“Story of true customer service!”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

This is a recently renovated hotel, clean and in a fantastic location. However this proved to be the worst nights stay I have ever had in a hotel, due to a faulty extractor fan!I am posting this review as the action taken by the hotel following my complaints about the stay has been fantastic. They have met our expectations re refunds etc and as a result I would give this hotel another chance.

Having searched Barmouth online for a last minute booking we come across Bae Abermaw and what a lovely hotel. Great views across the bay, great food, staff very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We stayed the one night but wished it was for longer. Would recommend this hotel to anyone, can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Try if possible to book a room with a view because the view is fantastic.

My partner and I recently stayed at this hotel for one night. Rooms were a delight, staff confident and polite... however it was raining heavily when we arrived so we went online in our room and viewed the Bae Abermaw restaurant menu http://www.baeabermaw.co.uk/menu/main%20menu.pdf ...simple enough but substantial so we booked-in (as advised) although as there were only two other people dining there we needn't have bothered. Having decided what we were going to eat previously we ordered a couple of bottles of wine when we were having an aperitif in the bar then went into the dining room where we were handed a VERY different menu. To start with there were no starters listed; 'We don't do starters' we were told... and the mains were breaded frozen scampi (they told us later that it was frozen but it tasted disgusting) and an assortment of tasteless stews; stew with Yorkshire pudding, stews with no Yorkshire pudding etc... we ordered two mains as there were no starters and it was truly disgusting food served with over-cooked chips and a few soggy veg BUT it was also hilarious in an insane way and we began to think we'd stepped straight into a Fawlty Towers episode...

Later we emailed the hotel and told them their rooms were great as were the staff but the food was terrible... the email became an exchange of 'opinions' with the rudest Manager we've ever came across one Jackie Stokes who argued almost every point we made even suggesting that we must have liked the food because we ate it all up (we didn't actually)... eventually we asked for the name of the hotel owner under the advice of Trading Standards and this person is apparently one Remmert Meijer who replied to our complaint about the Manager's bad-manners with a long emailing detailing the problems they had when their chef walked out etc etc...

As said; this was a Fawlty Towers situation but more serious is the fact that the online menu was a fraud, it didn't exist, and as said we had ordered our wine before we realised they were serving third rate food. At one stage this truly appalling manager said they'd give us a refund but couldn't as they didn't have our Credit Card details (presume they haven't heard of cheques).

NEVER again... which is a shame as the views from the hotel are great and the staff were also cheerful and helpful... and if you stay there; don't complain, the Manager will only insult you and the owner will send you a long list of his/her personal woes... a complaint logged with Trading Standards (re the fraudulent menu) is ongoing...

Room Tip: Views from the front (we had room 3) are great

We have already acknowledged that the menu during your stay was not the same as that published online, but may we point out that the website clearly states 'sample menu' and 'subject to change'. We have heard nothing from Trading Standards and do not expect to.

You accused us of using cheap beans at breakfast and serving your breakfast in a soup bowl. The manager responded by informing you that we only use Heinz beans and out of the hundreds of people we have served breakfast to you are the only person to say it was in a soup bowl. This may not have been the response you expected but hardly rude.

We note with interest that you have made similar disparaging remarks about another otherwise well thought of hotel. They have made the same comment that did - that you made no complaint at the time of your visit. Had you done so we would have been only too happy to listen .

Just arrived home after 3 nights stay at the Bae Abermaw. We booked a Sea View room which guests had mentioned on other reviews, we must say it was worth that little bit extra, our room was very spacious, clean and brightly decorated.
Full Welsh breakfast is highly recommended although there is plenty of other choice.
Staff were friendly and welcoming.
The gardens are a perfect place to relax especially the front garden with the lovely sea view.
Barmouth is not far for walkers a beautiful little harbor greets you down there with plenty of shops and restaurants. Bae Abermaw is on a hill so if you have walking difficulties I would recommend to drive into Barmouth town.
Would definitely return again and recommend it to others

We have just returned from an excellent three-night stay. Handy for the town and beaches, the hotel is well situated and the steep approach is well worth the effort when you see the view! Other reviewers have commented adversely on the "blandness" of the decor. We felt, however, that the light and minimalist decor in Room 2 drew the eye to the important feature, the bay window and the panoramic view of the estuary beyond, easily enjoyed from the two small club chairs with coffee table within the bay space. The patio-styole glass doors to the ensuite bathroom were an unusual feature. A curtain could be drawn across the opening when privacy was required, but the rest of the time the bedroom beneffitted from the even more light and seemed very spacious. A lovely room, and very quiet. The only difficulty we had was with the power shower which seemed to have a mind of its own!
The hotel staff were friendly and attentive. The dinner menu was very limited but of good quality, and the fresh fruit available at breakfast was exceptionally varied.
The large crisp table napkins and the huge fluffy bath sheets were indicative of the care being taken to meet the needs of guests.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room if available.

Having read the wonderful reviews we were really looking forward to our two night stay at Bae Abermaw. The hotel is situated up a fairly steep hill but quite accessible by car and we were able to stroll into Barmouth within a few minutes.
On arrival we were given a warm and friendly welcome and shown to our room (Room 8) which was up two flights of stairs. We unfortunately didn't have a sea view room but the view we had was perfectly OK.
The room was spacious and the large bed very comfortable - but very white almost clinical and lacking that bit of warmth and character. The walls, duvet, cushions, curtains, bathroom tiles - in fact everything was white or pale in colour. A contrasting colour on the bed, curtains and cushions would have given the room a more homely feel. The pale carpet did (as a previous reviewer mentioned) have odd stains at the edges and running in lines in places - I feel the quality of the carpet was quite poor. The bathroom was very clean, the shower worked perfectly and a lovely large bath - but again very white lacking any colour at all making it feel cold. The small TV worked perfectly well but the Argos sticker had been left on the front of the TV set (well it had been partly removed so it looked a bit tacky). The tea making facilities were good but the WiFi signal / phone signal was not good - if this is important to you.
It felt like the hotel was not quite "finished" . The stair carpet had not been cleaned and the garden (which has the most fantastic views) was full of weeds on the steps, paths and borders. Simple little things like this would greatly improve this magnificent building with its fabulous panorama view.
Breakfast was good and the waiter and waitress very pleasant. Other staff members were also friendly and welcoming.

Thank you for your comments. The appearance of the rooms is something that I had already been discussing with the housekeeping team. We all agree that more colour is needed and we are introducing this in exactly the way you suggested, cushion covers etc.
We are planning to replace many of the carpets, but we unfortunately cannot commence this until the winter. The hall and stair carpets were cleaned prior to the hotel re-opening but we have had a very busy season and they get a lot of wear and tear, spillages, muddy shoes etc.
We only advertise wi-fi as available in public areas as we are aware that the signal was not good is the bedrooms. But we have just installed a range extender which has improved the reception in many of the rooms. I'm afraid mobile phone signals in Wales are always a problem. Some networks work better than others in different areas. Some areas have no reception at all.
The gardens were in a terrible state when the hotel re-opened as it had previously been closed for 12 months. A lot of work has already been done and we will continue with this.
We hope that we can welcome you back in the future so that you can see the changes for yourself.

Had a really great stay about a month ago. The location is a commanding position overlooking the Mawdach Estuary. From first arrival all the staff were very friendly and efficient in a relaxed way. The owner was very friendly and was happy to chat as well as working in the hotel. The Hotel is clean and bright giving it a fresh look. The rooms are spacious, I stayed with my mother and her room was as big as some flats !. The en suite's were a good size and the shower over the bath was easy to use. Although we did not have sea views the aspect from the public areas were superb. Breakfast was just right, cooked well with a good choice, good service. Did not try restaurant. A good relaxing break in a hotel that deserves to succeed after reopening and should do with such a good and friendly team and lovely building. Not forgetting excellent car park and lovely grounds.
