Called in on a Friday evening, just before rush hour, no reservation, Jim Clark rally all over town, expecting to be turned away - very warm welcome, engaging staff, good food and service, good choice of beers, highly recommended.

On Tuesday we booked a table for two for Saturday at 1.00 pm (ok, probably not the best reservation for the proprietor ) and arrived a few minutes early. We were shown/directed by a girl from behind the bar to a very small table set for two in a not very pleasant position. There were three larger (unoccupied) tables in a better position, each set for four. One had a reserved sign, two did not. I noticed that there were other tables which had been set for four and had only two diners at them.We asked if we could have one of the unreserved tables. We were told we could not have one of those in case anyone else wanted them. We offered to eat in the bar as there were empty tables there. She refused to allow this. We left and had a most enjoyable meal elsewhere in Kelso at e.a.t (briget of Edinburgh) On our way back to the car I popped in to the Cobbles and those two tables were still free! The food at the Cobbles might have been good but this bossy waitress with poor people skills put us off. We won't be returning to the Cobbles and won't be recommending it to our friends.

Dear Peter
I am very sorry to hear that you experienced poor service in our restaurant. We are here to give great customer service to everyone, at all times. I am disappointed that you felt let down by the staff.
I have checked the diary to see which table your booking was allocated to; it was actually one of our preferred table for twos. I am sorry if it was not acceptable to you. We have small restaurant with limited tables therefore we do encourage the staff to save the larger tables for larger groups. I think most people understand that if we give away all of our fours to twos then we will not have any tables to give to fours when they arrive.
On Saturday 28th June, we served 53 lunches. We can accommodate 35 persons at maximum capacity . I have spoken to the staff working who have confirmed that every table in the restaurant was used at least once, some tables were even used twice. In the time that you dined elsewhere these larger tables that you mention were indeed used by other diners.
Nevertheless, you have identified an area where staff training is needed which I will personally undertake.
I would hope that you would change your mind about dine with us in the future to allow us the opportunity to redeem ourselves.

Kind regards
Annika Meiklejohn

Visited here on an overnight stay in Kelso for a birthday dinner. Service was friendly and attentive, food was delicious, and beers were tasty and local. Nice, relaxed dining experience.

A very good dinner menu supplemented by a superb steak menu with a variety of cuts all from a local supplier.
