I was a bit apprehensive about going to this hotel as Warner's hotels have a reputation for being aimed at the older client and to a certain extent it was - however, it was actually rather nice to be considered one of the youngsters! The check in was faultless (even asking if we needed help with our bags - which we didn't but it was nice for those less able). The room was large with everything we could possibly wish for - the radiators were adjustable so you could have it as warm as you wanted. The food was excellent - really couldn't fault it and the ice cream was to die for - Turkish Delight and salted caramel to name two. I thought the portions might be small but they were just right without making me feel bloated. The wine was decent and not over-priced - I thought as we were a captive market they might have hiked the prices up.....also as it is a national company I presume these prices are the same in the South as Wales and the North.
We actually went to see Ken Dodd which is why we chose this particular weekend but we had 2 nights when we were entertained by the Bodelwyddan Castle Hotel entertainment crew - it was kind of like being on a cruise on dry land. If you like that kind of entertainment then it is fine - lots of "proper dancing", quizzes and cabaret type shows. Not really my cup of tea and the amplification was aimed at the deaf (although my brother-in-law is deaf and he was holding his ears!) but it was professional and well executed.
As the weather was gorgeous we got out and about into the beautiful countryside but I did find time for a sauna and swim - hardly anyone in there - perhaps it was a little to cold for all but the stalwart swimmer.....you didn't really want to hang about in there. Had the weather been awful there would have been enough to keep us all occupied.
Would I go again? Surprisingly...a resounding yes. It was more expensive than I would normally go for as I tend to source deals through the internet but as a family break with my old Mum it would be fabulous. If you do go try the less intrusive entertainment in the Ewys Hall with Fletch, the Getting to Grips with Grapes with Keith and make sure you visit the real Bodalwyddan Castle (you are in an annexe in the grounds of a proper historic house that people pay to go in and you get it FREE!) and also St Margaret's Marble Church just down the road.
