“Quiet, comfortable little bolthole”
Reviewed 11 July 2010

I travelled with my teenage daughter, and two elderly female relatives who would have had difficulty with lots of stairs so this ground floor flat was ideal as there were only 3 or 4 steps up into the main accommodation. The flat was quietly situated and surrounded by fields (although, as said in other reviews, it is just off a main road, but we felt this didn't detract from the peace of the place). Parking was ample and we were able to get the car up to the door for ease of access for mum and aunt. The only downside for them was that they couldn't use the shower in the flat as it was an over-bath one.

The accommodation was pretty much as described on the website, very well furnished and equipped, with supplies on arrival (which we were grateful for as we arrived late) of milk, rolls, scones and fresh fruit - the fridge also being well stocked with butter pats, little jars of jam, cold ham etc. There was also a thoughtful supply of teabags, toilet rolls, towels a-plenty, and clean, comfy beds. The kitchen was fully equipped with fridge, microwave, full cooker, and even a wee dishwasher.

This is a great base from which to explore the 'hidden gem' which Dumfries and Galloway is: the accommodation is only minutes away from Castle Douglas which has fabby, independent shops in plenty to browse through. It is also only a few minutes away from the National Trust's Threave Estate with its wonderful gardens and house. Hopefully we'll be back!

We had the Carlingwark Suite and so were amply provided for with wardrobes and drawers! Lavish welcoming pack of rolls and fruit. A well-equipped kitchen and excellent living room accommodation. Single beds were very comfortable. We did not use the laundry room but it was excellent, fully equipped with no extra charge!
Ground floor flat and so occasional noise from abpve.
The Old Exchange easy to find and convenient for local sites.

I am a very fussy customer but I can honestly say I would recommend this place to anyone.
The owner Charlie was absolutely lovely, the unit was just as the photos on the web. Situated just off the main road (but hardly any noise disturbance) so giving great access to all of the Galloway coast & the Galloway forest. This area has so much to offer, but luckily not many people seem to have discovered it so when we walked we hardly saw a soul!
The welcome pack was a nice touch. We felt very private & it was lovely to retreat to every evening.

Booked the 2 bedroom unit for a week over the Easter holidays. Easy to find, spotlessly clean and modern- generous welcome pack of foods on arrival. Living/ Dining area a lot smaller than it looks on the website, especially the kitchen but adequate for holiday house for family with small children- bit cramped for 4 adults. Kitchen well equipped, heating via electric heaters but fine and no extra charge, constant hot water with good size bathroom.

What is not immediately clear from the website is that the one bedroom units are upstairs above the 2 beds so there is some related noise depending on the occupants, but not enough to be an issue.

Excellent location for exploring the area as close by the main road but no noise problem. Good walks from right outside the door or easy access to drive to anywhere in the region. No great play/ garden space around the building itself for kids to run around.

Presently they are working on an additional larger unit adjacent to the existing building for rental probably later in 2009.
