“Quiet, Restful break”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

Just returned from a 3 day trip at the Urr Valley which was a half-board deal. On entering the hotel it was like stepping back in time, quirky and quaint - exactly what we wanted, not everyone wants clinical and contempory. I must say prior to our stay we read a great many Trip Advisor reviews and we came very close to cancelling our booking. I am so pleased we chose not to! We have had a marvellous, quiet, restful break which is exactly what we wanted. Yes, the hotel is in great need of an upgrade and some TLC as it very tired, however we were very pleased on arrival to find the public areas smelt fresh and recently polished, not musty and dirty as some people had written! Our room was huge (room 4) and although it had an eclectic assortment of furniture we personally found it quirky and charming. The bed was very comfortable with a brand new mattress and the views from our windows were lovely, we had 3 really good nights sleep. The bathroom did not have a shower but that was my fault as I did not specify this when I booked. We were told the bathroom refits are all starting next week and they certainly do need it, but again, the bathroom was clean with good quality towels and complimentary toiletries. As this is a very old building there are stairs to virtually every area so not very good for wheelchair access. The food at breakfast and dinner was good and hearty and the portion sizes were HUGE! with plenty of choice. They were very short staffed whilst we were there but the staff worked very hard and were always pleasant and cheery. The grounds are beautiful and steeped in history and we had some lovely after dinner walks. I did find some of the comments on Trip Advisor were downright cruel and unnecessary. At the present time, the Urr Valley is very much in need of the planned refurbishment, but go with an open mind and if it is peace and quiet you want you will not find a better place and with the present deals they are offering you will not find anything better value for money, however, if you like 5* luxury, don't book a hotel offering budget deals then moan about it later!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have baths and others showers, make sure you specify a preference when you book.

Got a great deal on a bed, breakfast and murder mystery night. Hotel has a remote feel to its location and was a nice retreat. Had an okay room which was comfortable, but badly needs some updating. Breakfast was good.

But the reason we went was for the Grease-themed dinner and the show... Which was fantastic! Unsure of what to expect for our first murder mystery dinner, we were not disappointed! My mother and I had some excellent laughs and came away with a great story and memory! We plan to return for future shows, as it was brilliantly done. The actors and staff worked very hard to make the evening a great success! Thanks for the amazing night and a great memory!

we only came here for a meal, access to the bar was ok with the wheelchair but no chance for the restaurant, its up a flight of stairs! so we had to eat in the bar, the food was good (if you didn't order the new york chicken which is chicken wrapped in bacon with bbq sauce covered in melted cheese sounds great but was left under the grill/hot lamps far too long that the cheese had practically vulcanised and the bacon was so crispy it shattered when stabbed) the bar had no fridges at all, so anything other than coke which they seemed to have in a fridge elsewhere was warm and the choice of draft was very limited (2 lagers and 1 beer& guinness only available in cans) and on the way out had to ask permission to go through what seemed to be a teenage disco to access the wheelchair ramp out all in all, as other reviewers have said tired with a need of some TLC

Stayed on a deal for B&B with dinner. Must say this made the value good however I would not pay full price.

Here for proximity to dark sky park for astrophotography. Close enough but you need to drive further West and North.

Hotel is walkable to Castle Douglas town centre but only if dry. Would be a pain otherwise and a bit isolated. Quiet though which is nice.

Didn't like walking past all the diners up to reception and then the room. Layout strange.

Place looks tired and the number of cobwebs and dirty windows was a worry. Not good. Bedroom really basic but functional. Bathroom tired and old but functional. Old shower was ok.

Could hear other doors closing too easily but slept ok.

Dinner was just ok. Soup ok, steak pie nice and chocolate cake nice. Service for a 1/5th full room was painfully slow. Over 2 hours for 3 courses.

Young chap was friendly but please give him a hand! Not enough staff.

Breakfast was better. A bit quicker.

Overall if you need to be close to this postcode its a roll of a dice choice depending on price. I'd stay elsewhere next time.

Myself and a group of friends stayed at the Urr Valley Hotel overnight on Saturday 17th of August, having read quite a few dodgy reviews about the place I wasn't sure what I was letting myself in for!
My requirements when booking a hotel are not easy to satisfy, in this case I needed rooms for 6 people ( all males ) and private, secure parking for our motorbikes as we were touring the area for a couple of days, so the Urr Valley Hotel suited my requirements exactly, just far enough outside of Castle Douglas to be nice and private and quiet, but close enough to walk in for a curry on the night.

As has already been mentioned in previous reviews, the Hotel decor does look a bit tired and slightly run down, apparently it is under new ownership now, but they have only been there a couple of months and funds will only allow so much renovation at a time.
However, I have to say, the bedding and towels etc were immaculately clean and brand new.
My room, no 11 was slightly tired decor again, but a decent size and really quiet, I never heard a voice or a door slam all night, so I slept like a log!

Breakfast the next morning was ok, perfectly acceptable and the staff were all pleasant and helpful - no complaints with them at all.

Whilst we were having breakfast, I asked the guys what their verdict on the hotel was and the general consensus was that for our needs, it was fine, it wasn't the Ritz by any stretch of the imagination, but we all agreed we would use it again, we all said that we wouldn't bring our Wives here as they would probably find something to complain about, but for our needs ( Bike parking etc ) it was fine.

Just to add some perspective here to the posts that are complaining about this hotel, they seem to have overlooked the fact that we paid around £50 per night bed and breakfast, a good deal we thought.
These people could be justified for having a moan about this hotel if you'd paid £90 - £110 per person for the night, but I think some of them may have lost the balance in the value for money equation, i.e. if you want a posh Hotel then expect to pay top-dollar for it.

It suited our needs adequately.

Looks promising from the outside but soon the reality hits that nobody has been interested in maintaining this poor, unloved building. Mould, dirt and grime all over and many problem areas could be fixed up quite easily but have been left for a long time. Our first room had hair all over the sink, so they moved us to a different room which had a bath. However we didn't want to use the bath as there was rust all over the plug hole. The toilet brush was full of dirt. (YUCK). Another thing that could have been easily resolved if anyone cared a bit about the place. The cups in the room were dirty. The dressing table seat was too low to see yourself in the mirror. Not much choice of drinks in the bar. And was horrified to look up at the light and see sticky yellow fly catcher paper hanging in strips from it, covered with dead flies! ARGH! Then we went in for dinner and the table cloth had stains on it and a hole in it! Dinner was passable. Bed not very comfortable. But it was handy for 7 Stanes which we enjoyed a lot.

Room Tip: Wouldn't recommend the visit.

My partner and I returned yesterday from a superb three day stay at this ancient historic hotel. Our first impressions going up the tree lined avenue with trees hundreds of years old, was that it reminded one of approaching a stately home, and this is what this house once was.
The reception staff were very friendly and showed us to our room which was spotlessly clean, bed comfortable and we got fresh towels every day. There was also ample tea, sugar, coffee milk etc. and toiletries were replenished every day. (more than we ever got in the Hilton or Marriott)
This hotel has been recently taken over by new management and due to its age is in need of repair to the outside roof, but inside it is spotlessly clean, new carpets throughout and new bathroom suits and showers installed. Due to its age it is built on different levels with winding corridors but these add to its charm. Management told us much of its history which goes back over 400years.
The young chef was brilliant and the food was superb cooking some mouth watering meals. The waitress was very efficient but the only drawback we felt was that extra staff is needed, as it is busy at meal times and too much for one waitress.
This hotel is set in a rural area with cattle farms near by so one must be prepared for the conditions which these will create. And the most effective and hygienic way to control flying pests is with flypaper - albeit - these may look unsightly. Perhaps changing them more often would help but flypaper does the job excellently.
Overall we found it excellent value for money, the staff were friendly and helpful, food delicious and a good supply of spirits reasonably priced. There had been a party in a few days earlier who depleted the beer and they were waiting on a fresh delivery but bottled cider and lager was available.
We would definitely stay at this beautiful quaint castle like hotel again.

Room Tip: Our room no 15 was excellent with a very large bathroom and a good shower. comfortable bed, iron, k...
