This was a birthday treat for my husband to go for a special dinner and spa break. The hotel was full of character and we were welcomed and looked after well by all the staff. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented - the evening dining experience was excellent with a good balance between being both relaxed but at the same time extremely professional.
Only disappointment was the description of it as being 'set in nine acres of peaceful gardens and parkland'. We had planed to go for a walk around the parkland but there really is only a small garden which is pretty but you need to ask for local walks as most of the land is inaccessible/ overgrown. The views are fantastic though and we walked around the pretty village in the end.
The spa was very well set up with great facilities - really luxurious and we felt very relaxed by the end of the day. The massage was very good and there was a lovely rain shower feature as well as good steam and sauna room. It was a sunny day so the inside/outside pool and outdoor hot tub were excellent options. Definitely recommend this whole experience - not cheap but worth every penny!

Room Tip: Might be worth asking for a room that has the views over countryside and maybe avoiding the rooms on...

I wanted somewhere for a surprise birthday present for my husband. We are in our 30s. I wanted a Michelin star restaurant, spa and an amazing old hotel. I got exactly what I had wanted.

The staff were amazing including restaurant spa and reception.. They were there to please. You just had to ask. The meal was out of this world. The service was second to none. Everyone knew their stuff.

The spa was so relaxing. The water was warm and spotless and there was hot and cold drinks at your disposal. Complementary robes and flip flops too.

We had a paper delivered to our door. Tea coffee and sugar in our room. Basically you could see that if there was anything you waned you didn't have, or anything you wanted changing that you didn't like, you'd just have to ask and it would be done.

We were treated like royalty. We are not rich so this really was a treat and thanks to Ockenden Manor and its staff and facilities, we were not disappointed.

Thanks guys you made this more perfect that I had ever imagined!!!!!

We had two rooms - one in the Manor & one in the spa building. Each a completely different experience to the other. If you're after the stately old world experience choose a room in the Manor. If you want ultra modern comfort go for a spa room. There was a wedding on the weekend we were there so we couldn't dine in the main dining room which was a pity. It would have been nice or have been told that at the time of booking. The second dining room is a bit dark & overwhelming. The food was very good but I'm not sure about a Michelin star. We went on two lovely walks through the fields & thoroughly enjoyed a weekend in the country.

We stayed overnight, midweek, for a spa break. Package includes overnight accomodation (DBB) as well as an amount towards spa treatments.

Hotel
I cannot fault the hotel, from the moment we walked in the service was faultless. Another reviewer stated that the service wasn't formal 5* however that is the beauty of the place - service is 5* without being overly stuffy. It really felt as if staying in someone's home. There were a number of nice touches; being shown to our room personally, staff recognising and acknowledging you, staff remembering you and automatically charging to your room. I've stayed at some nice hotels in the past but can honestly say that this is one of if not the best. Room was a good size (we just had a standard) and very nicely furnished. The only downside was that our room was in the extension to the main building, overlooking the road down to the spa. The noise of the external compressors (I assume for a/c in the kitchens) kicking in and out was slightly disruptive and we had an early morning wake up with cars driving down to the spa and the rubbish bins being emptied.

Restaurant
Again service was some of the best I've had. Food was excellent, nice touches included being able to sit in the garden with a drink whilst looking at the menu and coffee being served in the lounge. We had the tasting menu and there were no problems with making a change to one of the courses. We had lunch there the following day and the food/service was just as good. Breakfast was a little of a let down after what we'd had the evening before, I assume different staff work this shift. Service was as good as ever but the food was just ok, not enough to feel the need to complain but it did stick out given the lunch and dinner - poached eggs were quite a bit overcooked.

Spa
As part of our package we had an allowance against spa treatments, although note that the spa isn't the cheapest and this doesn't go far. The building itself is very nice, very modern looking compared to the original house but strangely it seems to fit in very well. Everything was clean and well looked after with plenty of towels and as much water, coffee (nespresso) and tea as you could drink. Pool was heated to a nice temparature. Spa treatments were very good and the staff very attentive. However what lets the spa down is the staff working the reception area, it really felt very confused and lacking any management. On arrival the receptionist didn't seem to know what we were booked in for although she had the booking in front of her. We were told to take a seat and to fill in some forms but it took a while for her to come over and collect them and she didn't explain anything about the spa or the facilities except offering to show us where the changing rooms were. From looking around it appears that quite a lot of business is repeat or members - it would be nice if the reception staff recognised that not everyone has been before and took a bit more time to explain things. Our package included lunch but this wasn't mentioned and we had to ask the receptionist who then took us back to the waiting area and gave us a menu - no explanation as to what we could have. Given the service in the rest of the hotel/restaurant (as well as from the staff giving treatments) it is a shame that service at the spa reception is so bitty and unorganised, it really felt that they needed a manager overseeing things.

Overall Ockenden was excellent and I would certainly visit again. None of the issues were enough to spoil our stay. This is a small hotel and they have got the balance between high levels of service coupled with keeping the small/intimate feel absolutely right.

I live relatively near to Ockenden Manor and have always loved staying there with my husband or eating in the restaurant for a special occasion. Service has always been excellent in the main hotel and food quality brilliant.
On this occasion the restaurant also lived up to all our expectations, food wonderful and service very attentive but not obtrusive.

This time was my first experience of the spa. I was there with 7 friends, for one of them's hen weekend. We stayed in 3 adjoining rooms in the spa block. The rooms are beautifully designed, very modern and well equipped (even a Nespresso coffee machine in the room!) and spacious enough for 3 in a room. We loved having a big shared balcony outside. The spa is absolutely lovely with amazing facilities and we were particularly fortunate to have good weather. The place is well designed inside and out. Coffee /tea are available to help yourself to all day.

On arrival we were told our rooms were ready but had the embarrassing experience of being taken to our rooms only to find they were still occupied! (We were there before 2pm however and indeed were not expecting them to be ready until they said they were unexpectedly). Unfortunately there continued to be a few mix ups during our stay such as no record of at least one of the treatments booked and time changes. Towels were not ready in lockers as we were told they would be. The food we ordered by the pool took much longer than expected dispite giving staff lots of notice that one of us had a treatment in 1 1/2 hours time. Generally service in the spa area seemed disorganised and inattentive. There seemed to be a lack of clear management direction and allocated roles. Maybe there has been change of management?
During our stay It was rather busy (Friday- Saturday) and we wanted to have sun beds next to each other. One particular spa attendant was very helpful and did make sure we had everything we needed.
Our treatments were mostly of very good standard.
Overall we would go back as we had a great time and there were more positives than negatives. However we felt that service in the spa needed to be addressed.

Room Tip: The rooms in the spa are amazing!

I would totally recommend this hotel - whether you are looking to stay, just go for dinner, or to use their lovely spa. I had a wonderful stay, a lovely massage and the most delicious dinner followed by an incredible cheese board. Yum. I will be back.

We went on the Sunday evening deal with 3 course dinner, breakfast and use of the spa from check in until 4pm on the day of check-out. Easy to reach from our house in SE London, just down past Gatwick airport. Nice village location with a local pub and some interesting independent shops.

Amazing 3 course dinner in the restaurant, really exceptional food. Some of the best food I've eaten in any hotel world wide. Our table positioning felt slightly crammed into one corner though and within 12-18 inches of the table behind me. The room was large enough and should have been set up differently, particularly on this quiet Sunday evening.

The room we stayed in (Timothy) was a bit noisy as we could hear the conversation going on in the next door room easily through the wall. Thankfully we had quiet neighbours and a relatively good night's sleep. Again in the morning conversations from both the reception desk and the adjacent linen cupboard / office area could be clearly heard from 7.30am.

The bathroom had a small and rather impractical bath installed which did not get used. A walk in shower would be much better suited here and more impressive to the guest.

More could be made of the grounds of the hotel with some additional tables / chairs for the lawns. The terrace was very pleasant though. We enjoyed the quirky bar area.

The spa was fantastic & we couldn't fault it. Very impressive. Great food in there also and the facilities were some of the best I've seen.
