“Awesome location”
Reviewed 15 September 2013

We have just stayed one night, not as part of a walking holiday but to go to a wedding nearby. The location is stunning, stones throw from beach and we happened to get a sea view, which was lovely. The hotel was a bit rough round the edges, but our room was clean and comfy and we slept well. No chance of a lie in as all the walkers seemed to get up early even on a sunday and we happened to be above the dining room!
All in all, a nice room in a lovely location.

We recently returned from a week at Nether Grange. We booked through HF Holidays who operate the hotel/guest house. Because we have enjoyed simillar holidays elswhere we knew what to expect - sharing tables for meals and the "country house" style indeed that is part of the charm of this type of holiday.

We upgraded to a premier room which did not dissapoint very spacious and a great view. Breakfasts were fine a good choice and always hot, we had excellent packed lunches every day and dinners were fine. We did have some criticisms of the way the vegetables were served but nothing that we couldn't cope with.

The house is showing signs of it's age - but aren't we all.

Room Tip: Go for the upgrade if tis available

Having read that Nether Grange was akin to a Youth Hostel I was a little concerned before we checked in but I should realise by now that TripAdvisors reviewers are liable to have their weekends ruined by the pettiest of details.

It was lovely. A really beautiful building with an incredible view. I've uploaded a picture of our room view with this review plus the lovely window seat beneath it. The room, far from being hostel-like seemed freshly decorated. The bathroom was spotless and large and included a sizeable bath. There was a flat screen TV in the room and a large comfy sofa too. Despite being in the furthest flung corner of the hotel the room was almost of suite size.

The location is just fantastic. Right on the front. Beside it is their fantastic Dandelion Cafe that is a great hang out and does the best coffee I've tasted anywhere in Northumberland (my wife owns two coffee shops so I'm a fair judge). A street back from NG is a string of lovely country pubs with fantastic food. Also worth noting that the breakfasts at NG were also great.

In the end the hostel comparison I guess comes from the fact that this is an HF Holidays property. I booked through Late Room so didn't know of the organisations or the association. On the plus side you get a laid back, non-stuffy atmosphere. On the negative side you all have to sit together at large tables for breakfast which, if you are on a quiet weekend away, really doesn't work. If we'd stayed more than a couple of nights I'd have been tempted to skip it.

In general the communal eating was a bit odd and it's the only thing that might put me off returning. A few smaller tables for those not on group trips would be welcomed. Making small talk is just too hard at that time in the morning.

Beyond that and some very clunky WIFI it was still too lovely to knock it down to four stars. A great place to stop for wonderful Alnmouth.

Room Tip: Room 27 was gorgeous and with the view and the lovely bathroom it'd be hard to beat (it was a tw...

Our group leader had a phone call on the way home to say I`d left spectacles behind. When I got home I asked if they would send them on & I`d reimburse postage etc. After about a fortnight I had heard nothing so I sent them a stamped addressed padded bag with a request could they pop them in post. All they had to do was put the glasses in the packet (they were in a hard case) & stick it in the post box - months later I`ve still heard nothing.

We used to use HF a lot but not anymore, they`ve really gone downhill

I thoroughly agree with other comments on the good food and friendly staff at the Grange.. Few problems though, there is no parking for the Hotel and you have to take your chances finding street parking. This may mean a bit of distance between the Hotel and your car.
Not too happy with the room either. There where holes in the ceiling and wallpaper coming off the walls. The bathroom had no shower and was fitted with a pink 1980's whirlpool bath. ( whirlpool not working, suspect for years). Heavy corrosion around the bath overflow and rusty around plug hole. Considering the price that HF charge I expected a lot better.
Complained to the Manager, who thanked me for bring it to his attention as he did not inspect the rooms himself and had no ideal of their condition? They did stick the wallpaper down and fill the holes in the ceiling next day.
General poor standard of maintenance around the place, random wires hanging from the walls outside, no attempt to match repairs or do a tidy job.

Just loved a night here on our way North . Full of friendly interesting guests . Amazing food . The staff are so friendly and helpful . We had a great room and although it wasn't ensuite there were plenty of facilities very handy and the views from our room were to die for . If you've never heard of HF look them up and get booked on one of their amazing holidays .

40+ of us had a club holiday here & all had a wonderful time
Nothing was too much trouible for the staff
The food was good, but make sure you sit on one of the smaller tables
On the larger tables one can't reach the "Lazy Susan" & it appears that the same quantity on veg is given to each table.
The only food problem was that the breakfast toast was nearly always cold.
