“Welcoming Guest House”
Reviewed 27 August 2013

We stayed a couple of nights at West House and can't fault it; our hosts were welcoming and offered advice on where to eat and visit. The bedroom and bathroom are well appointed. The continental breakfast, which you eat in your room, is excellent with a choice of tea/coffee, cereal, fruit juice, boiled eggs (using the automatic egg boiler), cake, home made bread, cheese, oat cakes. For those people who insist on having a cooked breakfast in the dining room on holiday, then this isn't the place for you. We decided to forego our cooked breakfast just this once and are pleased we did. Give the West House a try we certainly recommend it.

We had a very warm welcome from Richard, followed by a most welcome glass of wine. That set the tone for a very enjoyable stay: the next time we'll make sure we're there for more than one night, but this time we were on our way to the ferry (only two minutes away by car).

The room was very comfortable and the self service breakfast was the best breakfast we've had so far on this trip (10 nights at the time of writing). The self service seems a bit eccentric at first but makes perfect sense as you're not tied to the host's timetable - we were able to eat early, exactly when we wanted as we had a ferry to catch, but if we had wanted a lie-in then we wouldn't have missed anything. It's all good stuff too: fruit, yoghurt, cheese in the fridge plus home baked bread. And lemon drizzle cake...

If we're visiting the area again we'll make a point of staying at West House.

Richard and Colleen are very pleasant hosts. They gave us a warm welcome, they took time to give many advises about restaurants, hikes... One of the beaches Richard avised us was one of the most beautiful places we've seen during our trip in Scotland.
We spent there 3 nights, the room was very clean, cosy with some perks such as adaptator, hair-dryer. The cleaning products are ecological. We also really appreciate to have our breakfast in the room. During a 3 weeks tour, it's nice to sleep more and eat your breakfast in pajamas!
Colleen and Richard are excellent bakers : everyday you can taste new home-made cakes, muffins for the breakfast. The bread is also home-made and delicious (french approved!).
Thank you very much for taking such a good care of us. We'll be back for sure!

Lovely place to stay! Had a warm welcome. We immediately felt like being at home, nice room, wonderful breakfast, Colleen's self baked bread is delicious! And Ullapool is such a beautiful little village. Too bad we only stayed 1 night.
But we will surely come again! And stay longer then!

West house is very nice. The room we had was comfortable and very clean. Good place to stay to enjoy Ullapool. We loved the area so remote and wild. We would have loved to visit the outer islands, but we had no time. We will have to come and will certainly stay here. Reccomend.

My husband and I stayed in Ullapool for two nights, minimum in high peak season for room booking. Richard welcomed us warmly with a glass of wine and housekeeping information. The room number 2 was cosy with a comfortable bed and en-suite bathroom. The must is all for breakfast is provided the day before in your fridge - so no time to wake up and you can enjoy your breakfast in your pyjamas. For dinner, we would recommend the Arch Inn, much better than the Ceilidh palace, opposite to the guesthouse. Even though Richard warmly recommended the latter, we were really disappointed by the quality of food. Maybe a bad day. For those who are planning to drive in direction of Durness to explore the north highlands, it takes around 90min with the main road and it is gorgeous. Ask Richard, he will give you all tips for a nice journey.

Ullapool is glorious and West House is the perfect location. We have stayed with Colleen and Richard several times now and can't recommend West House highly enough. The rooms are beautiful with everything you need for a trip to the Highlands. The beds are very comfortable, the crisp, freshly ironed cotton bed linen is glorious. The local food and home baking are absolutely amazing. You just have to stay here........
