We visited Rockingham a couple of years ago and saw the amazing `handkerchief` tree. We wanted to see if it had flowered again this year, it only flowers if the conditions are right, in order to take the children. Nothing mentioned on the Rockingham web site although the trees are mentioned as one of the things to see there. We rang repeatedly and the phone was not answered even though the Castle was open. We left a message as requested but no~one returned the call. We went elsewhere! It would be so easy to post information on the web site. Cotton Manor Gardens always posts when the Bluebells are out.

First time visit to the castle for me. Maybe entrance fee a little steep for the time you get there. Went on a tour led by a charming informative gentleman called Tom as advised by the lady at reception in the house. The gardens were lovely. Tom's facts were interesting. The house was beautiful and i'm very envious of the family living there now. Cafe was charming. Shame there was no outdoor seating as it was hot today. Please put Afternoon tea on the menu. A farm shop would make a mint selling local produce, and if you make your own scones, they would fly off the shelf. Very enjoyable afternoon. Will come back next year or for an event you are holding.

We walked to the entrance of Rockingham castle to visit on this Sunday Bank holiday morning at eleven clock only to find that the castle is not open to the public until 1PM.
So we were unable to visit the castle on this occasion and visited elsewhere instead.
Surly the Rockingham castle should be open to the public by 11PM

We visited the castle grounds today using our HHA cards. I have been several times in the past.

The gardens near the castle are very formal and manicured. We were in the period after the tulips have gone over and before the roses bloom, so not many flowers to see compared to other stately homes last weekend. That said, the elephant hedge is a real showstopper and there are lovely views of the surrounding countryside.

The wild gardens were very “up and down”, somewhat tricky underfoot at times, but most enjoyable with a huge variety of trees to see. The pond is very midgey and my husband got bitten.

They are missing a trick by not having any outdoor seating at the café. Inside felt a bit dingy and it was far too nice a day to sit indoors anyway, so we didn’t bother.

It is worth knowing that Rockingham accepts dogs on short leads which is unusual and pleasing.

This is not a theme park so not for people not interested in nearly 2,000 years of history.
The gardens, and views as well as the castle itself are stunning. As a bonus, there is some amazing 20th century art. The DVD giving a "news update" of the key occurrences in history.
The cafe is excellent, the staff friendly and the prices not too expensive.
