Just a quick, Friday evening meal this time. On a reluctant spring night with the snow lying and an easterly wind blowing along Wensleydale, we found a cosy settle, the constant log fire, candlelight, linen napkins and delightful food. As ever Paul Klein was not too busy to check that the food, wine and service was up to scratch.

For those hoping for consummate service and a safe pair of hands, The Blue Lion always makes an average Joe feel above average.

Thank you.

We stayed for 3 nights in March 2013, in a courtyard room.

As a couple in our 40s, we wanted a quiet and relaxing place to get away from our two small children for a few days .... and that's exactly what we got. At that time of year only 4 or 5 rooms were occupied, mostly by middle-aged (or older) couples, which meant that evenings were lovely and quiet. The dining can be wonderfully informal by the open wood fires in the bar area - we read our books and did our crossword as we leisurely ate - or more formal in the restaurant. Our courtyard room was well appointed, and we don't recognise the negative comments made by others.

It is not a cheap place, mind - our three nights including two dinners and 3 breakfasts came to £400 .... and we ate and drank with an eye to the prices. However, for a special treat it was worth it.

Room Tip: Courtyard room very quiet

Weekend here for my wife's 40th with friends-Superb! Room was lovely (picture on the home page/classic double)-clean, attractive, spacious, nice view. Pub is a period property with loads of character and a great location for the beautiful Dales (don't go if you want raucous nightlife and loud music). Food was really great in both bar & restaurant and an extensive breakfast menu with kipper & haddock options which was nice to see alongside more conventional choices. Staff were helpful, friendly and not intrusive-a hard balance sometimes-and helped out with the surprise birthday cake cheerfully! We will most certainly return and the break has provided really great memories of a fab weekend- Thanks Blue Lion!

Room Tip: On booking we were offered main property or courtyard and our experience in the main property was re...

We stayed here for a couple of nights with our dog and experienced a friendly welcome, a dog friendly pub for meals, great food, a comfy bed, and really good, affordable wine list. We sat in the pub for both our evening meals and the ambience was superb, open wood fires adding to the overall effect. The staff were really friendly and as an added bonus really liked Jakey Boy the Airedale!! Both our evening meals were excellent - tasty and freshly cooked. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: We had a court yard room which was nice and quiet

I understand the rooms in this hotel are to be refurbished and judging by ours not before time .The room was dark and dated ,there was nowhere with an electric point to sit and use the hair dryer but my main complaint was the bedding which surely does not need to wait for the refurb to be replaced. The linens were rather old thin polyester ,the duvet flat and flabby and the pillows flat ,flabby and hard! I have encountered this type of bedding in B and Bs which charge half of the room rate at the Blue Lion!

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room!

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay. Customer feedback is very important to us and as a result I have bought replacement duvets and pillows for all our bedrooms. I am slightly cconfused by the reference to polyester sheets though, as we have only ever used 100% cotton.
I'm sorry that you were disappointed with your bedroom. We do have quite a variety of rooms , some of which are a more contemporary style rather than traditional. If you would like to book again in the future, we would be happy to talk through the different options with you beforehand.

This is one of our favorite places to eat and despite an hours drive, we think it worth it. The atmosphere is great and the open fires provide welcome comfort at this time of year. However, I didn't think the food was quite up to scratch on our last visit. I had steak and kidney pudding and whilst it was ok, I was expecting something better. We'll give it another go sometime and see it it was a blip.

Thank you for your comments regarding the steak and kidney pudding. We do work hard to maintain the highest standards of food, and I'm sorry that on this occasion you were disappointed. We hope to see you again and show that this, as you suggest, was just a blip.

The setting, the ambience, the bar area (lovely for eating by candlelight with an open fire) and the phased refurbishment all combine to make this a perfect spot for a weekend stay. Near the Dales; walking file available with laminated A5 sheets - very many walks are from the pub's front door. Rooms in the new-builds (in well-blended Yorkshire stone) are outside. Have a look at Room 15 with country views, large TV and leather sofa.

New stair carpets going down as we speak; refurbs of bedrooms in the main pub building look lovely.

Then there's the food and wine. Just great...not to mention the breakfast too.

Would I make this a regular stopping place...absolutely!
