“perfect royal lunch”
Reviewed 13 September 2012

we (group of 7) visited the RO and had the perfect family lunch. we started with a round of drinks - we tried the 2 ales on offer and both were delish! we had starters - veggie soup - crab salad and fresh crusty bread. mains were equally as impressive and tasty - we had the lamb - veggie pie and pork dishes. we chose the most delightful bottle of red wine - chateau montesquieu followed by the ginger cake and creme brulee. yummo. Its rare to be able to walk out of a restaurant with a fully satisfied crew!! Our uncle picked up the bill so we didnt see the damage but prices in the menu seemed fair so no complaints there. all the food was presented extremely well and served with a smile. we would definitely go back here again and fully recommend the Royal Oak.

“Royal Oak drops the ball”
Reviewed 12 September 2012

Ho dear what has gone wrong here. We visited 5 months ago and had a wonderfull family meal.
This time the beer was 30deg c, like drinking warm tap water, not a way to treat, "Real Ale".
The service was very limp and not attentive; what happened to our wine order!.
Three mains fine, one returned done to a cinder, poor Sea Bass.
Attention to detail, and a feeling we were on our own was far removed form our previouse visits.
Hope management at the top read these reviews and that the up coming Goodwood weekend visitors are not as dissapointed as we have been.

“birthday treat- PG”
Reviewed 11 September 2012

We had a very relaxing and enjoyable 2 night stay at the Royal Oak- our first visit and a birthday treat from our children. Our daughter had stayed there for work purposes and thought it was our sort of place!!! The staff were welcoming and we enjoyed a good lunch and an excellant dinner.
The close proximity to the Chichester Festival Theatre- 5 mins away was a wonderful bonus.
Really good atmosphere and would happily return.

“Not that impressed”
Reviewed 11 September 2012

My wife and I used the Royal Oak on two occasions in September, once with and once without a reservation.

Frankly, although made welcome we were given the impression that we were a nuisance on both visits. It is obvious that this restaurant has a loyal local clientele and that new faces are not really needed.

Service is good, but I'm afraid that the head waiter needs to remember he's working a 'Gastro-Pub' and not Claridges.

The food was generally excellent, although sadly on the second visit our steaks were served cold and when reheated became so tough and overdone that I could not cut through mine. We were offered free desserts as compensation.

The car park is quite small and is situated across a small road. Driving a large vintage car it proved very difficult to find a slot that would ensure our egress would not become obstructed. In the end we moved the dustbins to allow sufficient space out. (As this was under heavy tree cover we found the local pigeons had echoed the welcome of the management)

Maybe we were unlucky but all in all we were not impressed.

“Great cost stay in cute village”
Reviewed 10 September 2012

Just had a fabulous stay here - beautiful setting in both rain and sun. The pub itself it spacious yet cosy with log fires, papers and magnezines and a cute little garden to sit outside and soak up sun rays (if there are any!). The food was phenomenal and so nice to have different takes on everyday food - the beet root and goats cheese salad and scoliosis were to die for! The service was brilliant too - open and friendly - our every need was attended to without being overbearing or hassling. Our room too was clean and spotless and very comfy. All in all a great stay - we will be back!
