my annual trip to Gullane & had a lovely lunch as always. Fillet steak with pepper sauce ~ yum.

good choice from a la carte but also a black board with a reasonable selection ~ i didn't have pudding but again there was a good choice.

happy 50th year in the same family to you all & have a great time this weekend :)

Room Tip: i only had lunch so can't comment on the rooms.

We booked this location 18 months prior to The Open 2013. I did not read reviews until near time to leave for Scotland. Some were not so favorable, so I was expecting the worst. Those giving negative reviews were obviously not at The Mallard for a good time. We went for The Open and for the guys to play golf. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the food was fresh, varied, and abundant, the owners were most accommodating, and the staff was delightful. The location was perfect to get to Muirfield, the Gullane courses, Kilspindie, the beach, the pubs, and the shops. No, The Mallard is not The Hilton or Ritz Carlton, but we weren't there to lounge about in splendor (or pay the prices attached). . . . we were there to have a great experience, and WE DID!

Room Tip: The staff will let you choose from what's available. Know in advance it's over a pub, so th...

We stayed at the Mallard Hotel for 2 nights during August.
We had a Room on the top floor, good beds, clean shower, great view over the countryside, just everything you need to have a great stay in Gullane. We were lucky to have a special dinner downstairs, the theme was: Mediterranean Dinner. The menu was short, original and with 15 pounds for 3 courses an outstanding deal. The food was fresh, well cocked, the home made kofta cam right from the grill-

The staff was very young, quick, friendly and the perfect rounding for this night. After Dinner, you have the possibility to have a drink at the bar in the room next to the dining area.

Breakfast was good also: nothing fancy, delicious, no matter if we had scottish or continental, the perfect start for a day at the golf course, the beach or hiking outside of Edinburgh.

We will be back soon, if you ever have the chance to visit Gullane or if you are out for some high quality golf courses, stay at the Mallard, you wont regret it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor, with a view over the countryside!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and in particular the themed Mediterranean Night. We believe that these nights offer very good value for money and a fun way to spend an evening.

We are also glad that you enjoyed the excellent view of Gullane's golf courses from the room that you occupied.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Mallard on your next visit to Scotland.

Food was very good and waiting staff were very friendly and efficient, the the venue lacked atmosphere but may have been better if more people were around. Can't comment on the rooms as we only had a evening meal.

We are very pleased that you enjoyed the home cooked food we offer at the Mallard and that the service was friendly. We are however sorry that you felt that the place lacked atmosphere. Perhaps we should have background music playing when we are quiet?

Your review is titled "would not return" but we do hope that you will reconsider and perhaps return for the food and service. Thank you for your input.

Have stayed here twice in the past four years, the latest a full week's stay for the 2013 Open at Muirfield just up the street, and enjoyed the place immensely. The negative and more critical comments by some in their reviews on this site seem excessive and unfair. The Mallard is clearly not a certain kind of overdone 21st-century hotel with endless luxuries (and I greatly appreciate it for that). It is a place with a long history in the area and a smaller owner-operated family-run hotel of a certain British style that has character and plenty of comfort. The hotel sits right on the edge of the 54-hole Gullane Golf Club with beautiful views to Gullane Hill and is an easy walk to everything really, the center of the village, the numerous golf courses, the many inland and coastal walking paths. For a golfing group, this would be a fantastic base; so many great golf courses, including Gullane right out the front door. Also would be great for anyone interested in exploring East Lothian in general. The Mallard has a cozy pub with reasonable prices and the dinners are good too, especially the local smoked salmon and trout and other fish. Would also recommend the pate starter and the cajun chicken and braised beef entrees. There are several other nice places and spaces within and on the hotel property too, including a small patio-type area near the front door with great views. For the price and location and comfort, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better all-around value in any kind of serious golf or tourist mecca (and Gullane and East Lothian are both). Thanks to Susan and Cameron and staff for making us feel so welcome.

My Daughter recently got married at the Mallard Hotel in Gullane. All members of the wedding party from bride to guest could not commend the Mallard enough. So much so that several guests have returned for the delicious, home cooked meals.
Basically - a faultless wedding in every way, with each need catered for it has left all members of the wedding party with wonderful memories.
My family and I are so pleased we chose the Mallard Hotel and would highly recommend this venue for a wedding and every other event.

Thank you to all Mallard staff who made this a momorable day!

We look forward to returning soon.

Thank you very much for your recent review.

We love having weddings at the Mallard. Each one is so individual and we like to take time to get to know the bride and groom so that we can really make it their day!

We wish them both a very happy life together and look forward to welcoming the bride and groom to the hotel for a complimentary 1st Anniversay meal.

Six of us on golfing trip, as previous reviewers have said the rooms are in need of some updating but all of ours were clean and everything worked O.K!, this hotel has a kind of quintisential charm that is hard to find these days, the breakfast whilst not massive was cooked freshly and the quality of produce used could not be faulted (try the ham it is delicious), the location of the Mallard is fantastic & worth the nightly rate alone, the next time we tour this area we will be back here!

Thank you very much for your very positive comments following your recent stay at the Mallard.

We are very pleased that you enjoyed the breakfasts - especially the home cooked ham! - the service and level of cleanliness.

As you say the Mallard has a charm all of its own and has a brilliant location. We look forward to welcoming you to the Mallard again on your next trip. Susan Law
