“Lovely little cottage in beautiful surroundings.”
Reviewed 31 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

My husband and I, with my teenage son stayed at Buzzard cottage. It is a small cottage ideal for three people, or a family with two younger children. The cottage is set in extensive gardens, which were delightful to explore and there were walks from the door in beautiful countryside.
Lots of things are provided in the cottage, such as tea, coffee etc. The owners were really helpful and friendly.
It wasn't a problem for us, but people need to be aware that it is not possible to drive right up to the cottage as it is situated in the gardens behind the owners house.
The local area is perfect for walkers and mountain bikers.

“I cannot tolerate WiFi - We will not return to Cwm IrfonLodge”

We have been regular visitors to Buzzard Cottage for 4-5 years..We did enjoy the gardens, the peaceful environment, the location, the friendliness of the owners
Iwould have rated it as very good , until now

BUT , The Management decision to install WiFi in A LL the cottages is the reason why we will NOT be returning.

We neither want nor need WiFi or mobile phones. These make me unwell The microwave high frequency pulsed radiation gives me horrendous intolerable headaches and prickling skin
I cannot stop in ANY accommodation with WiFi.

The decision of the Management to install the WiFi in in the cottages means that I can no longer stop at this accommodation. It is now a no- go area
The decision to install the WiFi will also have repercussions for other guests with similar health problems caused by WiFi .

The location is no longer accessible to ME,as a result of the management decision.
I cannot therefore any longer recommend it to others.

I am not quite sure where you get your information from but, as it happens, the cottages do not yet have access to Wi Fi. We do hope to install Wi Fi in the near future but as some of our guests are electro magnetically sensitive we have decided to make it possible to switch it off at source when requested. We appreciate that a wide variety of people wish to enjoy the tranquility and wildlife here at Cwm Irfon and for this reason would not impose Wi Fi on our guests.

“A delightful retreat, fantastic value, a wonderful holiday”

We selected Buzzard cottage purely on price and availability, the pictures on the website gave the appearance of a small but cosy cottage, we were concerned that we would all be on top of each other but, heck, it would be better than a tent.

On arrival we saw the sign and a closed gate and assumed there was another entrance and drove past. Only to turn around and come back to the gate feeling a little foolish, so many people don't use gates we were forgetting that these cottages encourage people to bring their pets and the gate is closed for the safety of the dogs.

We drove up the drive to the large lodge where the owners lived and rang the door to collect the key, there was no need really because they had left the key in the cottage for us.

The cottages are all snuggled into the hillside, tucked away in a well established garden full of flowers and lawn, lichen covered trees surround the properties, stone patio areas and walls complete the picture - a rural retreat.

The cottage itself was a surprise.

Through the front door there is a hallway with plenty of room for shoes, coats and boots. Off the hall is a door to an airing cupboard with a Vax vacuum cleaner, first aid kit and a little bit of space for drying.

The bathroom is spacious white furniture gives a nice clean appearance and a practical tiled floor was handy with careless children. The bath has a shower/tap combo, it did lack a shower curtain and tiling for a full stand up shower but endless hot water meant all four of us could bathe and shower off. (The hot water was properly hot)

The smaller bedroom was much bigger than the pictures indicated. There was a main bed with one tucked under. The bed underneath had solid wooden legs that once pulled out created two beds the same height. We set the room up like a twin bedded room for our children (aged 11 and 14). In the room there is a built in wardrobe with shelving. With the bedroom set up this way there was still ample space to walk between the beds to the rear stable style door which led out to the patio. Many evenings were sat out here overlooking the garden and mountains. Comfortable patio furniture was a blessing and aided relaxing with a book and a glass of something while the children ran around the garden and woods exploring.

The main bedroom had plenty of space with a big comfortable bed, again a built in wardrobe and bedside cabinets provided plenty of space for clothing. In each room there are plenty of windows for fresh air and ventilation, and very effective radiators - although in summer we found had a few wet days and needed to dry the towels properly and popped the heating on we're impressed at how effective it was.

The lounge kitchen area was also bigger than expected, a lack of photos meant that we were not really sure what we would find. There is certainly more space and equipment than you find in an overseas apartment. The kitchen consists of single level open units with a main work surface through the room like a bar. When on holiday we like to cook and this area is important and provided us with all we needed. Equipment wise we found everything you would expect. There is a standard under the unit fridge, a small freezer which sits on the work surface, a microwave, kettle, toaster and a gas oven with hobs.

In the room there is a dining table and four chairs, the lounging area has a sofa and a couple of wicker chairs can be added to the room if all wanted to watch the TV.

Summary
Excellent value, friendly and helpful hosts, brilliant atmosphere, comfortable beds, delightful location, every note in the log book was positive with a large number of people returning which says it all.

Thinks that we're not quite right.
Not everything is perfect, this is the same with most houses, nothing here should stop anyone coming for a holiday.
I would have preferred proper shower facilities.
The oven is gas and the electronic igniter didn't work (a minor thing) in the oven there was only a single shelf and a small oven pan, this made things tricky.
The lounge/diner sits at the back of the property and was a little dark and we found we had the lights on a lot - it could do with a proper old fashioned bulb in the main light rather than an energy saver.
The sofa is tired and needed daily plumping up.
We brought our bikes along, there is a garage to store them in but it is not locked. I felt uneasy with thousands of pounds worth of bikes left in an unsecured garage. A simple combination padlock is needed for the garage door.
WiFi is not available in the cottages, in this modern world where we use devices for maps and gathering information it should be.

The area

This is an escape from everything, forget big supermarkets, instead there are sensibly priced local stores and butchers. This is cycling country and fantastic for walking.

Julian, Thank you for your comprehensive review!

You will be pleased to hear that we are currently installing wiFi for all of the cottages. We also now have a combination lock for the garage for the safe storage of bikes - although we live in the most crime free area in the UK! And we have put some more gas in the gas igniter for the oven!

We hope to see you again some time!

Best wishes Cwm Irfon Lodge Cottages

“If you want a relaxing, away from it all break then look no further!!”
Reviewed 31 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

As a family with 2 teenagers, an 11 year old and an energetic dog we needed to find somewhere to suit us all......not an easy task!!! Then we found Nuthatch cottage....it ticked all the boxes ( and more )and was a really good price too. Lovely, stunning location, comfy cottage and friendly owners. The gardens were the perfect place to relax amongst the trees and flowers with lots of different birds for company.....plenty of photo opportunities. We were lucky to be there the weekend of the meteor showers and with the clear night skies were treated to a beautiful display of meteors and shooting stars. Lots of places for the children to explore within the garden including the 'swing of death'...try if you dare!! Lots of places to visit including castles, walks, and RSPB reserve all within easy driving distance. If you want to go further afield then the coast of Cardigan bay is about an hour and a half driving on quiet roads. Nice places to eat out in the town 3 miles away or why not have a meal cooked by Karin and Gyles and eat in their dining room....you won't be disappointed. All in all a lovely place to 'holiday' and voted by all the family (and the dog! ) as a place we would definitely love to return to.
