Lovely pub, if a bit food dominated (really only dining tables in the pub). Having said that, the food was excellent.

Stayed in one of the cottages which could only be faulted for a fairly poor shower so had to have baths. Nespresso machine, fresh milk, great lounge area, books, games, decent TV, free wifi. great set up.

very good food menu, again hard to fault the plates, only slightly let down by some of the service. Specials menu was good - delivering what the chef had got hold of that day.

Breakfast was excellent as well, relaxed, but very good ingredients. Great walks on the doorstep.

Whole experience very good.

Room Tip: if you can get one, try and stay in the cottages at the back - wish had been able to stay longer.

Good.
1. Charming Inn, village and area. Close to Chichester, the sea and Goodwood.
2. Excellent dinner and equally good cooked breakfast.
3.Was warned where NOT to park my car, where the pigeons might use it for target practice. Nice touch!
4. Room no.1 was clean, cosy with a nice view, at eye level, of a corn field. Big, comfortable bed with nice "freebies" in the bathroom.
5. Overall: quintissential English Inn.

Bad.
1. Room 5 (where our children slept). They were woken at 05.00, both mornings, by nesting pigeons in the roof, and also subjected to bright lights outside the window.
2. The reason why dogs are not allowed: that they might effect the stay of future guests who are allergic to our canine friends. If the owners (who presumably don't own a dog), do not wish to have dogs in the rooms, just say so. No shame in that. Don't blame the virtually non-existant allergies of future customers. Wherever we go with our dog, and where she is welcome, I have never heard a landlord complain that he would have more customers if he banned dogs from the rooms.
3. Please don't add service to your dinner bill. Generally it is NOT the custom (in my experience) to do so in pub/Inn restaurants and/or family run hotels in the UK. And normally, I am more generous, in such cases, then the usual 12.50%. You don't have to do it, and you are in a minority.
4. I love the Beatles.........but please, not at breakfast, on a Sunday morning, at Volume 8.
5. At breakfast, on the Sunday, there was no newspaper and no bread.............. because they hadn't been delivered and the waitresses responsible for this cataclismic news were at a loss as to how to recify the position. My wife and I then suggetsed something outrageous, unique and extraordinary.........that perhaps someone could drive the two miles to one of Sussex's largest towns to pick up said goods. Looks of consternation! Anyhow chef caught on, performed the necessary rescue act, and soon we all had something upon which to put our marmalade, and something to read.
6. Thin walls next to Room 1. Could hear next door's muffled conversation.

The "Bad" apart, it is still a lovely place to stay, charming, quirky (for not necessarily the right reasons), and a lovely break from London life. May go back, but suspect there are other places of similar standing locally to explore first. Nevertheless a lovely weekend. Thank you, Royal Oak.

Room Tip: NOT room 5.

This place is outstanding. We booked two rooms and both were lovely, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The food in the restaurant was lovely and so was the beer.
All the staff were friendly and the owners lovely - nothing too much trouble. We were given towels for the beach and even a plug convertor to re-charge all the gadgets. In fact it was so good we stayed an extra night.
A really pleasant restful stay.
We would love to come back and stay in one of the little cottages next time we visit the UK.

The Royal Oak is absolutely lovely - charming inn, wisteria over the door, it's all low ceilings and bags of character, a great wine bar/restaurant vibe with terraced outdoor seating, including a magical garden area at the back of the property overlooking acres of wheatfields. We stayed in room 5, cosy room with kingsized bed and large ensuite bathroom overlooking the front of the building and it was quiet and very comfortable. Food is good quality pub/bistro with local ingredients and seasonal, plus a great breakfast menu. As other reviewers have noted, the staff are welcoming and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We'll definitely be back!

This is a very charming pub ,restaurant with superb cottage accomadation overlooking the fields and local stables, and lovely rooms in the main house. The staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is very " country " and the food is excerlant . A good place to stop when attending the horse races or the motor racing circuit and totally charming.

Room Tip: If you can book a cottage you will be in heaven, but not good for elderly people as the stairs are s...

I don't make a habit of writing reviews on trip advisor but feel compelled to after our stay there this weekend. From the very start the staff were friendly, professional and delivered impeccable service. They handled our unscheduled late arrival and dinner booking wonderfully. There were no gripes or push back. Just charm and reassurance not to let it bother us at all. The dinner on both evenings were fantastic. Great quality. The room was peaceful and beautifully decorated. Only two tiny comments. Potentially switch off the heated towel rail at this time of year as it warms the room... and the thoroughly obnoxious and ill mannered group at dinner last night; which I hasten to add was not the staff's fault and they handled admirably. Thank you for a wonderful experience. We will be returning. Helen and William
