This Pub situated in Wythypool offers a friendly welcome, good atmosphere. We have eaten here many times and always found the food to be of a very high standard.

“A Tale of Two Sittings”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

A Tale Of Two Sittings…

A short break on Exmoor and after a wet walk from Tarr Steps arrived here hoping for a hearty snack. The pub is wonderfully untouched with aged pictures, period furniture, well worn tiles and a cosy little fire..A real delight. We had baguettes which were generous and just the job .The lady behind the bar was warm and welcoming.Five stars all the way.
As we had been delighted we decided to book and bring three guests the following evening for dinner. The web site menu looked just the ticket and what could go wrong?

We walked in and told the chap behind the bar we were here. Not a hint of a welcome in fact more of a frosty glare.Made my wife and I feel we were a nuisance .Gave the impression that he hated his job and given that this was apparently the new owner did not inspire confidence.I ordered a diet coke which was a small mixer bottle. It was flat.I ordered a pint of ‘Smoothflow’ to be told ‘You mean Tetley’s?’ Quite sarcastic.Returned the coke and got another without the benefit of ice.Oh dear he really is not in the right job.

The offered menu was **totally different** from the one on the website. No other options offered.I asked ‘Are there any Specials’ to be told by the waiter ‘Theyr’re all special’.That’ll probably be a no then.

The food arrived ,all basic pub fayre but not worth it.My mixed grill was some very salty gammon, overcooked lamb chop,a mushroom a venison steak which I had not anticipated and did not like and chips from a catering bag.I think there were some packet peas too.The only ‘Sauces’ were Colemans English and French Mustard. Which were banged down in front of us on the table. My mother had ordered the same and was similarly disappointed.Perhaps I should have asked what was in the mixed grill as both of us don’t like venison..The other meals showed that there was not a real chef in the kitchen that night and given that the restaurant next door was empty I assume they may have been given the night off..A final shame was that the fire had not been lit.

This is a lovely little pub.Our food was a disappointment and the service was awful….suggest they sort their web site out too.

Arrived without booking and were shown to the only table unreserved at opening time on Sunday evening. Excellent roast beef with fantastic variety of fresh vegetables.
