We had perfect weather for our visit and were greeted by a very enthusiastic gentleman in the gift shop, who explained the best way around and what not to miss. He said, "...please do walk on the grass and explore". We also bought a map for 50p, which was money well spent as we would almost certainly have missed something otherwise.
The whole park is beautifully laid out, a lovely mix of formal garden and slightly tamed wilderness. Would definitely go again.

Very peaceful, but not very big, and could do with a bit more signage.
I think they were getting ready for a night time event, and there were cables everywhere.

If you are a fan of horticulture, wildlife, history and architecture then this property is a must see!

My fiance and I recently joined the NTS and Threave Estate was one of our main reasons for choosing the Galloway area for our holiday. The estate certainly did not disappoint! We arrived midmorning on a glorious hot and sunny day- perfect for taking our time in the gardens.

There is so much to see and we're told the gardens change regularly due to the Horticultural School on site. we were greeted by a very enthusiastic and welcoming member of staff at the gift shop. Unfortunately we cannot recall the gentleman's name, but he really made our day. He, and his other colleagues in the shop were pleased to see a young couple visiting (we are in our late 20's) and were very helpful. We purchased the guidebook and estate maps and he very helpfully recommended different areas of the garden to us, which ensured we didn't miss any beds or areas that we would otherwise have not seen.

We enjoyed the gardens at our own pace, but we didn't use the cafe facilities as we had brought our own picnic lunch. The NTS staff helpfully told us that we were welcome to enjoy our picnic anywhere in the gardens. We later returned to the gift shop to book a tour in Threave House, which was fascinating and the tour guide was knowledgeable.

We were also pleased to see that there were a number of bird hides situated in the gardens and in the wider estate. We were thrilled to spot several Greater Spotted Woodpeckers, and later drove to the Osprey Centre near Threave Castle and saw two Ospreys feeding.

I'm sure that the gardens would be beautiful in any weather but the great weather allowed us to spend our whole day in the Estate. It was the highlight of our holiday and we would definitely return again.

There's a lot to see in the gardens with many different areas, there's a gardening school based here so there's always a lot going on. The Sunday lunch in the restaurant of traditional Scottish dishes was delicious.
Entry is free to NT or NTS members.
Throve castle a short drive or 30 minute walk away is also very interesting including a short ferry crossing.

Unfortunately it was torrential rain on the day of our visit. Interesting gardens with different themed sections. Average café -staff pleasant..
