“Lovely room and peace & quiet”
Reviewed 12 May 2013

Three of us stayed for a few days. The superior double was a lovely room with comfortable bed; good bathroom. The single room had a very narrow bed for an adult - an upgrade to something wider is needed - but otherwise the room was comfortable. The food was variable rather as if the chef couldn't be bothered at times or else his days off resulted in a lower standard. Whatever the reason, it needs to be addressed to provide the same standard all the time, as when it was good, it was very good. As always, breakfasts varied depending on the cook! Never sure why this happens in nearly every hotel, other than the absolutely top class ones. The staff are lovely and always helpful, the waitresses being particularly attentive and friendly. Hotel in lovely situation with well tended grounds. Well worth a visit.

Why can all hotels provide service and relaxed comfort as at Kirroughtree? The room was spacious, warm and comfortable and as a wheelchair user my husband found the room and bathroom was perfectly set up for his needs. The little touches awaiting us in the room - fruit, sherry as well as the more usual tea and coffee - together with the warm welcome at reception made us feel that we were important guests. The food was as ever, excellent and served at a table with spotless linen and gleaming silverware. Friendly staff who showed a real interest in their guests made our short stay memorable.

Room Tip: We have only ever used the room which has been sensitively adapted for disabled wheelchair users and...

The first impression is of a rather dilapidated old building in need of repairs.

On arrival, a gentleman hurried us to our room and departed swiftly.

"Tea and coffee, await your arrival," says the brochure.

Well, there was an old plastic kettle, and when we turned on the 'cold' tap, to fill the kettle, out came hot water.

There were cobwebs above the curtains and stains on the carpet.

The inside of the bath was none too clean.

The dining room is somewhat gloomy.

Our first course at dinner was a teaspoonful of salmon and some mashed potatoes.

This was followed by some slightly tough poultry.

I got the impression that morale among some of the staff was not too high.

The main lounge is rather like a dark museum.

There appeared to be only 4 other people staying at the hotel while we were there, and they were all well over retirement age.

I am reminded of a 'five star' hotel in Malaysia which has seen better days.

It charged £25 for the room and half board.

Kirroughtree House is owned by a company which would appear to be short of money for refurbishment and which would appear to have laid off some staff.

I would suggest that the company should build a giant adventure playground at Kirroughtree, similar to the ones at Drumlanrig Castle or Cream of Galloway, to attract in happy families.

Perhaps some musical entertainment could be provided in one of the lounges.

The town of Newton Stewart is as dilapidated at the outside of Kirroughtree House.

Many buildings have cracked walls.

There is no longer a Town Council.

There is no railway station.

The museum is permanently closed.

The community centre is boarded up.

The tourist centre was closed when we visited.

The staff at the cinema were not very welcoming.

We were not allowed to use the toilet at the former Town Council building.

When we took a bus we found the bus driver to be excessively grumpy.

If this was Switzerland there would be a powerful mayor who would shake things up and the place would be buzzing.

We stayed here over Easter 2013 for two nights. The Hotel is situated in rolling countryside with stunning walks and mountain biking tracks on the door step. Reached by a long impressive drive, offering glimpses of the hotel through the trees, the hotel has ample car parking and is set in extensive grounds. After parking the car, we were greeted at the door with a smile by a polite young receptionist, who offered to take our bags. As our bags were heavy (my wife doesn’t travel light!) I declined her offer, but she didn’t take no for an answer and she quickly summoned another member of staff to help. Our room was grandly named the “Regency Suite” and lived up to its grand title. The room consisted of a wood panelled sitting room, large bedroom and unusual octagonal bathroom. All the rooms were furnished in period style to suit, and spotlessly clean! Fresh fruit and sherry had been thoughtfully provided and overall it was a bit like staying in a National Trust house or the set of Downton Abbey!
The public areas of the hotel also have the feel of a grand country house, with log fires, more wood panelling and pictures of stags and lochs adorning the walls. Both dining rooms were tastefully decorated and the tables were well spaced and immaculately laid. The Dinner menu offered traditional Scottish fare and featured locally sourced ingredients. The food was well presented and delicious and the service was attentive without being too obtrusive. Breakfast was equally as good and as part of the package, we were offered Sunday lunch into the bargain! The whole stay was extremely good value for money.
Overall we had a very pleasant and relaxing stay at Kirroughtree House and we’ll definitely be back. Kirroughtree has many charms, but the overriding impression we took away from our stay was the politeness, dedication and professionalism of the hotel staff. Service was always with a smile and everyone was cheerful and willing to chat, The staff working at Kirroughtree seemed determined, at all times, to provide the best customer experience possible. The Management of McMillen Hotels must be very proud of their workforce, they are this hotels greatest assets.

Room Tip: Ask for the Regency Suite and live like a Lord!

Just back from a two night golf break at this hotel. We were amazed at the quality of service we received. Every member of staff we met was happy, cheerful and helpful. They were prepared to spend time with you and nothing was too much trouble. They all seemed to know we were there to play golf and all asked with genuine interest how it was going. Golf tee times and trollies we're booked efficiently and all went smoothly. We were in a huge room (we could have organised a dance in it) which was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The Hotel was really quiet at night and great for a relaxing break. The food was fantastic and a completely different menu on both nights of locally sourced food cooked to perfection was served with style. There is absolutely nothing bad we can say about the Kirroughtree and we can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: We had room 2. It was the size of a small dance hall with four windows overlooking the grounds.

Stayed for 2 nights on DBB basis. Have stayed here twice before and was keen to return. Rooms, food and service are all excellent. Could not find a fault.
From the personal greeting at the door and help with luggage from the car to the final check-out, our stay was high standard all the way.

Room Tip: Some rooms are on lower ground floor and therefore don't have views but all rooms are excellent.

Always a treat to stay here. Large comfortable rooms, very helpful and friendly staff who even greet you by name and can't do enough to help, a relaxing lounge with open fire in the winter and wonderful, wonderful meals. My only complaint.......it's too far away from home to visit more often.

Room Tip: It's worth paying the extra for a superior room.
