“Beautiful Area”
Reviewed 10 July 2018 for a stay in July 2018

Porlock Weir is a gem - so beautiful and relaxing. Lovely walks especially to the pub. Porlock is a short drive and a lovely place to have a coffee or get basic supplies.
We found - as did other visitors, that the property wasn't cleaned to our required standard. It also needs some general TLC. The view from the garden is breath taking although there is not a private garden attached to this property so you are siting in the owners garden. The Garden chairs where broken and need replacing.

“Good Location”
Reviewed 7 November 2017 for a stay in October 2017

Was concerned at seeing past comments, but the accommodation was fine. Nice views from the upper floor of the sea, good location for walking to Porlock Weir and bridleway close by following flowing stream. The cottage was cosy with a good tv signal and nice shower/bath and comfortable bed. We were grateful to have a few provisions left for arrival too. Maybe a few extra saucepans and a small vegetable knife could be added, but we managed fine.

“So disappointing”

Having used this agent previously we were quite happy to book again with them - oh dear I wish we had read these reviews before we did! As others have said looks nice in the pictures and the location is spot on but...... the house clearly had not been cleaned other than the quick flick of a duster and wet mop. The oven was so filthy and full of grease we simply could not use it. All the crockery was dirty and needed washing before we could use that. The final straw came when we tried to use the washing machine and it tripped all the fuses in the house each time we switched it on. Having contacted the booking agent they thanked us for pointing the issues out and put us in touch with the owner - I wasn't impressed with that. abdication of responsibility IMHO. The owner too thanked me for pointing out the issues and said he must check up on cleaning in the future. No one made any offer to rectify the issues - what happened to customer service. I can also only echo the comments made by others with reference to the garden - not secure for the dog and no chairs if we had wanted to sit out there. A real disappointment as this could be made a real treasure of a spot with a little care - I get the impression that simply getting bookings without any regard to repeat business is all that matters. We came home a day early in the end.

“Depressing”

First impression upon pulling up in car space was, shabby and neglected. Inside was only marginally better. Cleaning not up to standard. All recent previous remarks on this property have not been addressed. The sofa was extremely uncomfortable and spring coming through mattress. Came home early through discomfort. There is a lack of cooking utensils. Outside there are no chairs to sit on. Towels acceptable. The area (Exmoor) is stunning.

“Tired and unloved”

The cottage looked great in the photo's but on arrival looked unloved on the outside and tired on the inside. The windows were so dirty you could not see out of then and am sure they would have brought more light inside if cleaned. I don't think any furniture had been moved for cleaning , with cobwebs everywhere. It was all a bit drab and unloved. On our last day the bath/shower tap did not work so could not use either. The shower was poor too. The garden is not attached to the house but across the drive and not secure so you can not let the dog out into it. Actually it was pretty useless having it, as there were no seats even to sit and have a cup of tea.
On the up side the bed was great and the location was brilliant for us we wanted quiet and somewhere to walk the dog. Porlock Weir is quiet and lovely

“Pleasant enough”

Although it was a pleasant stay, and the weather was fine during the day, there were several niggles that if changed would make this a wonderful little cottage. I hope the owner takes my suggestions with good grace.

It needs decent heating in the bathroom, and a decent shower ( it was like standing under a watering can).
Another heater downstairs because you have to light the wood burner to warm the house.
A decent cleaner should be employed, it looked like superficial dusting had been done.
A new settee, that one is so uncomfortable.
New pots and pans, the current fry pan only took 2 slices of bacon.
A pair of oven gloves.
A ladle and slotted spoon.
A small chopping board.
And if your going the whole hog. A lick of paint (looking a bit tired).

On a positive, the bed was comfy and the bedroom was very nice.

I will tick not recommended to friends currently, but I'll keep my eye on the Chapel Knapp website, and if I can see internal improvements then I would go again.

“Lovely location, comfortable stay”

I've rated this as average because while the location is perfect - quiet but walking distance to pubs and restaurants - and the actual cottage has a lovely set up, when we first arrived and all seemed clean but on closer inspection, it was just a surface clean on the main areas. As long as the cleaning standards have improved (this was brought up with Best of Exmoor while we were there and they were looking into it fully with the owners) then we would definitely recommend and even stay again ourselves. It really is a great base for exploring Exmoor. The little garden area is nice although, as previous people have said, it would be nice to have a proper little table and chair set there - there is a bench but not very practical and could do with a once over! So apart from cleaning and maybe a lick of paint in the bathroom (and more hangers!) would definitely stay here again for a relaxing and quiet time. Would think it is also lovely in the winter with the log burner, nice and cosy!
