Fabulous room, decorated in blue and cream, lovely bathroom with antique style bath and robes, very comfy bed, good choice at breakfast, kind and helpful staff, would definitely recommend. Very good value at the price paid, but we did have special offer, couldn't have afforded the full price! Meals available in bar or restaurant, good selection, well cooked. Quiet location in the middle of Exmoor national park

This Pub with rooms and restaurant is set in a tiny Exmoor village. There is this one pub a village shop (very welcoming, friendly proprietors), wonderful walking and riding country as soon as you step out of the front door.
It had lost its way and was mediocre and declining til it was acquired by the owners of the Tarr Steps Hotel. In the last year it has climbed back up to its former popularity and is a gem of a true country pub. The people and staff are friendly. The bars are genuine olde world with a genuine olde world barman - Jake, who will along with his waiting staff, serve you great food and Exmoor ale. You will have to book food at the weekends.
Wonderful weekend retreat - and no mobile signal!! Yeah.

The Royal Oak is set in the picturesque village of Withypool. If you are into walking the location will be perfect with lots of good routes to Tarr Steps and Lancare literally on the door step. There was a good car park for patrons with plenty of space. The pub itself is very charming and has lots of countryside ambience.
We were booked in for New Years Eve. When checking in we had to ask for the room to be re hoovered( but this hotel does except dogs and they are allowed in rooms which was great for our spaniel) However the receptionist had that done straight away while we walked the dog. We also had to ask for 2 towels as they were missing but again apologies were given and they arrived promptly. The room was of a good standard and had amazing views over the River Barle ( Room 8)
What was a bit of shock was that the normal bar menu had been removed for the evening and there was a special menu. This is understandable for New Years Eve but we had not been informed of it at booking and we were not the only couple by the looks of things. But again the Manageress was very helpful and accomodated us with a different eating arrangement. The evening food was of an excellent standard.
This is the sister pub of the Tarr Steps Hotel and when booking at Tarr Farm we had a deposit taken off our card without being told about it even though I asked if it was just to hold the room. It would seem that this hotel spacks of potential and I am sure that they have lots of happy customers, they just need staff who communicate procedure to guests at the time of booking. The Manageress who I think was called Jeanette was a very good host.
Overall we had a really nice time here and look forward to our visit with the sister Hotel Tarr Farm in Feb 08 but I would recommend this as a treat as there are some excellent Farm B&B;s in the area that some may consider to be better value for money.

Really enjoyed our 1 night stay at the Royal Oak Withypool. Meal in the bar (from the restauarnt menu) was superb - firts class. Best English breakfast I've had for years.

Would definitely recommend. We will be going back in near future.

I have stayed at the Royal Oak many times and always had an high standard of service and facilities. Visiting on two occasions recently I have found the choice of menu to be either very poor, or non existent. I arrived at 1.00pm on a Sunday to be told that they were not serving food. Several other friends have had a similar experience. I have written to complain twice and received no reply. Once a gem of the moor, now a place to be avoided.

We have stayed at the Royal Oak twice before and loved it. However, it appears to have been sold out to a chain of hotels and although the pub itself is still very welcoming, attention to detail has slipped. The room was not particularly clean, the promised bathrobes consisted of one belt (!), there was a television with no arial attached and hence no picture. The wardrobe contained an inadequate 3 hangers.
The restaurant used to serve high quality food. The menu now offers pub food - mostly steaks and fish and chips. Breakfast is better.

Setting of the inn in Withypool is of course lovely with beautiful walks from the door. The beds remain comfortable and the staff generally welcoming. Unfortunately though I can no longer regard it as a special place.
