“Enjoyable two day aniversary break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2014

Rooms, setting and food were excellent.Staff were friendly and efficient.
I did feel that we had arrived at "Gods waiting room"but it really didnt detract from the lovely setting and a most enjoyable stay.
The whole experience I would describe as being " the whole being greater than the sum of its parts" The three bars didnt really make for a nice evening although they were well serviced and clean.Just seemed to lack atmosphere. The animation/entertainment team worked hard and made for a good evening, although catering to the majority clientele (70+) it was a little like being spoken to by a "Blue Peter" presenter.. The entertainment area was at best utilitarian with bare tables and hard chairs. Not even a beer mat or napkin with the drinks.
Our visit coincided with some of the best weather during the last three months,so the gardens and woodland walks came into there own.
All in all very enjoyable and we would certainly consider another visit. The rooms ,staff attitude and food was well worth the price paid. Recommended.

Room Tip: A quiet area room with view of gardens is well worth the small excess charged..

We are experienced Warner guests and the main reason we booked this weekend was to see Ken Dodd in the autumn of his career.
Most Warner reviews mention the age group of their clientele and there is no getting away from the fact that many of the guests are as old as Ken Dodd.
Ken was very funny. 'Tears of laughter rolling down the cheeks' kind of funny. Although he forgot some of his lines, at 86 he is entitled to do so and he made a joke of it by using his band as a prompt and he is so much better than the modern alternative comedians.
The rooms (512 and 513) were very good, clean and warm with plenty of space, drink making tray and full facilities.
The dining room often gets criticised because of the nature of the service but we like it.
There is always a buffet carvery but if you don't like that you can have full waiter service for all 3 courses if you prefer.
We were put off by the fact they have introduced a charge for coffee at the table after dinner which is penny pinching.
The showtime evenings are what sets Warners apart from other Hotels and the star turn is always on the Saturday night. On Friday they had Lisa Jane Kelsey who is a musicals and opera singer turning her hand to cabaret. Very good. The resident entertainment crew cover Sunday night and all the spaces in between. They are not West End standard but they are still good. The only weak entertainer was the MC who is transferring to Alvaston this week and the less said about him the better.
There is always the quiz and dancing class part of the programme but we treat that as an option. Warners claim that they want to move towards a younger market but frankly this part of their offering will only drive away any youngsters who arrive unaware.
The hotel is billed as a castle but this is an overstatement. It is a hall with castellations and a stately home/museum attached which also has castellations. Don't expect to stay in a castle.
The staff were mostly friendly and helpful but our waiter for Sunday dinner was out of his depth and I concluded that he was probably a temp.
The MC claimed that Bodelwyddan had won the 'Warner of the year' award for 2013 but all 4 of us wondered how, because Warners have better venues than this one.
Lastly it's worth mentioning that Warners are still offering discounts of up to 50% and this made this weekend away a real bargain.
Anybody seeking 5 star luxury won't find it here.

Room Tip: Check in early and negotiate.

From the moment of arrival we felt very welcomed by the staff who continued to look after us throughout our stay. All of our enquiries and requests were well attended to and everything we asked for was delivered. Every member of the staff from reception, housekeeping, chef, waitress, entertainment team, bar staff, facilities and general admin were on hand to help us with all our needs. Whoever we asked for assistance and information either gave us the response we wanted or found the appropriate person to deal with our request. The team at this hotel made our stay one to remember.

The hotel and it's grounds are a joy to explore. The views are breathtaking and the woodland walks are a great way of relaxing.

The food and accommodation were exceptional, especially for a three star hotel.

The entertainment during our stay was most enjoyable. Simon the entertainment manager has done a superb job putting a team together that works really hard to entertain their guests. Fletch was a fun act to watch and join in with in the upstairs bar once the main entertainment was finished.

All the organised activities were both fun and informative. Peter Newton, the Tai Chi instructor is a world master and is very knowledgable. We learnt some great tips and techniques from him. The guided walk and tour of the castle and the grounds was very enjoyable. The history of the castle and its surrounding area is most interesting, with a few good ghost stories thrown in.

As always nothing is perfect. Due to the popularity of the venue and full bookings car parking can sometimes be a problem for a few guests, and the dining area can be a bit congested at times. We are sure these will be dealt with in due course. We understand there are plans already in place to develop the hotel and it's facilities in the near future which will only add to the attraction and enjoyment of its guests.

We have just booked a further hotel break at this hotel for later in the year and very much look forward to another enjoyable and restful time here.

Room Tip: Advise the staff of your requirements so that they can do their best to satisfy them.

I was a bit apprehensive about going to this hotel as Warner's hotels have a reputation for being aimed at the older client and to a certain extent it was - however, it was actually rather nice to be considered one of the youngsters! The check in was faultless (even asking if we needed help with our bags - which we didn't but it was nice for those less able). The room was large with everything we could possibly wish for - the radiators were adjustable so you could have it as warm as you wanted. The food was excellent - really couldn't fault it and the ice cream was to die for - Turkish Delight and salted caramel to name two. I thought the portions might be small but they were just right without making me feel bloated. The wine was decent and not over-priced - I thought as we were a captive market they might have hiked the prices up.....also as it is a national company I presume these prices are the same in the South as Wales and the North.

We actually went to see Ken Dodd which is why we chose this particular weekend but we had 2 nights when we were entertained by the Bodelwyddan Castle Hotel entertainment crew - it was kind of like being on a cruise on dry land. If you like that kind of entertainment then it is fine - lots of "proper dancing", quizzes and cabaret type shows. Not really my cup of tea and the amplification was aimed at the deaf (although my brother-in-law is deaf and he was holding his ears!) but it was professional and well executed.

As the weather was gorgeous we got out and about into the beautiful countryside but I did find time for a sauna and swim - hardly anyone in there - perhaps it was a little to cold for all but the stalwart swimmer.....you didn't really want to hang about in there. Had the weather been awful there would have been enough to keep us all occupied.

Would I go again? Surprisingly...a resounding yes. It was more expensive than I would normally go for as I tend to source deals through the internet but as a family break with my old Mum it would be fabulous. If you do go try the less intrusive entertainment in the Ewys Hall with Fletch, the Getting to Grips with Grapes with Keith and make sure you visit the real Bodalwyddan Castle (you are in an annexe in the grounds of a proper historic house that people pay to go in and you get it FREE!) and also St Margaret's Marble Church just down the road.

Room Tip: You get no choice really but ensure all your party are in the same building as it makes it easier to...

We have never stayed at such a wonderful place as this before, Every member of staff, what ever they did, was very friendly, polite, and couldn't do enough for us. The accommodation was superb, the dining room was fantastic and the food was amazing. The grounds, and I walked through them every morning for about 30 min before breakfast were immaculate, the woods are well cared for and there wasn't a weed in site in any of planted areas. No sign of any rubbish, just total perfection in every way. The evenings entertainment by the resident dancers etc was fantastic. We got yo know a few of the dancers, and they were all delightful, and as for Ken Dodd on the Saturday night - well he was fantastic, my wife even being given a 'tickling stick' by Ken himself. We were so delighted with our stay that we have booked to go there again. Best weekend ever at a Warners.

Room Tip: It is worth paying a bit extra for a 'signature' room which gave us a patio, two chairs and...

Stayed here recently with my in laws. 4th time we have been at a Warner's Hotel. We were not let down. The grounds and castle are superb. All staff very helpful. We had a ground floor signature room which was very comfortable,we had a Patio which would have been nice in the Summer, but still to cold and wet to try out.
Food was very good, however the dining are is a little cramped if Warner's could sort that out then this would be excellent. Our only complaint was it seemed we were on top of each other with other guests (shoulder to shoulder) also dodging waiters and guest as you went back and forth to the Carvery.Service was sometimes indifferent depending on how busy they all were
Whilst there we played Table Tennis, Snooker and Indoor Bowls,(also outside crown green) I used the pool, gym, sauna and steam room. There are also lots of other activities that anyone can try.
Entertainment was good especially Memphis Belle Orchestra and the entertainment team came a second best on the last night with their tribute to the sounds of the 50's.

Keep up the good work team, just try and sort the dining area out to reach top marks.

Room Tip: Signature for us everytime

As a first timer we did not know what to expect but first impressions were good.Check in was easy but as our room wasn't ready we were invited to leave our cases and they would be taken to our room whilst we looked around. The grounds were well looked after and every thing was close bye.
When we went to our room we found it very clean & pleasant.the bed was HUGE & very comfortable and we were lucky enough to have a patio, which would be lovely in the summer. As it was it was convenient for my husband who is a smoker. The bathroom was large and well equipped, although the cheep, thin toilet paper was a let down.
The dining room was light, airy & modern and the food was tasty and plentiful, nothing was too much trouble for the waiting on staff and Linda with help from Kate were wonderful ladies and very helpful. If you get a chance try the chocolate, apple &beatroote pudding,it was sublime.
We were disappointed with the entertainment lounge which was quite soulless and not very comfortable. Not having been on a Warner's break before we did not know the emphasis that was put on dancing,as we are not dancers we found this very boring and would have enjoyed a nice comfortable bar to relax in.
We very much enjoyed the Memphis Bell big band which was our reason for going. There was a mix up with our prebooked table but it was dealt with quickly and generously, and saved us from being upset.
All of the staff were very good and were a great credit to the hotel. All of the activities we tried were fun, especially the archery.
If you fancied a change the village pub was a short drive or walk away and a Spar shop was close bye too if you wanted any thing.
The parking close to the hotel, especially for disabled guests was not sufficient for the guests and made it difficult if you went out as you new you would have a problem parking when you got back. There was parking further down by the entrance but as you had to climb the hill up to the hotel it was not convenient for guests with mobility problems,as many guests had.
All in all we enjoyed our stay but would hesitate to return for more than a night or two due to the abundance of dance and lack of a comfortable bar to retire to in the evening.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems ask for a room close to reception.
