“Back to enjoy the Valentines party”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

We with returned,to enjoy a second Valentines disco night. The hotel was pretty full ,with a 60th party also going on,the experienced management coped admirably.great.
Our meal was a delight, especially the Welsh cutlets served with cleverly presented veg.Standards for breakfast being equally maintained.
Always reassuring to see familiar faces around, including the owners.
All this on a " special " too
As an aside we visited the Élan Valley lakes later where the dams were being overtopped following the rains. Spectacular .

Dear Mr and Mrs Bardwell,

Delighted that we were able to welcome you back to the hotel again and to read that you enjoyed your stay. As a management team we have had something of a chuckle about your 'experienced' comments, reflecting that experience is fast becoming a euphemism for old.... I've been here 26 years now and Robert, Sam and David, 2 of whom are older than me have all been here over 10 years. Hopefully we know what we are doing!

I was up at the Elan Valley visiting a farmer yesterday below the Claerwen Reservoir and the water was flowing over the dam. It look spectacular.

I look forward to welcoming you back to The Metropole.

Kind regards

Having booked in for the Valentines Saturday night package for 5 course meal, disco, room and breakfast and use of the Spa facilities we were given a very warm welcome. Check in was efficient by friendly staff. We were allocated room 322, and found that this was next to the lift. From previous comments on trip advisor, it had been recommended not to have a room next to the lift. We went back to reception where Lorna was particularly helpful in reallocating a fabulous room 135 which was far superior and quieter.
We used the pool facilities with sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi and the staff in the Spa were very friendly and helpful too.
The evening meal had various sitting times to suit all and there were numerous staff in the restaurant who were very attentive. The food choices catered for all with exceptional quality and taste. The tables were beautifully set with adequate space between them all for couples to enjoy chatting and the ambience was suitably created.
The disco was held in a separate room which apart from being very hot, was a lovely intimate setting. The DJ provided a range of music catering for requests but unfortunately cleared the dance floor on a number of occasions.
Breakfast the next morning was in a Buffet format, with lots of choice and everything being piping hot , again the staff were very attentive. Having attended this function last year which was good, this weekend was far superior
Overall a very enjoyable weekend at a lovely venue. The Metropole is a Grand Setting and can only be recommended for a return visit.

Room Tip: Room 135 is particularly spacious

Dear Kentdee

Thank you for your kind feedback following your stay for the Valentines weekend. It is always pleasing to read good feedback from guests who have stayed with us before. It means we must be doing something right.

It seems that the staff excelled themselves during your stay and I know they will be delighted to read your praise.

I hope we shall see you in 2015 if not before.

We were a party of 4 couples staying for my mum's 70th birthday. Let me make it clear from the beginning that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are happy to go back. The rooms were fine with everything you needed in them and the hotel is old but interesting. We checked in at 1ish even though it is from 4 and the rooms were ready so they let us go straight up. The receptionist said that if your room isn't ready then they would secure your bags for you while you used the facilities. Having said that, there are a few things I think could be improved. It was a very unusual stay as we were there on a day of atrocious weather and the hotel lost electricity twice. I have no complaint about this as it was out of the management's hands. We had booked and prepaid for afternoon tea at 2:30, which is exactly when the power came back on the first time. We then understood the delay in getting our afternoon tea (although an hour and a quarter was a bit long with no apologies for wait from staff) but we were quite disappointed when it arrived. It bore no resemblance to the description. We weren't offered a choice of teas but had to ask, the 'finger' sandwiches were cut into triangles and we only had a choice of smoked salmon on granary or chunks of cucumber on white and the patisserie selection was massive slabs of very ordinary cake. Also, the clotted cream on the scones was just whipped cream. It was plentiful though. As we had waited so long and wanted to use the spa facilities before lunch, we didn't make a fuss and ate it. The spa is small and we didn't get to use the jacuzzi because a very inconsiderate group of women hogged it the whole time we were in there. The pool is good though and one of our group thoroughly enjoyed the hot stone massage she had. Unfortunately, the power went off again at 6:30 and remained off until about 8:30. So, our gourmet 6 course dinner became soup and sandwiches. The staff then made the very best they could of a very unfortunate situation and the soup was delicious. The management of the food situation, however, wasn't very good. There didn't seem to be a coordinated effort in the kitchen so some tables had food that others didn't ie, lemon meringue pie or ham and beef sandwiches which we wanted but had run out before they got to us. I know the kitchen were having to do the best they could but our table ended up feeling somewhat neglected. Breakfast was well cooked, tasty and plentiful. The staff are courteous and smart. The hotel have since more than compensated for the inconvenience caused by the weather and I am very happy to recommend this hotel.

Dear Kerry, It was an extremely difficult weekend for the staff and thank you for your patience and understanding.

I can honestly say that in the 26 years I have been at the hotel we have never had a power cut on the scale experienced during your stay. We have learnt a lot of lessons from the experience and now have a standard of operations in the event of such an occurrence in the future.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel.

visited this hotel recently during dreadful weather and feel check in at 4-00pm is somewhat late we would have arrived earlier and spent money in the hotel, but object to being charged for an earlier check in. the staff were absolutely superb most welcoming and the dinner at night truly a joy. breakfast unfortunately did not live up to dinner - very ordinary and extra charges for many items. also early check out 11-00 am again had it been the usual noon check out we would have stayed and had a bite of lunch. spotlessly clean and a very 'different' hotel. lots of people were visiting to celebrate birthdays but no effort was made to make the visit special.

Dear Atthy

I am delighted that you enjoyed your say at the Metropole and take on board the comments you raise about check in and out.

The difficulty is that my staff have to find a balance between people leaving and people arriving. It does take time to service bedrooms and therefore a reasonable time has to be allowed. Should people require an early check in this requires administration and management to act, and this justifies a charge. We do rarely actually make a charge and do allow guests to make use of the Hotel facilities while waiting for their room to be serviced. Only on very busy days would anybody wait beyond 3pm for the bedroom to be available.

I think that the price you were charged of £99 to include 6 course taster dinner, a glass of Champagne, bed and Full Welsh Breakfast is very good value. A small number of breakfast specials such as Haddock, Kippers and Smoked Salmon do have small additional justifiable charges.

I am pleased that the staff were welcoming and hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to The Metropole.

We also took advantage of the Travel Zoo Deal of £99 for dinner, bed & breakfast and I can honestly say we were delighted!

Upon arrival we drove past the front of the hotel looking out for a parking sign for hotel guests but we didn't see one, but we just thought let's make our way around to the rear of the hotel as it could be there, and as suspected there was a huge car park - easy.

As we went into the hotel we were met by buckets on the floor catching rain water coming through the ceiling, which I initially thought - oh dear! The decor is a little dated in parts of the hotel, but this didn't detract very much to the overall feel of the hotel. We easy checked in with the very pleasant reception staff, despite arriving early but this then meant we took our bags to the room and managed to get a late lunch in the bar. The food was lovely and we sat in the lean to part of the front of the hotel. I could of sat there all afternoon watching the world go by, it was nice.

Our room was lovely (121), the bed was very comfy and huge! We used the spa facilities too, and hubby used the gym which he said was great. What made our stay was the food, it truly is first class and delicious. To be honest I couldn't believe the service we received, and the quality of the food we had, both for the evening meal (6 course taster menu) which included a glass of champagne each which was a lovely added touch, as it was my birthday so made our meal feel very romantic. The breakfast again was first class. One thing which I thought was lovely is that staff waited on you in the dining room, and in 'deals' with other hotels you have to get your own from the buffet line!

We only live an hour away and certainly plan to visit again soon. We really enjoyed. You don't get this type of friendly service in many places. A true credit.

Don't really understand the negative 'faded glory' comments I've read about this place. It is a lovely individual hotel, far removed from the horrible, corporate places that seem the norm now - however much you pay. The big surprise for us was the quality of the tasting menu we had. Just faultless. Six of us including one chef and nothing but praise from everyone. A really good experience.

Dear jft678

Thank you for your very kind feedback following your stay at The Metropole. I don't really worry to much about the 'faded glory' comments. I could write a novel on the ups and downs of the hotel in the 118 years my family have owned it so have learnt to take most comments with a pinch of salt.

Delighted that you could see the real qualities of this grand old hotel and hope we shall be welcoming you back soon.

My friend and I took advantage of the Travel Zoo offer for £99. What a bargain.
The hotel is lovely. Although old the decor throughout is warm and homely. I understand the bathrooms are gradually being updated. Our room 333 still had the old bathroom, this was not a problem, it was spotlessly clean and Our room was lovely.
The six course taster menu was perfect, absolutely delicious. The full welsh breakfast was superb.
The staff were all very helpful and friendly, the restaurant staff seemed to work particularly hard.
We didn't get a chance to use the spar facilities, but have every intention of doing so on our return in April to celebrate my friends birthday.
