Highly recommended by local staff, we popped into Coucou for lunch. It's nicely sized, with lots of small tables one of which we were lucky to get space at upstairs nestled in corner but with views out onto the street. Staff are friendly & give good advice on menu options, and were always busy but without seeming too rushed & maintaining a lovely level of service.

I had the most delicious doorstop sandwich, large GI grainy bread, filled with brie & grape and with a nicely dressed mixed leaves on the side. They really fill you up but on quality ingredients. Shared an apricot frangipane - huge selection of cakes & pastries. Everyone around us seemed to be having a nice time too & compliments for the food & empty plates were in abundance.

I followed recommendations and wasn't disappointed!

A small but perfect cafe. We often drop in here for brunch whilst shopping on a Saturday. The homemade fare is simply delicious. The cakes to die for. I always have one of their open sandwiches, which fill you up for the rest of the day. Simply the best cafe in Saffron walden

Wonderful cafe serving the biggest sandwiches and the best cakes. I can personally recommend the millionaires shortbread and the chocolate flapjack....make sure you leave space!

Cafe CouCou offers extremely tasty and unusual food and the bread in particular is worthy of a special mention. It was nice to have a quiche in crisp filo pastry and everything was very fresh. As a popular cafe, it gets crowded and the tables are rather small and cramped but the food makes it all worth while. The service is what you might expect from young and relatively inexperienced staff.

We were greeted by a busy restaurant, where we had to wait 5 mins before someone came to clear the table from their last customers. We were eventually addressed by an over zealous waiter who needed to calm down. His conversation was verging on rude. He proceeded to take away the plates and then brushed the crumbs straight onto the floor. We taking our order he rudely I trusted to talk to another couple. He then asked us to move table upstairs to make room for other customers. We were greater agin by another dirty table and eventually when the young waitress came to our table, she too simply swept the detritus on to the floor! I took this opportunity to explain to her that we had been asked to move tables and that our order had been taken downstairs, foreseeing the potential for confusion. It was a further 15mins before out milkshake a arrived. We sat and waited over 30mins before, getting quite frustrated I asked a waitress where our order was? I was told it was on its way but 5 mins later another waiter returned to say our order had never been placed and they had in fact now sold out of the dish I had ordered. After an hour of wasted time, we simply left, severely frustrated and still hungry.
