“Good Food”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Location ideal, good sized car park. The place was full on our arrival, and although we had not booked, we were accommodated. The staff were very friendly, attentive and professional. The menu gave you a wide selection of dishes. Our meals were hot, well presented and of food quality. There was a good choice of local ales, and atmosphere was typical of a country pub. Worth a visit.

“A Special Celebration”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Had a wonderful celebration lunch at this delightful establishment and very much enjoyed the good food and great atmosphere. Was certainly worth the drive through beautiful English countryside.

“Excellent food and Service”
Reviewed 25 May 2014 via mobile

This was our first visit and we were very impressed with both the food and service. We met friends for lunch who had been before and who thought it was well worth another visit. We couldn't agree more, great food and attentive service from the staff. Having read some previous reviews before our visit we can only assume that management and staff have really upped their game. Well done! we will be back.

“A little disappointing.....”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

I found this a very difficult review to write because the contrast between the food and the 'experience' of visiting were so marked .Staying in the area for a week we had read the reviews and had high expectations only to come away a little disappointed.

On a positive note the food was excellent - good quality, well prepared, beautifully presented. Portion sizes were good and reasonably priced. The menu had something for everyone from an omelette to more specialist fish and meat dishes. A great selection of wines (incl. many by the glass) and beers.

There were however a number of little issues, which on their own did not amount to much (we don't expect perfection!) but cumulatively did not help for a positive experience. We were served very warm water and one of our knives had not been cleaned properly. Service was efficient but slightly automated and remote.Perhaps patronising is a little too strong a description however we both felt we were intruding where the staff were far happier dealing with the regulars.

Finally, having both had starters and mains we declined anything else - not because we wouldn't have enjoyed the food but because we wanted to get away from the cigarette smoke drifting into the restaurant from the terrace a few feet away.

If rated on the food - five star; however for the overall experience - three star.

Thank you for your very genuine and honest feedback. Service is at the very heart of what we do and we are absolutely passionate about this. This is obviously a failing of us the management to allow you to feel so underserved and we are going to have to look very seriously at why you and the previous reviewer had such a bad experience. I can assure you that we will be doing this. I am glad you enjoyed the food so much but this can never, as you rightly say, make up for poor service.

“Staff are the difference”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

Good food, reasonable prices, but the disconnected service let the place down.

The staff all seem to have something else to be getting on with, checking up on the diners' needs almost as an afterthought when they have a moment. There were plenty of them, but there was little sense that they were being led, managed or working to a plan.

There wasn't a single significant reason to make a complaint, but a succession of minor issues (indifferent welcome, inattentive and inexperienced bar service, 3 different waiting staff, long wait after main course for dessert menus, desserts served onto a dirty table, forgotten spoons, etc) all combined to create a background air of confused desperation that was a bit of a distraction from what was otherwise a pleasant meal.

A simple checklist for the staff would improve things immeasurably:
- if it is a reservation, then see people to their table when they arrive rather than describe roughly where the table is
- as you show them the table, make it clear whether you will take drinks orders or whether they should go to the bar themselves
- clarify whether you take food orders, or whether food should be ordered at the bar
- try to have the same staff member serving a specific table, so they have a feel for how long people have been waiting rather than looking around to see who needs service (usually a bit late)
- wipe tables clean between courses
- offer dessert menus as you tidy, not some time later

I'd far rather have someone ask me three times whether I need anything else and wave them away with a smile than have to spend my time craning my neck around to see if anyone has noticed I'm waiting. Comments overheard from other diners around us showed our experience was not unique.

Finally, unless your waiting team are exemplary then choosing to play Faulty Towers episodes through the speakers in the toilets is painfully, not amusingly, ironic.

Firstly my apologies for what sounds like a very poor experience. I can assure you that we have already been investigating, in detail, why things went so wrong when you visited. I think we know the particular service you refer to. Thank you for your checklist - though these steps are already very much enshrined in what is called in the restaurant trade 'our order of service' – which is how staff should treat customers from when they enter building (or even before) to when they leave. This was just clearly not delivered to you (or anything vaguely close) and clearly the tables around you. I think your ‘staff are the difference’ title is very apt – but I would also add in ourselves as management, as it is our failing to deliver the ‘order of service’ through the staff on this occasion that is really at fault.
