“5 star, almost!”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

Spent the weekend here, courtesy of my lovely wife. Exceptionally good overall, but one or two areas of potential improvement.
The food, pricey...but worth it. Top tip...live in ...very good inclusive deal!
Good bar prices...except the wine...very pricey...but again...for very good wine.
Accommodation...room clean and well decorated, excellent bedlinen (excepting slightly soft but high quality down pillows) , and quality toiletries.
Room 8 relatively quiet and restful until family( noisy child) crisis downstairs shattered the peace on night one (these things happen!) , second night blissful.....until 7.00 when the extractor fan in the main kitchen kicked in.
Service...exemplary...from every member of the team!
Will we return?
With a few tweaks...change of room? Try and stop us!

Room Tip: Stable block, ground floor .10, 11, 12.

We have just returned from the Blue Lion, to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The service from start to finish was appalling. We waited 1hr between eating our starter and the main course arriving, when it finally arrived it was Luke warm and mediocre, the 1 potato on my plate was hard and lukewarm. Not once were we asked if we were enjoying our meal, the waiter didn't bother to pour the wine which I think is standard in most good restaurants, the head waiter was miserable and a smile would not have gone amiss, when we went to reception to pay, the woman thrust the bill at us and said "check that if you would", again, we still weren't asked if we had enjoyed our meal. The only person who deserves some praise was the young man behind the bar. Definitely not worth a visit, people who spend their hard earned money in restaurant's should at least be given a good service and a smile. Sorry but we wouldn't recommend the food or the restaurant, who wants to be served by miserable staff and be served middle of the road food.

we stayed one night, and wished we could have stayed longer! we were looking for a decent pub that would look after us and our dog, we really landed on our feet! the pub has a lovely feel to it lots of history and not a hint of chain pub's contrived age. we ate early and the food was fantastic we had the Mussels to start and duck to follow both dishes first class, a really nice touch was we wanted to relax in our room and so asked if we could take a plate of cheese to the room the lovely young waitress insisted on taking it up for us and again the cheese was fab! in the morning we wanted not to shut our dog in the car so asked if we could eat in the bar not the restaurant again the staff were great nothing was too much trouble, they laid a table for us and made sure we were looked after. We must have been a bit painful as guests but were the staff were lovely. Great food, great staff, great pub!

Room Tip: Room 9 was fine for us very quiet, maybe a bit small if you were staying a week.

We stayed there this weekend for two nights as local friends had recommended it. We were really looking forward to it until we got there. Our first impression of the room was a smell of damp, followed by seeing a very dirty, stained carpet. The kind of room where you don't want to take your socks off. The small double bed had an old mattress with polyester sheets covered in a stained bedcover. The curtains didn't fit the windows so we couldn't block out the light early in the morning. The bathroom was very dated, with cracked walls and a shower that leaked. The dining room was equally tired although our breakfast was delicious! We were served by a very grumpy man who reeked of cigarettes. Altogether very poor-it reminded me of B&Bs twenty years ago-the owners really need to give the place a makeover.

We booked this inn based on the rave reviews and The Good Pub Guide award so we were really looking forward to our stay. Our room was well equipped and comfortable although rather dark, the windows being small and quite high. There was an excellent bath and shower, good fluffy towels and White Company toiletries. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room are always appreciated. We had a drink in the garden and anticipated and excellent dinner. Sadly the food was very ordinary, queenie scallops smothered in thick stringy cheese, a poached pear and blue cheese beignet which was tasteless and cold. The duck breast was tough although the smoked haddock with cream sauce and poached egg was tasty. Puddings were ok but not memorable. There was a large party in the main dining room so perhaps the chef's attention was diverted.
Lovely staff and a delightful location. Shame about the food.

We've been coming here for years and will continue to do so. The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Book the dining room if you want something more formal, but eating in the bar has it's own charm.

I do not normally write reviews but in this case I make an exception. My wife and I are frequent visitors to The Blue Lion and having been for dinner twice in the last month, the quality of the food and service was exceptional and the attention to detail, spot on. All the staff were efficient, polite and friendly and the atmosphere in the bar was buzzing. I find it difficult to fault and would not hesitate to recommend the The Blue Lion, especially in this age of silly themed pubs and picture food!

Room Tip: Book early to avoid disappointment and eat in the bar, best table is near the fire.
