I'm a sucker for a hotel with character and a story to tell. This is a faux castle built in 1892 by the gunsmith WWGreener. The current owners are rightly proud of the building. It commands a spectacular view out to sea, although I'm sure Mr Greener would have had something to say about the brutal housing estate which blights the vista.
Can't fault the attitude of the staff. Friendly, efficient and attentive. Hats off to them!
Not sure about the dress code for dinner ('smart casual'). Seems a bit high and mighty, but that is their prerogative.
Plenty of decent fish'n'chip shops in Barmouth.......

Hello Mr W,

Thanks for your comments, especially regarding the staff, which are appreciated.

Unfortunately, we can do little about the housing, but as this is the home of the major part of the Barmouth population, there would probably be no town without it!

Our dress code is purely to imply that, unlike a beachfront cafe, we would not want people to be wearing beachwear etc. In respect of the view, we offer a unique dining experience to both residents and non-residents alike, and with most of our residents being more discerning, we endeavour to create the right ambience for a relaxing and pleasant evening.

Apropos your final note, we do get many locals coming to Barney's for our fish and chips!

Just had a two night stay. The facilities and service were first class from arrival to check out.
I would highly recommend going for room four if it is available as the view from the balcony is out of this world. Also, if it's a warm night, then keep the balcony doors open and fall asleep to the sound of the sea.

Room Tip: Room 4 for the balcony.

Hello andyhill101,

Many thanks for your scores and remarks. We appreciate ALL feedback, and it's always good to know that we have succeeded in our aim of a friendly welcome and good service.

As you rightly say, the views are superb, and are the reason the house was originally built in 1892. You also had the added bonus of the lovely weather, allowing you to appreciate the relaxing ambience of the sea.

Hopefully you'll be back to see us again in the future.

Kind regards

What a great place, yes rooms maybe a little small for some but we would go back anytime. Views are something else to be seen. Not that much to see in Barmouth but venture out just a little there's plenty.

Room Tip: Just watch the sunset and if a photographer be ready !!

Hi Graham,
Thank you for your kind comments, and we're pleased to see you would come back to us. Coming from one who himself lives in such a beautiful part of the world, it's lovely to see that you appreciated our wonderful countryside, and the views afforded in the surrounding areas. The sunsets are probably the one thing most photographed by our visitors!

Hello Bintylala

We're delighted to read that your first romantic getaway was at Ty'r Graig. The romantic origins of the house are still relevant today; Mrs Greener loved the view so her husband built the house for her!

Thank you for the kind comments about the food and staff, and also your recommendation. There is so much to do in the area that we hope you will come back and see us again!

The views alone are worth the £89 a night however everything else other than the reception is dated and tired!!!!
The room I stayed in was cramped and the bathroom was a complete none starter "compact" at best.
The breakfast was of a good standard and the staff were excellent and very much a credit to the hotel.
Ive tried to post several times on trip advisor however for some reason my review has been blocked, why is this?????

Hello Desertstorm2013,

We’re pleased to note that you appreciate the views, and also the standards of our breakfast and staff. However, we are slightly confused at some of your other comments.

The reception area is probably one of the LEAST changed parts of the building, with its original wood panelling, Minton floor, and stained glass dating from 1892. We do advertise that some of the en-suite facilities are small; this is inevitable when catering for the demands of the 21st century traveller in what was a 19th century private house.

Regarding your difficulty to post, this is purely in the hands of Tripadvisor. We have no control over what's posted.

I found this little treasure on the Internet and fell in love with it. We stayed only one night (which wasn't enough) as part of our week in England and Wales, and enjoyed everything about it. The rooms were so warm and comfortable, the views were just beautiful, the breakfast was good. It just puts a smile on my face thinking about it. Enjoy.

My wife and I stayed two nights at this beautiful place, It was quiet, peaceful and steeped in history. Many of the original features are still in place and one gets the feeling of being transported back to the 1890s..and they even have a copy of the original plans for the house framed on a wall at reception....wonderful. The hotel's position is spectacular and and the staff and management were really friendly and helpful..we were looked after very well. We had one of the 'turret rooms' and it was really nice...perfectly circular and great views!!

The room was light, airy and comfortable and the food was was very good. The whole place was clean and tidy. Would stay at this lovely place again.!! Big thanks to Steve (manager) for being so friendly and helpful. Chris & Sonia Jones, Holyhead.
