“Very good food and service”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

My wife and I ate here on a recent stay in Newton Stewart. As it was so warm outside, we sat in the beer garden which, whilst OK, they could make a lot more attractive as it's really just a few tables at the bottom end of the car park whereas it would be much more attractive if it was separated somehow. However, the food was very good and the waitress didn't seem at all put out by having to make quite a walk to the several groups who were eating outside on a very warm evening and was very pleasant and helpful.

My Husband and I have just spent a wonderful weekend in this part of the country. The Hotel itself was impressive. The Staff were both friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The rates are reasonable and the food is top notch. The only downside is the kitchen closes at 8:30pm. The food is locally sourced and from excellent suppliers. Would we stay again. Yes Top Marks all round. Comfy beds and very clean. All you could want for a break away, be it for one night or more. A warm welcome awaits you.

We booked a family room for 3 nights for £255 B&B this was excellent value for 4 of us and ideal with two adjoining rooms, a large double with sofa for sitting and relaxing and a twin with shared bathroom, tvs in both - cheaper than a holiday cottage and no washing up!. The staff were lovely, very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about the local area.

If you are used to soulless modern facilities this is not a modern hotel-chain type establishment which has it's pluses and minuses! The breakfast is full english - or rather scottish as it included haggis ( but there is no continental option and the coffee is instant) there is also an option to take a packed lunch instead - great if you want an early start. The staff are locals with a wealth of local knowledge and the other guests friendly - this is the kind of hotel where a single person could eat in the bar/restaurant and not feel odd. However the hotel is looking rather dated in decor, if I was to get picky - the mattresses at the cheap end and the grout round the bath peeling, but at these room prices this was acceptable!

We ate in one night the food was good but quite expensive I thought for a family bar meal (mains £11-13 ish, puds £5) and the restaurant while fine for breakfasts and grabbing a quick meal early evening has the atmosphere if a tea rooms/cafe than hotel restaurant (no table cloths for example). The beer garden looked nice out the back of the hotel but is not easily accessed from the bar.

There are plenty of places to eat in the town - there are two takaways,(at least) plus many restaurants including a cantonese/chinese, an indian/pizza and a very nice small italian
down my the bridge over the river where we ate one night - this was take your own wine which is helpful with costs. Here the food was lovely and so was the atmosphere, and the prices very reasoanable (meal for 4 with 2 of us having puds and soft drinks just over £50). There is also a Sainsburys and Aldi and a Co-Op for lunch time picnics.
There is plenty to do near Newton Stewart - we went mountain biking Kiroktree and Glentool - the former was expecially good but the latter the route we wnated to do was half closed. There are lovely coastal beaches with rocky shores/pools, sand and shells depending on where you go. There are historic castles and a trip to the mull of galloway to see the sea birds. We saw Ospreys at Threve castle on the way home. Although a long drive out to Newton Stewart - it was worth it fro the relaxed atmosphere, the friendly welcome for tourists, the outdoor activities and the lack of crowds.

We arrived late at the Bruce Hotel after coming from Northern Ireland on the ferry from Larne to Cairnryan. We had never been in this hotel before but thought it was absolutely superb. The room was well appointed and spacious and the staff were courteous and helpful. We had an excellent breakfast and left for our journey home to Yorkshire feeling very happy that we had spent a night in Newton Stewart.

I spent 3 nights here as part of a group of friends on a weekend away. The management and staff were all excellent, and couldn't do enough for us - it's a genuinely friendly and welcoming hotel. The bar is popular with local people and there can be a bit of noise at night from other guests, particularly in the rooms at the back. Mine was at the front and I had no issues with noisy guests; although there was some road noise and I did hear the pub up the road chucking out late on the Friday night. The breakfast was included in the room rate; portions were generous and cooked breakfast ingredients were of a good quality. We ate in one night - my dishes were a little disappointing and ordinary to be honest, although my friends enjoyed theirs, especially the lamb. Maybe I was unlucky with my choices. The rooms were clean and comfortable - a notch above basic, with a generous hospitality tray and complimentary toiletries, and the bedlinen was crisp and heavyweight - lovely! Other reviewers mention the beds being hard - it's true that mine was quite firm, but I like that, and I had three excellent nights' sleep in it. The decor was a bit tired but everywhere was clean and tidy. For the price, I thought the Bruce offered excellent value, and I would certainly use it again, and I absolutely cannot fault the staff, who were wonderful.

Room Tip: Wifi is intermittent in the front rooms on the second floor, but there is no noise from the bar ther...

Our room overlooked the builders yard at the back, it was quiet but needs refurbishing, the bed was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on. Staff pleasant and breakfast was fine. Newton Stewart as a place is not great , I recommend anyone wanting to explore the Galloway forest should base themselves elsewhere like Kirkcudbright.
