“70th Birthday dinner”
Reviewed 10 May 2013

We were at the above on Wednesday for a 70th birthday dinner for a cousin. It was a lovely night, food was very good and plenty to choose from. The service was excellent more so when there were 14 of us and choosing from the a la carte as well as a specials menu. This is a family run business would certainly recommend for food, service and decor.

Very pleasant one night stop over, although the hotel was very quite - didn't expect much more on a Monday night in January.

Checked in and shown to my room by a very pleasant receptionist. Room was clean, well furnished and very comfortable. at back of hotel so quiet too.

Sat down stairs in the bar for a while working and no complaints tyhat I was onlt drinking tap water!. Pleasant meal and good service. I was in a hurry the next morning and the chef kindly started breakfast service 3 minute early.

I have stayed at the Kings Arms on 2 occasions for business rather than golf, although on my next visit the clubs could well find themselves in the car.

On both occasions, I've found the owners and their staff to be very hospitable, friendly and helpful. The rooms are as you would expect of a small town hotel, everything working as it should. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or evening meal, the food is of excellent quality, tasty and plentiful.

The prices aren't exorbitant with my last 2 night stay including all meals, drinks and a business lunch for 3 that I hosted, coming in at £200.

There are slight downsides to the hotel, broadband only available downstairs, en-suite a little small, but the upsides far out-weigh these minor issues.

It's so nice when you are away to have the option of a place like the Kings Arms, rather than the over-priced, corporate, faceless chain type hotels. They could all learn by coming to places like this and see how to treat guests rather than the "computer says NO" attitude.

David and Val were the perfect hosts, all their staff provided very good and friendly service. The food was excellent with plenty of choices. The location was ideal for our golfing break and David was most helpful and proactive in ensuring we got to play golf every day despite the adverse weather conditions. Overall it was very good value and we will definately be returning..

12 hungry golfers had a fantastic few days staying at the Kings Arms. The service from the owners and staff was extremely good. Rooms were pleasant and very clean. The food was just the ticket for us after a hard days golfing with good choices for all 3 courses. On our last day the golf course that we were booked into was closed due to the wet weather. The course rang the hotel owner David to let us know. David did no more than ring Powfoot Golf Club and booked us in there. His knowledge of all the golf courses in the area was superb. We will be returning to the Kings Arms.

Castle Douglas is not a large town however if you walk the length of the King Street (the main road) looking for somewhere to have a lunch you’ll find it is quite long and that there are a number of places to choose from! Unfortunately I couldn’t see anything likely to appeal to my Mum and I’d almost given up when a local shop assistant suggested the King’s Arms. (The location map on TA is incorrect at time of writing as the hotel is just off King Street, on St Andrews Street, not by Carlingwark Loch as indicated).

It’s a very traditional small town place which has a Scottish Tourist Board “Inn” rating of 3 stars. The dining area combines with the lounge bar which is comfortable. We were met by a very friendly member of staff who was happy to show us the menu and make us feel welcome. Both were selling points for my Mum and we stayed to have a decent relaxing lunch. Don’t be expecting any fancy presentations on the plate - it’s all simply done and tasted fine - my Mum loved it as did a number of other guests who were enjoying a bite to eat and a drink. Our bill for two mains, one dessert and a couple of drinks was £28 which was good value for money. Homely, relaxing spot for lunch in our experience and extra star added for warm service.

We are the Ayrshire Lassies and we have been going to the Kings Arms for several years now and would never think of staying anywhere else. The staff and the owners, Pauline and David, are absolutely brilliant. They cater for your every need. The food is soooo gooood!! Too much - we have to ask for smaller portions. Ideal if you want to play golf - plenty of courses close at hand. Make a booking - you will not regret it. It may not be a five star hotel, but the service you get is better than five star.
