Description: A 200 year old historic inn nestled in the heart of the wonderful Hampshire village of East Lavant, The Royal Oak restaurant, pub and rooms is renowned for its high quality food. Close to Goodwood Park and Chichester, The Royal Oak is very popular with those seeking a real taste of the British countryside in chic surroundings. Attractively appointed in keeping with the original old building but contemporary at the same time, The Royal Oak is comfortable and buzzy with warm service and an upbeat atmosphere. Offering English and modern European classics with a twist, The Royal Oaks menu includes both main meals and light bar snacks, all made using local, seasonal ingredients.

We had heard good things about this restaurant and decided to try it after playing golf at Goodwood. The greeting was excellent, our table was ready but they were happy for us to have a drink at the bar. It happened to be a race day at Goodwood, but although they were busy, the staff always had time for us. All our requests for flexibility on the menu were answered by the polite young lady taking our order. All the staff were polite, friendly and knowledgable. We had a variety of of main courses all of which were declared excellent. The menu is a bit expensive for a country pub/restaurant but the quality matched the prices. We ordered a second bottle of Chablis, our waitress returned with 'Premier Cru' as they did not have any more cold bottles of our first choice - and we could have it for the same price - whopeee! Our only disappointment was that several of us fancied cheese for desert and the desert menu warns you to order cheese at the same time as your main course so it can be taken out of the fridge. We hadn't and didn't fancy fridge cold cheese, so we gave it a miss.
Overall a really good experience and we will be going back.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Delightful room with big bathroom and very comfortable bed., complimentary wi-fi and satelitte tv. We stayed in room 2 in the courtyard with access to a garden which looked on to open fields and views of the downs. On a lovely summer evening we sipped our champagne and listened to the birds and sounds of a combine nearby. Very good beds and a comfy sofa in the room. L'Occitane toiletries. Fridge comes with fresh milk and a good variety of coffee and tea and cakes. Room could do with a full length mirror.

Liked the fridge with 2 bottles of white and red wine to choose from. There are chairs outside the cottage to sit and relax in but the fan from the kitchen is too loud to enjoy. Breakfast superb with delicious croissants and a variety of cooked breakfasts including full english breakfast with locally sourced ingredients. The staff here seem to really enjoy their work and are very helpful.

The Chocolate Sundae is to die for... wish I could get the recipe.

There are lovely walks from this area and this is a beautiful part of West Sussex. We will definitely return.

We've been here a couple of times, once as a couple and once with a couple of friends. I can't fault the atmosphere or the helpfulness and efficiency of the staff. I loved the idea of maltesers served with our drinks after dinner! Price for the food is fairly reasonable (if you don't mind paying a bit extra) and the wine list is good. However, we spent £8.30 for a pint of local ale and a brandy and soda water. I would imagine that some people may have left after a first drink because of the pricey round. They need to be careful they don't price themselves out of the market - The Earl of March, a short walk away, is cheaper and almost as nice.

We've being going to The Royal Oak for high days, holidays and family celebrations - anything from me and my mum to a family party of eleven - for several years now and our experience has been consistently good (leave room for a pud). Service is always efficient, friendly and charming and the food is always delicious. Atmosphere always relaxed and enjoyable whether busy and humming at weekends or quieter on weekday lunchtimes. Slightly more expensive than your average pub meal but absolutely worth it. If you're in Chichester, make the short journey to The Royal Oak (about 4-5 miles?) to enjoy this gem in the heart of the glorious Sussex countryside.

I have just returned from a two night stay at the Royal Oak with my sister, and have to say that we had a really good time. We loved our room (No.5) and all the little extras such as a Roberts wireless tuned to Radio 4 in the bathroom, Occitane toiletries, chocolate and bottled water in the minibar included in the room rate. It seemed they had thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable. The staff were delightful, the breakfasts amazing with lots of fresh fruits and a good choice of cooked items, and dinner on both nights was excellent and seemed reasonably priced. I can't wait to return - it's a real 'find.'
