Description: Situated beside the main A75, just outside the village of Ringford and some 3 miles inland from the artists town of Kirkcudbright. The restaurant is in what was the local primary and junior school for the village and surrounding area and closed in 1977. Originally opened around 1983 as a tea-room, we are now only the third owners having taken it over in 2006. Our background is in retail delicatessens as much as in restaurant food and when you visit you will see that in the refrigerated display in the restaurant. We are proud of our food and almost everything that can be made on the premises is - the list is long but includes our own bread, all the cakes, desserts and traybakes, home cooked ham, our own jam, cranberry sauce, hummus and much more. We are open from 10 am serving food all day through to last orders at 6 pm ( 4 pm some days in the winter months) but closed on a Wednesday. Whilst we are open all year we do close for a break in November and go into hibernation for January.

Excellent light lunch, service was prompt and friendly. Good coffee. The food was delicious, waiter advised that everything made on the premises and some items fresh out of the garden that morning. Would most definitely return, keep up the good work.

Ate at The Schoolhouse on Sunday lunchtime. Delighted with the vegetable and cheese pie in a wonderful pastry crust. The cheesecake was good too. Friendly staff and a chance to eat something vegetarian for Sunday lunch rather than being offered a roast dinner.

We stopped en route for the boat having wanted to before. Available tables all had reserved signs, but this wasn't the case, apparently, and we were seated. We ordered two soups, and two treat-cakes for the kids. The cakes and drinks arrived; no soup. The kids finished; no soups. We chased them up, were considering leaving due to time pressure, but the soups arrived - one as ordered, one not. We ate them - and very nice they were - as under time pressure but when mentioned at tge time of paying, the mix-up was denied (despite order being correct.) once the mix-up was agreed, the on,y response was we should have spoken up despite waiting 25 mins for the soup and not daring to reorder for time pressure.

Our verdict - food was all very nice, the service very pleasant but the venue seemed to need more staff and to be more responsive to genuine customer concerns.
