Self Drive, Welcoming was very pleasant and our upgraded superior sea view room was worth every penny, a relaxing break after touring for the previous week was ensured. hotel food was very basic but still value for money, the hotel was very quiet during the day after the coach parties had left on their excursions but we enjoyed the seaside walks and the nearby golf club supplied excellent lunches or afternoon teas. Driving to Ullapool on the coast route took us through beautiful scenery with the mountain tops full of a recent fall of snow and another short drive through the village to the lighthouse on a narrow road was an experience, unfortunately a stop at a hotel on route was closed.
Entertainment at the hotel was fine and the provision of the four drinks per person per day cards as part of the package was well appreciated

Room Tip: Sea Views a must

We have been to Gairloch three times with Shearings one of the best locations for watching the dolphins from the hotel restaurant, friendly staff .Very good drivers, Cant wait to to go again.
Take a trip on the Westerbus tour around Applecross with Colin who will tell you all about Gairloch and the surrounding area, and its a fun day out

Room Tip: Get a sea view and look out for the dolphins in the bay

Shearings give amazing value - and we thoroughly enjoyed our self-drive week at Gairloch. Okay, the hotel is fairly basic - it must be so difficult maintaining Victorian buildings, especially those exposed to the Scottish elements - but we'd a great time, were very comfortable, ate well and felt we'd certainly had our money's worth. The location of the hotel is incredible, looking out over the Minch to Skye and Lewis & Harris. Gannets dived in front of us in Gairloch Bay and the beach down a small cliff in front of the hotel was full of birdlife, including delightful oystercatchers. Our rooms were pleasant, comfortable and quiet. Meals were varied and good - not fine dining but nevertheless of a very good standard for what we were paying. The staff were nice and helpful, and the entertainment enjoyable. We walked from the hotel - delightful walks along the coast and up to waterfalls, and we toured by car. Inverewe Gardens are superb. We'd a lovely late-afternoon drive up to Melvaig - to a wonderfully-unique pub overlooking the sea - and down on the beach from there we had terrific views of an otter hunting in the water. We'd a really enjoyable and affordable week in this very special part of Scotland.

Room Tip: worth paying a little more for a sea-view room

We have just returned from a Shearings Holiday at the Bay Gairloch Hotel. We have tried a number of Shearings Hotels and found this was the best of the bunch.

We paid a bit extra to get a sea view and it was brilliant. The room was clean and well furnished. The TV was a bit small but we did not have time to watch it. The food was quite good and the service was quick. The staff, mostly East European, were friendly and helpful.

There was free wine with dinner and four drinks vouchers each per day which was more than enough for us.

The entertainment from Mondays to Thursdays was low key but not great. There is a large quiet lounge with a large screen TV if you want it.

There are nice walks round the hotel but there is not much nearby.

We went on an optional trip to Apple Cross on a local coach and it was super. The scenery was the best I have ever seen. It was Scotland at its best. The included trip to Inverness was a waste of time and I wouldn't go there again. It is dull and depressing.

All in all we had a great holiday and if you want to see the highlands and the scenery you could not do better than this hotel.

Room Tip: Pay a little bit more for a sea view. It is well worth it.
