As per the rest of the reviews really - lovely cottage and Suzan and Jan are incredibly welcoming and helpful. Took a while to work out the microwave/oven but it does work and we managed to roast a chicken in it! Harris itself is stunning and the little village of northton where grandfathers house is has some stunning beaches a 10 minute walk away.

We have just returned after 4 wonderful days in 'Grandfather's House'. Although it was a last minute booking, we couldn't have received a warmer welcome, rather like discovering long lost friends. The cottage was snug & warm - perfect in March, absolutely everything we needed was to hand. Everything felt fresh and clean and we immediately relaxed. 5 glorious beaches were within walking distance. So much else to see on Harris & Lewis, the best beaches in the British Isles and amazing historical sites to explore. We can't wait to return.

We have been back home for a while and only now are getting around to posting this review. We had the delight of staying in Grandfather’s House in early June. Relaxed, comfortable, well equipped accommodation with welcoming hosts, Suzan and Jan. There was even a homemade soup, lemon tart and bottle of wine to welcome us. Fresh herbs grew just outside our door. The location was great – just across the road from Croft 36 who delivered our Goan fish curry dinners and just up the road from the Temple Café with its good coffee and great view over the saltings and resident sheep. Grandfather’s House was a great base for day trips and drives. Make sure you visit Hebrides Art and try their soup, cake and coffee. Go to St Clement’s Church in Rodel and drive back up the east coast and back via the stunningly beautiful Luskentyre beach views at the roadside parking place in Scarista. This time we even made it to St Kilda when the weather was kind. We really did not want to leave when our week was up. This was our favourite place during our 6.5 weeks in Scotland. Grandfather’s House is on our wish list for a return visit.

We booked the three Beachview cottages this summer for a special family celebration, having stayed in Grandfathers Cottage the summer before and falling in love with Northton and the surrounding beaches. The cottages are all exceptionally comfortable, really well equipped and furnished to the highest standards. The views from Gannet and Fulmar across the bay are amazing. Grandfathers cottage is cosy and romantic and a hidden gem.
Jan and Suzan, the owners, are very welcoming and the perfect hosts, offering advice and sharing their knowledge on the surrounding areas. Special thank you to Suzan for the water colour that she painted of Beach One as a gift for my birthday and the perfect end to our holiday.
Would recommend the Harris Outdoor Centre for sea kayaking, the walk to the eagle hide (we did see golden eagles high up in the glen) and the trip to Saint Kilda.

We did wonder what sort of accommodation our money would buy us for our holiday- its all expensive up there. But oh boy did we pick a winner!
Grandfathers Cottage is one of those Goldilocks places - just right. Small warm inviting very comfortable, very well equipped, tastefully decorated and, well, homely.
We cried when we first arrived and cried on leaving Harris.
Suzan and Jan are lovely, lovely people and fine hosts. They were kind and welcoming, attentive but not overly so, and shared their love for the whole area. Oh and thanks for the fish!

Get it booked - you will not be dissapointed

We stayed here for our honeymoon in June...Suzan left us a beautiful gift and both her and Jan and their Son gave great advice on the island. They leave you a welcome gift of bread and wine to help you through your unpacking!! (well thats what we used it for).
The Grandfathers house is cozy. The fireplace is stunning and warm, a great for relaxing in the evening. You have a large fridge to put all your shopping in and cupboard space. They also have a great amount of crockery and cooking pots for people like us who saved some money to stay in a few evenings...and not forgetting the dishwasher. We never used the washing machine and tumble dryer that was there. On the other hand we did use Croft 36 about four houses down it is amazing for fresh bread rolls and crab (among other things). Temple Cafe is also just down the road (3 min walk if that).
There are many beautiful walks nearby so you won't be disappointed.
If you are into art my new hubby had a lesson from Suzan and he has found her knowledge very helpful.
I really can't rate this cottage enough...I have probably forgotten loads, but if you email Jan and Suzan they are very helpful not because it is a business but because it is in their nature, they know this will be peoples holidays and relaxation so want to make it 100%

A week in May at Gannet Cottage really was the perfect retreat. We don't normally use self catering, preferring hotels, but this is the only way to do Harris in our opinion. Excellent views from the quiet location in Northton, really top-rate equipment in the beautifully appointed property, and a very friendly Dutch welcome too (from the owners who live down the drive). Although Fulmar Cottage is close by the two properties are cleverly sited to avoid being seen from each other. The huge open plan living area with galley kitchen is a great place to chill out, and the main bedroom at the back is cosy with underfloor heating. For my taste, there was too much technology in the bathroom - jacuzzi bath, shower with far too many knobs and dials, and a totally impenetrable sauna cabin - but if you like that sort of thing you're in heaven here. Well equipped kitchen too. Very good entry hall with hard floor and plenty of coat hanging and boot space so you can leave Harris at the door. Highly recommended.
