Drove straight passed the hotel as they hadn't bothered to illuminate their sign that night but found it eventually by driving really slowly down the road again. We booked this particular hotel because it had a bar and restaurant we were disappointed to be greeted by a sign telling us that the restaurant was closed. Hey, it's off season so that wasn't the end of the world. They kindly said we could get take out and eat it in the bar so at least we could have dinner. Room was fine, if a bit tired. Bed was comfy but the mattress protector made it very hot. Breakfast was good and it turns out we were the only guests that night so you can understand the restaurant being closed. All in all it was okay. Won't be rushing back but won't be having recurring nightmares about it either.

The lighting on the front of the hotel is fully functioning when the hotel restaurant is open, however due to this time of year being out of season a decision was taken to close same on Sunday evenings which is the reason the only lighting was from the public bar. This issue will be addressed with the member of staff on duty on Sunday evenings to ensure this doesn’t occur again. I would add that the hotel is hard to miss as it has a huge frontage with streetlights rights outside the building.

Re the closed restaurant - the disappointment should have been unwarranted as the guest booked the room via a booking website which clearly states the it isn’t open on Sunday evenings at this time.

The mattress protectors are standard to do as it says in its name – protect the mattress so unfortunately nothing can be done about this issue. Fans are available during the warmer months though not usually requested in September.

We feel the ‘recurring nightmares’ comment is again, unwarranted and feel this review which received 3 out of 5’s and a 4 out of 5 and in my opinion, is a positive sign is then turned into a negative due to its narrative content.

On arrival the first impressions are not too good.... slightly dilapidated and dour looking building in need of a bit of TLC. The rooms are similarly old fashioned, but beds and linen clean and tidy and easily do for a quick night's stay. The bar area smells strange and doesn't serve proper beer, just the usual keg stuff, but the restaurant food was OK and, again, good value for money. If you're on a budget and only after a night's rest this place will fit the bill...

From the minute you park at the front of the hotel, you can feel that you are about to go back to 1904, which is the date the hotel was built. On entering, don't be put off by the rickety reception, or the picture of the stern looking lady as you go up the old winding stairs to your room. Our room was comfortable and airy and I would say that I had the best nights sleep here, than I had at any of the other hotels we stayed at on our Scottish tour, It was probably the least expensive also. The notice in the room about not putting things on, or sitting on, any unused bed is a bit off-putting though.

Our evening meal was very good and we chose from a fairly extensive menu (by small hotel standards) and we had super sized portions, which prevented us progressing to the sweets section of the menu. In the morning, the breakfast followed our expectation of a large and nicely cooked breakfast, which set us up for the day.

There is no town to speak of, and the hotel is a bit isolated and is just a short walk from the railway station, if this is important to you. We only stayed for one night and was very good if you are only passing through, as we were.

Went for a 50th party we had a sit down 3 course meal, we placed our orders a few days before the booking. My partner never ordered soup at the time, he asked if he could have soup and the reply he got in a very abrupt tone "if your name is not on the list we don't have extra, I can show you the list" he got soup in the end, he said "it tasted like soup out off a tin" the chicken was dry and bland! there wasn't enough gravy for the roast beef, someone asked for more gravy and she is still waiting! sorry to say but I won't recommend the ord arms a place for a meal.

There are many inaccuracies in this review as follows:

The food orders were placed the evening before the event even though we requested they be placed at least 2 days before for ordering purposes. We sometimes request a pre-order for large parties in order that diners receive the choices they have ordered and also to help the serving of food run smoothly and without delay.

The diner would never have been told that 'we do not have extra soup' as we always have soup on the menu for guests coming into the restaurant every day. He wasn't sure if he had ordered soup so we checked the list that the booking guest has given to us to refer to. The soup is always freshly made and is advertised as 'homemade'. It would be against the law to advertise it as thus and then serve it 'out of a tin'.

The proprietor ask diners if 'everything was ok' during the main course - as no complaints were made it could only be assumed there wasn't a problem. Staff know how important it is to do this with all our diners as, if there is a problem, it is then that we can address the issue, not 5 days later.

I would hope that those looking at this review come to the conclusion that it is not reflective of other reviews the restaurant have received on Tripadvisor. However, we always take genuine, constructive criticism on board, if indeed that is what this review is, and act accordingly

stayed for one night during Black Isle show this year, double room with shared bathroom. Room comfortable and clean, bathroom very nice, only one problem, when i went for a shower in the evening there was no hot water left so get in early!!
Had an amazing meal in the lounge bar area, food was first class and service was good despite the place being jam packed that night. Portion sizes are massive so be warned but a lovely stay all round!
