We had a couple of days at the Easter weekend at this hotel which has recently been taken over. The hotel was warm, clean, with fresh linen and towels, but still in need of some TLC but the hosts were at pains to explain that they were having to do things slowly. The food could have been better, steak pie served with only chips, (no veg) and was very dry, as though the gravy had been poured on after, and the meat not cooked in it. Ale batter fish was a bit over cooked - I'm sure things will improve. We had a flat tyre and as we went to fix it, the people from the Dutch Pancake facility offered us tea and pancakes for free! And some guys who were painting the outside of the hotel also offered to help us. The staff were nice, one girl especially who served us in the bar and then at dinner, was particularly chatty and informative. Really lovely. The price of the alcohol was a bit steep we thought and the bar bill was almost as dear as the two nights we spent including breakfast! The breakfast by the way was plentiful and very enjoyable.

Just got back after a 2 night stay we only paid £59 for the weekend and even received a bottle of wine on arrival
We didn't expect a 5 star hotel before we went and it never claims to be that but can honestly say it's a very nice old hotel with plenty if character our room was very light and roomy an the food and staff very good
Breakfast was very nice infact can't complain about nothing just don't turn up expecting a quality 5 star hotel and I can guarantee you won't be disappointed

We are just back from two nights stay. Our room was very large with a four poster bed and large bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, shampoo, shower gels, soap provided both days with lovely fresh towels each day, the room was clean, fresh and warm. The staff from the minute we arrived to the minute we left were lovely and welcoming and couldnt do enough for you. We had dinner both nights in hotel and the food was lovely and fresh. We are not big breakfast eaters but what we had was lovely and the portion sizes at dinner and breakfast were more than enough. If your looking for a peaceful getaway i would recommend. The hotel is going through an upgrade but it did not make our stay any less enjoyable. Good luck to you all at Urr Valley

Well worth a visit if you are considering the area. We have just returned from a 2 night stay. Price was unbelievably inexpensive and is probably best described as a work in progress as suggested by previous poster. Owners are very friendly and helpful and the waitress in the bar and dining room is a great asset to what hopefully will be a growing business. Food was plentiful, hot and presented very well. We would have no hesitation in visiting again or recommending it as a great base for visiting the area especially if on a budget.

very nice owners and staff, although its a job in progress. very attentive to my wife who is disabled they couldn't do enough for us.i think the woman was called angela who was very hands on running round trying to get things done.they have only had the place for a year, breakfast was excellent really enjoyed both morning, they were prepared to give my wife jelly for breakfast if thats what she wanted. would really go back if my wife was well enough to travel that far. no complaints.very nice people and i feel that with time it will get better

Room Tip: our first room was bit dark and depressing i asked to be moved they were very happy to acommodate.

We wwere a group of five and enjoyed our stay and with a bargain break deal it was value for money coming in at less than B&B prices.

However there were elements of Fawlty towers; coffee was instant in sachets, breakfast fruit was tinned, food had to be brought about 100 yds from the kitchen, some silver jugs in the firegrate hadn't be shown a silver polish for many a month, wi-fi in the reception rooms was flaky, our bedrooom door was stiff and we needed one to turn the key and the other to pull in order to open it, no-smokikng labels were peeling and faded and our lovely cheerful waitress forgot to bring us the dessert menu. Shower pressure was very variable ;-(

The area is great and highly recommended and the Nat trust for Scotland Threave gardens were spectacular.

Room Tip: Ask for a front room
