Yes, the weather was dry, and breezy....yet managed to see a young Sea Eagle, also seals, dolphins/porpoise on the way to the main island of Tanera Mor. It now seems the island has been sold to a London Financier; who I would expect will sell various plot on the island. The JCB's have arrived ...there is also the prospect of a helicopter pod on the island.
40 mins visit to the island is inadequate....there is hardly enough time for tea & cake; it would be nice to explore the island fully.....I did notice the new Post Office .....just at the landing point..... it surely must be one of the smallest in the UK?

Four of us went on the 3 hour cruise and had a fantastic time. On the way to the Summer Isles we were able to see White Tailed Sea Eagles, Seals and Harbour Porpoises. The weather was good and the boat and crew are fantastic. Good value for money. Highly recommended.

We went to their booking office on the pier on the Monday morning to book for the next day to be told by the lady that they were doing a 3 hour cruise that afternoon. Since we knew the weather was going to be gorgeous the next day we stuck to our timetable and booked for the Tuesday. She took our name and mobile no in case the cruise had to be cancelled but did not take a deposit, simply telling us to be their by 9.30am the next morning and we should pay then. On arriving the next morning we paid for our tickets and she pointed out the boat and told us to be at the top of the gangplank by 9.50 for boarding which we did. The weather was gorgeous by the way and since it only seats 8 people upstairs on the top of the boat we chose to sit in the main body of the boat at the back and to be honest I am glad we did. Whilst it was a glorious day being on a small boat out on the water, it can indeed be chilly. I had a tshirt with a thick padded, zip up body warmer on and still had to put on my raincoat just to keep the wind out and stop myself from feeling too cold. However the boat does have an indoor seating area if you do get too cold. They crew were excellent and stop the boat when there is something to be seen and give you an excellent commentary. We saw seals, porpoises, gannets and cormorants, but sadly no whales. They do a great tour round the Summer Isles and have a stop at Tanera Mhor for about an hour where the Post Office puts on free coffee and cake for the boat trippers which I thought was excellent of them. Both cakes were gorgeous by the way, but the lemon drizzle one was to die for. We had taken a picnic with us and after getting our coffee and cake sat down at one of the many picnic tables outside the post office in the most glorious sunshine to enjoy our picnic and marvel at the gorgeous views on offer. At present Tanera Mhor is having their roads redone so you are told before you board the boat that you cannot wander around the island as per normal and to restrict yourself to the post office and toilet block. Given that we only had 55 mins on the island and we wanted to have our picnic this was not a problem. But I plan to go back next year and have a bit of a wander. Tanera Mhor is the largest and only one of the Summer Islands that is still inhabited and they are allowed to sell their own postage stamps. They have a surprisingly massive collection of them and I bought a franked set of four for £4.50 which I thought very good value for money. The two woman in the post office could not have been more helpful and friendly and we had a brilliant trip. It cost us £35 each for the three hour trip. Shearwater do a smaller, 1 1/2 hour trip which simply goes up and down Loch Broom and doesn't really include much of the Summer Isles and this costs £25. To be honest the 3 hour trip is far better value for money and well worth it.

We went on a tour with Shearwater cruises yesterday. We were taking my elderly mother in law so I checked in advance that she would manage to get on and off the boat. The team were great, replied to my email swiftly and gave us all the information we needed. Once there my mother in law was treated like an extra special guest, boarded first and assisted all the way by the skipper and crew. It's the little touches that make for a great experience. Thank you for looking after us!!
The tour itself was great, lovely to see the area from the sea. The wildlife was hiding yesterday but getting to see wild animals is always an added bonus, not exactly in the operators control!! We have a lovely day!
(Remember to bring a jumper so you can go outside and fully appreciate the fresh west highland air)

Thus was a great way to spend a day in Ullapool. We lived the island where we had tea and cake. It was very interesting. Dress very warmly because the boat breezes get very cold! This trip was worth the money and time.
