we have just come back from a shearings holiday to gairloch in the highlands of scotland, oh my word it was gorgeous, the weather was extremely kind up to 26 on one day and the otherdays were not much cooler. the hotel gairloch is a large airy building ,the bar ,lounge, dance floor reception and quiet lounge are large high ceiling rooms with beautiful views over the bay. the dining room is also large with allocated tables that you keep for the duration of your stay. the staff are polite hardworking and with the aid of hand signals could usually get the drift of what you wanted, we had a 3 course breakfast every day and a 3 course evening meal with the exception of wednesday when it is a 4 course meal, we had a twin bedded room with a shower an adequate room at the back of the hotel which was a bonus as it was nice and cool when we returned in the afternoon, there was a radiator if you needed it the driver was very knowledgeable and made the excursions good fun , on the way back home he gave so much info on the regions we were passing through and it made the long journey home bearable. would go again in a heartbeat

Room Tip: as far as i know ,all good

One of the best British holidays we have experienced, the management and staff were second to none the meals were perfectly prepared and delicious, the entertainment was also first class.. The trips out gave scenery to die for a beautiful location and we also had some lovely fellow
passengers on the coach which was the icing on the cake. All in all a fantastic break. We will be returning soon for more of the same,

Room Tip: a front room facing the sea.

Just back from a holiday with Shearings. The hotel is in an ideal place, half way between the village and harbour. We arrived late, (9pm), and the restaurant was kept open for our evening meal. (This was needed after the 14 hour journey to get there, but did have various breaks). The staff were helpful and friendly. We paid extra for a sea view and was worth it - the view over to sky was wonderful and the sunsets really set it off.
If given the chance take the optional tour to Applecross, it's a lovely place.
It's a good tour for a good chance at spotting wildlife, we had a cuckoo calling from the hills the back of the hotel.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view. Take the optional tour to Applecross if given the chance.

Had another great holiday at this hotel. Some of the Dining Room staff seem to have a poor command of English this year and have not got up to speed with keeping an eye on who has entered the dining room. Food for us was good when we got it. Bar staff were friendly and efficient. A lot of people comment on this site that it is run down and shabby yes it could do with some redecoration but our room was clean and serviced daily. This is a lovely Victorian building and only open regretfully for part of the year. The village of Gairloch is just the place to rewind your batteries in this hectic world we live in. Beautiful scenery and friendly locals. Lovely Golf course nearby that welcomes visitors ShearingsTrips out were the usual value for money unfortunately our day at Inverewe gardens and Ullapool was blighted by rain and a broken down coach both of which could not be helped . Entertainment was good and we enjoyed ourselves with fellow passengers, friends old and new. Some guests seem to relish in finding fault. The overnight stay on the way home was good staying at The Bay Tarbet Hotel. Another lovely setting in the banks of Loch Lomond. The second day of our homeward journey was spoilt by an over 2 and a half hours wait at Gretna, again it was pouring rain. If the practice of joining both the North West and North East Coaches here is to become regular then better organization and shelter for passengers is a must. There is only so much time you can spend in the café drinking coffee. Having said all that we still hope to return again in the future to this lovely spot on the West Coast.

Good hotel and a great location for getting out and about the staff were helpfull but one or two need to know a little bit more english but saying that the young Spanish girl in the restaurant is very nice so take your time to talk to her. Nice view from our room. They could do with a few tables and chairs outside for the summer.

we had a room at the rear overlooking coach park with mountains above so not too bad. the room was a good size, beds not top quality but comfortable, furniture was adequate with everything we needed. The Bathroom walls were covered with old wall paper and fittings were also old with no shower attachment in the bath so hair washing difficult. So if the bathroom was updated with tiles and new fittings, it would be quite nice. The lift was not working while we were there and as this hotel caters mainly for older people many must have struggled.
Breakfast was not the best we've had, it is typically Shearings and OK. Dinner ... some meals were quite good others were just OK, the mixed vegetables were not at all nice, again very typical of a Bay Hotel.
This Hotel is in a fantastic location just across the road from a lovely sandy bay and mountains behind with lovely walks, details available from the Tourist Office just up the road.
This Hotel was a prestigious place to stay in the past and could be again with a change of ownership and a total refurbishment, but it is value for money and we would be quite happy to return.
The trips out, organised by Shearings, from this Hotel were quite good if you don't mind sitting on a coach for long periods, however Dean the driver was new to Shearings and had limited knowledge of the area we noticed a big difference when we were taken out by local drivers with years of experience. It is a long way to Gairloch and it was made even longer by a diversion off the M1 along the M6 to pick up additional customers at Corley Services. and on the return journey we travelled from Gairloch to Perth a 4 hour drive with no stops, so with more consideration given to the comfort of customers a Shearings Coach Holiday could be so much better.

Room Tip: our friends stayed in room 1 refurbished and very nice.

The hotel itself is located in one of the most stunning areas of the highlands you could wish for. The receptionist on our arrival was most pleasing and helpful, as we had arrived early she made us tea and coffee as we had tae wait for our rooms but not too long. The décor of the hotel and general appearance is dated and needs a spruce up. Our room was ample frae our needs and the bed was comfortable worth paying the extra, view is excellent over the bay. The toilet however was clean but the fan was full of dust and muck cleaning it ourselves it became evident that it is not on the housekeeping's list of things tae do, we pointed this out tae the lady and she informed us that it would be pointed out to the staff.

Meals were on the most good and hearty but choice is limited, excellent service from the staff but please remember that when serving food it should not be stacked up one on top of the other as cross contamination could be caused from the underside of serving platters lying on the food below. I know why they do it as it is easier tae carry many to avoid distance to table. The bar is well stocked and comfortable and going inclusive with the 4 drinks is a useful idea, saves forking oot monies every time. We did nae partake of the entertainment as it is nae our thing but what I heard and saw is alright. One little thing though can you please pass on tae the entertainers that shouting abuse at passing guests frae a cheap aside is demeaning and I did nae bother with the clown who did it, nae P.C. in todays climate.

The main bugbear at this hotel is the lack of a proper smoking area as guests congregate at the front of the hotel and the aroma drifts right through the place, making a very bad first impression when entering. I spoke tae the manager aboot most things and he commented that there was nae money allocated for a smoking area, Shearing's as a point of principle you need tae do something soonest and establish smoking areas away from the front of house and a cover frae guests tae use on bad weather days as they will still only use the main door alcove!

Overall the stay was good and worth the money, the area is excellent and best places frae us were Attadale gardens, Inverewe, Corieshalloch falls and the road frae Kinlochewe tae Torridon and beyond is wonderful.

Room Tip: Pay extra frae sea view and all inclusive.
