metropolitan sameness. Saffron Walden, Linton Zoo and Audley End are all nearby.

“Lovely friendly pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2014 via mobile

Stayed here for two nights Friday and Saturday. Had sandwich lunch and evening meal. Both were great and excellent value with good sized portions. The ale is straight from the cask from the back of the bar and was excellent too. They had Abbot, Adnams Best and Broadside and Woodforde's Wherry. The pub is very dog friendly and most of the regulars seemed to have a dog with them. The room was clean and comfortable if a little on the small side, the floorboards were quite creaky. Breakfast was delicious with cereal toast tea coffee juice and Full English.

Overall a lovely pub with very welcoming staff. Will definitely recommend and use again if we find ourselves in the area.

Thank Richie T
