On holiday in the area this year, we ate at quite a new very nice place in Allerford called Cross Lane House and enjoyed good quality food there, but we also ate in Porlock Weir twice since it was only a short walk to there. On both occasions we ate out of the Cross; I say 'out of' since although we have eaten there before and enjoyed it, the best thing they do is a £5 fish and chips in a small cardboard box. It is a lot for fish and chips, but they are really good chips and beautifully battered fish – a great thing to take and sit on the benches on the edge of the stony beach on a warm evening. I'm not sure when they started doing plastic forks instead of wooden ones, but this was the only downside as they are not the most sturdy for when the batter is a bit thicker. They are habit formingly good and have become a tradition when we come to the area – we just make sure to walk the mile of so down to the Weir since this at least makes it feel justified as a treat.
The Cross may not look like it, but one of its functions is to be the best chip shop on the Weir!
