“Fantastic smoked salmon!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2012

We stayed at The Orangerie, which is a great little cottage that the owners own, not far from here.

We visited the Smokehouse for lunch/dinner one day and had the smoked haggis, which was really tasty.

It was a shame it was raining, or we would have sat outside in the little seating area and enjoyed the views, but inside was just as good.

The deli area had a good selection of all the products that Vincent smokes, including brie, stilton, chicken, duck, trout, hot & cold smoked salmon, and plenty more besides!

We passed by on our way home and stocked up on a number of things - the smoked salmon is delicious and we bought a very large pack of this - needless to say, we'll never buy the supermarket stuff again!

THANK YOU J and A!!!!! Now - For the benefit of Marrbury readers - this lovely couple stayed in our luxury couples retreat" "The Orangerie. The photo this lovely lady placed here, is the breakfast she herself cooked whilst staying in the Orangerie. It was however, the inspiration for us to add a very special smoked salmon scramble to our breakfast menu. Served up until 12.30pm daily, we are now offering Smoked Salmon Scramble made with local duck eggs, thick double cream, dill and pepper. Thanks again J&A - hope to see you both again soon!

“Stick to the fish”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2012

We visited for afternoon tea and cakes, and to buy some of their excellent fish.

The fish we took away was excellent but the cakes/scones were expensive and not great. Victoria sponge was sickly sweet, very very over sugared. Scones not wonderful. Limited choice as many things had run out.

Not as good as the smoked salmon and expensive for what it was.

Really need to up their game on the non fish items.

Many thanks for your comments. It is indeed difficult for us to offer the very best in desserts being that we do have to buy in hand made cakes and treats. Unlike many establishments, we are up front and honest in that fact - BUT in saying all that - your comment DID make us think about what we offer on our desserts and treats board. Over the past few weeks, we have introduced some new lines, and have just completed a customer survey on our cakes and treats. Thank you for constructive criticism - glad you enjoyed your fish! Perhaps next time you might want to stop for a brunch, lunch or supper and enjoy the full range of our delicious menu. Hope to see you again!

“Believing your own hype is a dangerous thing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2012

We passed this cafe/smokehouse on our way to Portpatrick and thought it would be an ideal stop off on our way home for coffee and cake. The coffee was of the filter variety which I thought had disappeared long ago with scampi in the basket and Black Forest gateau. Not great quality either and at 1.95 a pop with cold milk, a bit of a rip off. I was asked if I'd like anything else but all I could see we're some obviously bought in scones in a sealed plastic bag which looked unappetising. I realise that this place is primarily a smokehouse but it does advertise itself as a cafe as well therefore the lack of good quality cakes on display was a great disappointment.
I also expected maybe a tour of the smokehouse but that was not on offer either.

Thank you for visiting our Smokehouse Deli and Cafe at Carsluith Castle.
As much as we would love to have a cappucino machine, our very small kitchen does not unfortunately allow us enough space.
Instead, we offer the finest Brodies Mature Java Coffee which we believe is the best filter coffee in the market.
We charge £1.90 - for unlimited cups of coffee when dining. MANY of our customers love this free top up service and we are often complimented for doing so.
We offer a wide range of hand baked cakes, scones and crumpets each day. Our scones are indeed hand baked for us, by a local hand bake cake company. Again, as space is limited we have to focus on the foods we do best that being of course, our incredible range of smoked foods.
Such a pity you did not choose to sample some of our delicious smoked foods. Our smokehouse is no longer open to the public and is some 25 miles from the Castle location. We do have however, a virtual tour which is available to anyone who wishes to view it. Many guests dining in our cafe, do indeed enjoy our tableside dvd persentation.
I am surprised one would find £1.90 (including 20& vat) expensive now for unlimited coffee. Guests dining, are given their tea or coffee whilst awaiting their food, and topped up as many times as they wish during their visit. Most regard this as a great service, and do not find themselves having to fork out again and again for added cups of coffee.
Aside from all of this, we offer a free sampling every day, although we cannot tour you through the smokeouse, our staff are delighted to assist in discussing, and offering tastings of, our very fine smoked foods.
Thank you once again.

“Not just fish and chips..... Marrbury Fish and Chips.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2012

Given the unusual and varied menu, when my wife and a friend ordered fish and chips I thought, 'How boring', but nervertheless I went along with them. Wow, what a surprise, Marrbury fish and chips must be the finest fish and chips ever. Moist crumbly salmon cooked in a light crispy batter and chunky home made chips, golden on the outside and soft on the inside. Absolutely delicious. What's more, every time our cups ran low the waitress offered a free top up of tea or coffee. I brought home some of their smoked chicken which I have just eaten for lunch -very tasty; which is what reminded me to write this review. If you are heading along the A75 it is definitely the place worth visiting.

“A Scottish Smoke House at it's very best”

Have been here several times - rarely disappointed. Their smoked salmon is some of the best you will taste. If you are in the region seek it out, in my opinion you will not be disappointed.
