“Shame About The Bathroom”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2012

We stayed for 3 nights on a Groupon deal and had dinner on 2 of the 3 nights included. The first night was excellent and we could not fault the food. Unfortunately, on the 2nd night it was the chef's day off and "someone else from the hotel" was cooking. Lasagne & chips! Although it was okay, what a let down from the previous meal. The staff were all very friendly and couldn't do enough. The room was a good size and was very clean. The grounds of the hotel and the views from the hotel are lovely and we enjoyed sitting outside with a drink. We were fortunate to have sunny weather and this was a great place to base ourselves as there is a lot to do in the surrounding area for both grown ups and children.
But, the bathroom was dreadful. It had a suite approx 50 years old (not kidding - bathrooms are what I do for a living). There was no shower facility at all, which was difficult with 2 adults and a 14 year old girl sharing the room (two females with long hair). When I asked at reception for a push on hose fitting for the taps, they immediately offered the use of the room across the hall which had a shower, all be it almost as old as our bathroom, but it was a vast improvement.
We would got back to this hotel, but not until the owner puts his hand in his pocket and sorts out the bathrooms.

Room Tip: We had room 4, which was a great size. It was very quiet. I don't think there is much of an issu...

We booked a double room from the groupon deal, this included dinner on one night and breakfast each morning. On arrival we were informed that we would in fact be staying in a double room (despite phoning to check this the previous night). Sharon on reception went out of her way to ensure that we were in a double room. The room did not match up to the pictures on the website but it was clean, a small tv with freeview and en suite bathroom. The drive up to the hotel is picturesque and we walked down in it many times to access the local town. Rabbits and bunnies could be seen running around the drive way.

We arrived late on the Friday as we were both working so headed straight for the dinner which was part of the deal. We both enjoyed our three course meal and decided that we would have to eat in the hotel again the next day. The staff were friendly and the chef made an effort to welcome us and make conservation throughout the night. I have previously worked in hotels and know that many chef's would not make this effort for the guests.

We had planned to spend the second night out in the town but due to the rain decided to spend a night in the hotel bar. This was fun and gave us another chance to get to know the staff better. We visited the local wildlife park and there was castle's, forrests and walks close by. We were advised that there may be another groupon deal later in the year and we would love to return as two nights was not long enough to experience everything on offer!

Overall, the rooms were dated but quaint and I would advise anyone going to eat in the hotel!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 17 and heard no noise from others in the hotel or outside despite looking onto the...

This was a booking via Groupon for a 3 night stay....not a wise move for Groupon ratings ! Driveway to hotel makes you think it is going to a nice country house hotel. Reception area quite poor quality, wasn't sure anyone was going to come to reception. Once receptionist arrived, she was pleasant enough and showed us to our room (20). Room carpet, disgusting to say the least, think it has saw every stain imaginable. There were about 10 flies buzzing around in the room, we did go and ask for fly killer which they did bring to the room for us ! The bathroom was clean, but fixings hanging off wall. The whole of the room decor so old and dated. Bed not very comfortable and a four poster bed (how out of date is that these days). Mould on walls and ceilings and curtains too thin. TV was an old 12inch CRT ! Two hairdriers though, only because one had a dodgy connection. Breakfast was ok, eggs cooked to your liking, toast ok and was refilled if requested, generally the quality of the food was ok. We did have an offer of staying for dinner with our groupon order, but were so put off with the surrounding rooms and our bedroom that we didn't trust the dinner so really can't comment on that, it was just our feeling and impression that made us not take dinner.
The hotel is old, the decor is out of date, but it is the cleanliness of the carpet that got us, really there is no need for that in this day and age. Your first impressions will put you off. We did stay for two out of the three nights, just couldn't handle the dirty carpet anymore.
Castle Douglas nice location for sightseeing, can recommend the italien restaurant on main street.

Room Tip: Check in to another hotel !

We stayed three nights with a groupon discount in a refurbished room. This was clean, spacious and comfortable. The bathroom had not yet been refurbished, had a bath rather than a shower and no hair dryer. But these were minor points. The grounds were extensive, wooded and beautiful, if a little unkempt. The food was good and the service excellent. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time and would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room

We booked two nights b&b dinner first night through Groupon ,food good, staff helpful & friendly ,hotel could do with a blank cheque spent on it.urrounding area lovely but badly let down by lack of T.L.C.

P.S. Bring your own toilet rolls and sheets and cleaning materials .

PPS. I kid you not.

Room Tip: Ask for refurbished room.

We spent 2 lovely sunny days here in june.
Yes its looking a bit dated, but we felt the decor was in keeping with the outside, and its location.
Our dog Midnight loved been taking for walks in the grounds, and was spoilt by the staff.
The food was exceptional, the chef is a credit to the hotel and a good laugh aswell. The rest of the staff work tirelessly and were always helpful and polite.
We found our room to be clean and a good size.
If they ever again come up on groupon I wont hesitate to rebook.
Anyone who has booked and a bit unsure about some of the negative reveiws, just come and enjoy a quite break away.If you want shinney stainless steel everywhere then book the ritz(on groupon)but if you like a bit of character come here, and dont be a stuck up fusspot with no imagination.
