booked with late rooms , i agree with previous entry beautiful situation but definatly needs upgrading and the food was very poor quality. we had a problem with our meal and did recieve an apology as the regular chef apparently had a day off!!!!!!This hotel has such potential what a waste .

Having read others reviews we were expecting good things but, we were disappointed from the outset.

We agree that the hotel has a good location to Castle Douglas and good views. However there are a few problems with the hotel such as an unpleasant smell throughout the lounge and dining areas, the fixtures and fittings are dated and require upgrading and the dead insects litter the window sills throughout.

We dined in the restaurant off the à la carte menu one evening and the food was very, very poor. For example my partner requested a medium steak however it came rare and was burnt on the outside and the vegetables which accompanied the meal where undercooked. In addition the restaurant was invested with flies and we requested to move to the bar area so we could finish our meal. Regards the à la carte pricing of the food the Urr Valley are charging prices which do not relate to the quality of the dishes.

Our room was very basic which is expected from a 3 star however it was unclean e.g. cigarette burns on the bed covers (which were not changed for the duration of our stay) and the bathroom shower curtain was filthy and smelled of dampness.

Maybe we had a bad experience compared with others who reviewed but we will most defiantly never return to this hotel.

Dumfries and Galloway is beautiful with lovely scenery and loads to do. We recommend a trip to both Sandyhills and Rockcliffe beaches on the Solway Coast, for great food visit either Gatehouse of Fleet which has a wonderful gastro pub called the Masonic Arms and if you are there before mid-September 2006 and have the cash check out the award winning The Plumed Horse restaurant for fantastic food and a memorable experience.

Booked this hotel for a short weekend break, 5 minutes from Castle Douglas, on arrival the long tree lined driveway made a grand entrance, and the old building is also very pretty. Our room overlooked the front on the hotel and a great view of the countryside. The room was clean and comfortable and looked freshly painted. We had dinner in the restaurant upstairs, a cosy room with great service and even better food, all tasted fresh and nothing pre packed as you seem to get in other hotels! The log fires in the lounge and the friendly bar staff all made for a nice after dinner drink. We can wait to return again to the Urr Valley Hotel. Many thanks to you all for a lovely weekend.

My friend and I stayed at Urr Valley in July 2005 - food was fantastic (thanks Richard), superb setting with many majestic trees and a fabulous outlook across open farmland.

The owners and staff were exceptionally friendly - we felt totally at home from the minute we set foot in the hotel.

Room rates and menu prices are very fair. The hotel is a few minutes walk from Castle Douglas town centre, but there is also a bus service which passes the gates.

Looking forward to my next visit to Urr Valley!

I went there on recommendation of a friend for my honeymoon. It was absolutely fantastic. The staff could not do enough for us. A wonderful time started with a tour of the whole estate, clay-pigeon shooting and finished with fantastic meals in the restaurant including venison and fresh salmon. There were opportunities for salmon fishing and shooting game. The accomodation was excellent and service supreme. We cannot wait for our 10th aniversary when we plan to return there.
