Reviewed 12 July 2014

We stayed at the Bryn Melyn for 3 nights in July 2014, and had a wonderful time. The setting was very peaceful, with wonderful views over the estuary. Its just a couple of minutes walk into Barmouth, and the views makes the hill worth it! The atmosphere at the B&B is very tranquil, and the owners (David & Heather) make the stay relaxing and enjoyable. They were able to give some great suggestions on some local walks to do from the B&B, and recommended several places to grab some food in Barmouth. Well worth a journey to this area of Wales, and would definitely recommend this B&B.

Room Tip: The rooms are on the B&B website, and I think all but one look out over the estuary.

Thank you for your kind comments. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us and especially pleased that you enjoyed the 'tranquil' atmosphere here. We felt upon moving in that this was a quiet, peaceful place and we have tried to support that atmosphere in everything we have done here since. Bryn Melyn isn't really 'party central' but we do hope that our guests leave feeling relaxed and rested.
We look forward to welcoming you back again, hopefully sometime soon.

We spent five wonderful nights at Bryn Melyn in late June to early July 2014 and can honestly say it is the best guest house we've stayed at anywhere in our 20 years as a couple.

The views are as good as you could possibly ask for, and it's so quiet. We had breakfast every day and, to our regret, only one evening meal, but it was all perfect. The evening meal was a bargain compared to other places that we tried too.

One of the highlights was being able to sit out on the terrace at the front in the evening watching the birds feeding and drinking some magnificent bottled Welsh beer and cider that David and Heather provide. Neither of us ever felt bad the next day either, so there's clearly something magical about the local drink!

We had Room 10 at the top of the house and found it to be just right. Biscuits and bottled water were provided fresh each day, the bed was very comfortable and the shower room clean and tidy with nice toiletries and a powerful shower.

For walkers, there are plenty of guides and maps available in the lounge, and your hosts are more than happy to offer their advice about all the local attractions and routes, too.

Incidentally, if you fancy a look at a lot of the coastline and don't want to drive, we paid just £20.00 (£10 each) for a round trip on the train from Barmouth station to Harlech, then returning all the way down to Machynlleth and back to Barmouth. Going both ways across the estuary on the amazing bridge was a treat.

The access road to the house is very steep and if you walk up it, my tip is to avoid the wide footpath that goes straight up to the house at the first right hand bend. It may be a short cut, but by gum is it a climb. Walking round on the road is much easier.

So there we are. I was tempted to post a one star review to try to put others off because, once you lot discover it, we'll probably struggle to get in again!

Be in no doubt, this place is very special indeed. If David and Heather will have us, we'd love to come back.

Room Tip: If it has a view, it doesn't matter which one you choose as it will be stunning. There's no...

I am very glad you didn't post a one-star review! Be assured that although we often have a high level of occupancy in the season we tend to book up late so if you can book a few weeks in advance you can be mostly assured of a room being available.
We really do appreciate your lovely comments and the positive review and are just thrilled that you found everything to be 'just right'.We'd love to welcome you back any time you feel like exploring the area further and look forward to seeing you again.

An amazing guest house. Beautiful views. Top class rooms, a breakfast to die for and the most charming of hosts. I would thoroughly recommend this place. Absolutely outstanding, with a warm welcome and a comfortably cared for air to it.
I searched carefully for a good guest house and could nt have chosen better. Absolutely outstanding.

Room Tip: Room 7 is amazing. Very comfortable and outstandingly clean

We had a short break in Barmouth to recharge our batteries. Once again Bryn Melyn didn't disappoint. Spotless comfortable rooms. Excellent hosts. Wonderful food and the views are so worth the climb up the hill. We will be back again and again.

We really do enjoy seeing people again and again here at Bryn Melyn. It gives us a chance to get to know them and begin to feel like we have friends in the house. Thank you for your enthusiastic comments although I am afraid I am going to have to disappoint you as I am sure we will continue to make changes here - but only for the better! I guess that's the nature of this business; we see little things that we can improve, or find a way to address something that's been bugging us for a while, and we constantly make those changes to try and keep up with people's expectations.
Hopefully you won't mind if we keep getting better! And we look forward to seeing you again...

I stayed for one night and it was a complete treat. It is up a steep road from Barmouth centre so the views are staggering. I had a big room facing over the estuary, an exceptionally comfortable memory foam bed and at breakfast sat and looked out at yellowhammers and other little birds on the feeders just outside the dining room window. David and Heather are really friendly and helpful and breakfast was just delicious. I'll definitely return.

Room Tip: The double room at the front of the house overlooks the estuary.

It's so nice to read a review that sees the steep road up to Bryn Melyn as an advantage! Seriously though, we are so aware that our location is spectacular and delighted to be able to share it with our guests. I am especially pleased you enjoyed the memory-foam mattress on the bed - we installed these in every room last year and they have proven to be very popular. For the record all our double rooms have views over the estuary, as done one of our twin rooms. Only one room, (the second twin), has woodland views, so you can rest assured if you visit again that you are very likely to be able to enjoy those views again!

My husband and I visited this guest house for a one night stay and had the most relaxing stay. The guest house has the most amazing views and is so peaceful. We stayed in room 6 which was spacious very clean and comfortable with lovely estuary views. The breakfast was plentiful and very tasty - cereals, fruit, yogurts, toast a full welsh breakfast which was so delicious and cooked to perfection. It was also lovely to watch the birds on the patio from the dining area.
We have stayed in Barmouth many times and can honestly say this was the most relaxing nicest stays we have had thanks to this lovely guest house and friendly hosts who are very helpful indeed. The road up is very steep and narrow, but well worth the journey and also plenty of car parking spaces - we will definitely return

Room Tip: Ask for an estuary view, I think most rooms have views

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, despite only staying one night. It is very much appreciated and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay so much. Barmouth is a special place and tends to draw people back again and again to stay but it is a privilege to be able to make your visit extra-special. We hope very much that you will stay with us again when you come and visit next time.

Finding accommodation to meet the needs of our Walking Group can be difficult but at Bryn Melyn we found exactly what we needed!
Firstly - the location - set on the hillside above Barmouth with excellent views of the Estuary and the Sea - perfect!
Secondly - the rooms - spotlessly clean, comfortable beds, excellent showers, tea & coffee making facilities and the wonderful views.
Thirdly - food - a fine start to the day with a good selection of cereals, yoghurts, fruit and a variety of freshly cooked breakfasts to suit all appetites. A three course dinner - with different dishes ever night during our 5 night stay, featuring local ingredients and including vegetarian options. For dinner we were seated as one group around a large table and it felt very much like having dinner at a friends house (you know the friend that is the best cook!).
Last, but by no means least, ours hosts David & Heather. They made our stay very special, always on hand when needed to give advise on walking, on Barmouth and the surrounding area, on the birds that visit the Bird Tables just outside the Dining Room windows and on numerous other matters.
The whole combination resulted in us having a relaxing and enjoyable visit to a beautiful part of the world.

This is only the second year that we have had the pleasure of a walking group staying with us for an extended period of time but we certainly hope we shall see more in the future. There is a particularly good 'buzz' about the house when we have a group in who all know each other. I am particularly pleased that you enjoyed the evening meals. We try hard to come up with a varied set of menus so that you don't get any repeats during your stay, and thank you for the comments about dinner being like eating at a friend's house. I guess that's exactly the sort of atmosphere we hope to generate.
Obviously groups like to ring the changes and walk in different areas but if you ever feel like coming back to this part of Wales you'd be very welcome indeed - and there are plenty of walks yet to be explored!
