Two night break away with friends. Arrival disappointing as told my booking was not registered, despite my confirming by telephone. Provided with alternative twin rooms, not the booked doubles. Without electric heaters you could become hypothermic. Decor a bit tired and in need of a makeover, however, on saying that we had a great weekend as the staff were so helpful and friendly and the food excellent.

We're just back from a weekend break at the Douglas Arms. We booked a £69 2 night weekend deal and I have to say it was excellent value for money! The food was delicious both nights and breakfast was excellent too. Staff at the hotel were very nice and helpful they couldn't do enough for us, they are very hard working. When we arrived we were told we had a twin room not what we had asked for, we were told that the hotel was full until the next morning then they would move us to another room. Needless to say the room we were given in the first instance was fine. Newly done up, TV, bathroom with shower, all the little bottles of shampoo shower gel, soap, and hand cream all provided too! Nice towels everything was lovely. Kettle with coffee, tea, biscuits, chocolates in room too, nice bed linen and the room was clean. Next day we were moved to the honeymoon suite and it was superb!! Jacuzzi and all :) Nice log fire in the dining room. Bar prices very good too. :) Only thing I will say that would help with first impressions is the reception area was very dark and poor looking, but I know they are working their way round the hotel decorating and I'd rather have a nice room first before anything else! The only bad thing about this weekend was we both had bad colds and there was nothing anyone could do about that ;) Thanks to all staff for making our stay a pleasure. Linda and Ronnie :)

We're just back from a fantastic weekend away at the Douglas Arms and enjoyed it so much we're already planning our next trip. I've honestly got nothing bad to say about the place but in the interest of constructive criticism I'll give a few points later that people may want to take into account.
We booked a £69 weekend break which included 2 nights bed and breakfast with a 2 course meal with wine on the first night, chocolates in our room and a free bottle of wine with dinner if we ate in the restaurant the 2nd night.
To be honest I didn't really expect that much as the price was so cheap. How wrong I was, we had an absolutely fabulous weekend from the moment we arrived. A lot of this can be credited to the staff, they were warm, welcoming and friendly. They couldn't have been more helpful and nothing was a problem. A special mention to Amanda and Melvin, lovely, helpful and great fun.
They really made our stay.
We arrived about 8.15pm on a Friday night. Amanda checked us in and took us to our room which was a family room on the first floor. It was a large room with a double and a single bed, chest of drawers, a wardrobe and even room for a cot. Everything was clean and tidy and the bathroom looked recently refurbished. There is also a lovely lounge area where you can sit and read or access the internet. There is wifi throughout the hotel but this is a great little hot spot.
We dumped our bags and headed down to the restaurant. The last orders for food is 8.30pm and as we'd arrived so late we asked if we could move our 2 course meal to the next night. This wasn't a problem at all. We spent the rest of the night in the bar talking to the staff and the locals who were all very friendly. The bar itself has a magnificent log fire, pool table and juke box.
Breakfast the next morning was fantastic. Fresh made to order fry ups all round as we'd had a bit of a late night in the bar! This is so much better than the tepid, tired buffet breakfasts that a lot of hotels are doing now.
After breakfast we had a walk about Castle Douglas town centre. It's a lovely quaint little town with lots of character. There was plenty of shops nearby the hotel to keep us occupied including lots of charity and nick nack shops, book store, vintage clothing, bookies, sports bar, Chinese takeaway and kebab shop.
We had planned to do a few excursions in and around Castle Douglas but unfortunately the weather had other ideas. As all our activities were outdoors we decided to stay in the hotel as the heavens had opened up. Again we had a lovely time simply sitting with other guests and watching Saturday afternoon football.
We did make one excursion which was archery at Galloway outdoor centre (I have reviewed this separately). The roaring log fire in the bar was a welcome sight when we came in from the rain.
We went to the restaurant around 5pm and had the whole place to ourselves. The food was outstanding. I would have paid the £69 just for the meal and wine alone. Starters were the DA tower as I had read good reviews about it, and potato wedges with cheese and bacon. Both were excellent, especially the 'secret sauce' that comes with the DA tower. Mains were sticky chicken and Chinese chicken curry. Again both outstanding and huge portions. Amanda had recommended the sticky chicken and it turned out to be the dish of the night, I can highly recommend. Our son had a burger and chocolate fudge cake and he scoffed the lot, he assured us it was lovely! The wine was particularly good, a bottle of Sauvignon blanc that I would definitely order again.
Saturday night was spent in the bar playing pool, singing along to the juke box and gabbing with all and sundry. A great time was had by all.
The hotel itself is a lovely place, full of character and very warm and inviting. If you're looking for 5 star luxury in soulless modern surroundings then this probably isn't the place for you. If you want a place with personality and character where good old fashioned hospitality is key then you'd be mad to miss out on this gem of a place.
As I said before I will mention some things that may put people off, this actually just feels like nit picking to me but I wanted to address some things that I had read.
1. The shower pressure is a little low. Is it a power shower? No. Is it hot and adequate for the weekend? Absolutely. Also the little bottles of shampoo and shower gel are a nice touch. Another nice touch is that housekeeping come in after one night to change your towels and restock your tea/coffee and toiletries.
2. The room was a little chilly at night.....but it's November and we expected that. Plus the plethora of blankets in the wardrobe quickly remedied this.
3. The TV's are old and ours made a buzzing noise when turned up loud. This really wasn't an issue as we didn't come away to watch TV. It was perfectly fine for the short time we used it and it had freeview.
4. And this really does feel like nit picking as it's nothing to do with the hotel. There is a clock with a bell tower next to the hotel and it chimes every 15 minutes starting at 8am so if you're a light sleeper and want a lie in then this may be a problem for you. It wasn't a problem for us, it just meant we didn't have to set our alarm to get up for the delicious breakfast!!
Such a good time was had that we are planning to go back for a week in the summer. Great food, lovely people, comfortable homely surroundings, you really couldn't ask for more. This is one of those places that you find and keep going back to.

Very dark when you arrive at reception, carpets worn and very dirty. The room we were in lamp shades were thick with a layer of dust as was headboard and skirting boards.Bedlinen had hairs and tv did not work you had to jiggle with scart lead. They allow dogs in this hotel which may be ok with some guest but next door was 3 dogs then another room with 2 dogs,I would not want to sleep in a room after 3 dogs had been there.
The meal the first night was good, the second night was awful,I left my main and my sweet.
Heating was not working in dining room, log fire first day....lovely, second day no fire or heating.
Will not be returning.
