After ordering we had to move tables as all we could smell were the loo s at that point we should of left because we waited 1 hour for the food to arrive and it was beyond awful! We had to send two panini s back and asked for them to be removed from the bill they were soggy and the chicken seemed had been cooked from frozen! Our little girls fish was full of water and bones! All the food had been cooked what appeared to be from frozen packets and appeared cheap! Avoid at all costs!!!!

We were looking for somewhere to have a quick evening meal on passing through Castle Douglas. I chose the Douglas Arms because it had a few good reviews on Tripadvisor and also its location is perfect - right on the main drive through. The hotel is quite dark and old looking if you enter through the main hotel part but we discovered later that the restaurant has its own door straight out onto the side street. The restaurant was very large, and very bright with big windows round it. The tables and chairs were modern and very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and professional, and couldn't do enough to help. The menu has a very varied selection of starters and mains. We didn't have a starter but had the burger each and it was fantastic. Served with home made chips, which we haven't seen anywhere in years. The plateful was so big we didn't have room for a desert so I didn't see the desert menu to be able to comment. The prices were very good - 2 main courses and 2 drinks were £21. They do a 2 course lunch menu for I think £6.95 which would be great value if you were looking for a quick bite. The restaurant was busy too - quiet when we arrived but very quickly filled up with prior bookings. I would highly recommend, and would go back in a minute.

This hotel is elegant and "oldie worldie". Even if you don't want to stay, it is lovely to sit down for a coffee or pint of real ale in comfy armchairs and relax, away from the hurly-burly.

Went with voucher deal. After reading some of the other poor reviews, the hotel is obviously now in the hands of new owners. We were shown to our room by a very friendly lady at reception who helped to carry our bags upstairs. The room was pleasant enough, but no way near that shown on the website. TV was ancient, bulky with about 14" screen, which had a constant buzzing. Room, at the front, very noisy with lorries and with young drivers speeding up and down with radios blaring. Thankfully no noise from about 11pm to 7am. Bed was rather lumpy for a 3* hotel. Small complimentary box with 2 chocolates on the bed. Bottles of water in addition to the welcome tray. Bathroom large and clean but fan not working - could have been unpleasant! Shower pressure was very powerful - good plus point. Towels, linen and room was clean and tidy. Meal on the first evening was excellent. DA Tower is an unusual starter - a tower of haggis and black pudding on a bed of veg - extremely tasty! Mushrooms with pepper sauce also lovely. Mains of scampi and the steak and ale pie were also first class. My helping of pie was so much that I couldn't finish it! Next night for starters we had potato wedges with cheese and bacon - excellent. The lasagne was also very good although a shade dry. We were served on both evenings by a young waitress who was very friendly, attentive and highly competent. Dishes cleared immediately on finishing. Breakfast on both days was as good as it comes. Apart from the variety of juices, cereals and yogurts, the cooked breakfast was made to order from egg, bacon, black pudding, haggis, beans, sausage, mushrooms, potato scone and tomato. This was followed by toast and marmalade! I made the mistake of taking it all but obviously I cut this down on the second morning! The cooked breakfast was brought out piping hot within a very short time of finishing the grapefruit segments etc. Plates cleared by waitress immediately. All in all, a very pleasant stay- could not be faulted for friendliness or attentiveness. Would definitely (notice the correct spelling!) recommend as part of a voucher deal. New owners have worked wonders and deserve success. However, I can't score as being overall excellent due to the TV and bed in Room 16.

What can I say? Room reasonable, esp considering new owners refurbishing hotel. Food excellent, was on a two night deal and ate in the hotel both nights. Currently booking again. Would definately recommend this hotel.
