“A fantastic getaway!”
Reviewed 19 January 2012

I stayed at Trallwm with my girlfriend in Magpie cottage for 3 nights in January 2012. We arrived to a very clean, characterful cottage in the heart of a beautiful, picturesque forest. This was exactly what we were looking for - peace and quiet and some time away from the hustle and bustle! I had ordered the local breakfast hamper which contained everything you'd need including some lovely homemade bread. We met the owner Mary on our first afternoon and were made to feel very welcome. The walks around the surrounding hills were fantastic, and whilst there aren't shops for miles, it was nice to have the on site cafe to grab a cheeky toastie for a lunchtime refuel!

All together Trallwm was exactly what we were looking for - space and tranquility in a beautiful setting. We will definitely be returning.

We have just returned home from a 4 night stay at Trallwm Forest Cottages and we stayed in 'Kestrel', which is a semi-detached cottage.

We had pre-ordered the breakfast hamper, which was waiting for us on our arrival and had several breakfasts from this hamper....I would highly recommend it.

The cottage is cozy....not overly luxurious but it had everything we needed for our stay. Bed was comfy and there is plenty of heating for the cold months and a good supply of logs for the wood-burning stove. Everything was clean and linen/towels were fresh. Lying in bed at night gazing at the stars through the skylight was a particular treat!

Mary greeted us on the morning after our arrival to make sure we had settled in ok. I really can't understand why a previous reviewer had negative feedback on Mary, we found her to be very polite and friendly.

Walks: We did the blue and black trails, which were actually mountain bike trails but fine for walking. The black trail took us through gorgeous forest to the top of a hill with fantastic 360 views.

Things to watch out for: There is no mobile signal. If you are tall, you need to watch out for the low beams in the bathroom and bedrooms. You really are off the beaten track, so stock up with supplies unless you are happy to drive the 4 miles into the nearest village to go shopping. Take some extra firelighters with you for the wood-burning stove if you are going to be there for more than 2 or 3 nights.

We fully understood that we would be in the middle of a working forest and expected some disruption but there was none. We had peace, quiet and tranquility for the whole of our stay.

If you want to get away from it all in a beautiful setting, come to Trallwm Forest Cottages.
We'll definitely be back.

We first discovered Trallwm Forest Cottages 3 yrs ago and we are about to visit for our 3rd time as we really enjoy the beautiful setting these cottages have to offer. Our first stay was in the Siskin, although I would say the cottages are quite basic they have everything you need for an enjoyable stay. Our second was in the Magpie again a really lovely location next to a stream. We will be staying in the Tawny Owl in November and know this will be just as good as the other cottages we have stayed in. I think the important thing to remember about these cottages is not only the stunning scenery, the peace and quiet they offer but also the price, they are very reasonable compared with other cottages in forest locations. We would highly recommend a stay at Trallwm Forest Cottages.

Having read one of the reviews on here I was a bit worried as we had already booked 'Tawny Owl' for a week - however we found it to be perfect! We were aware this was a working woodland so expected some disruption - but during the whole week we actually saw one land rover go past! Apart from that (and two people on mountain bikes) we didn't see another soul – it was perfect isolation and peace.
There is no TV reception - a real blessing we didn’t miss it at all. The children actually played outside and made camps in the woods, we walked miles, the area is outstandingly beautiful. The mountain roads compare with the lake district – but with no people!! We drove the Devils Staircase and took the mountain road to Aberystwyth – highly recommended.
I already miss my morning coffee outside, overlooking the forest and the mountains from the cottage in perfect isolation with only the birds for company. If you want to get away from it all and find some peace and solitude – this is the place to be.
The cottage itself is well equipped, clean and comfortable. If there was a down side it would be the midges – take insect repellent!
This is a fantastic base for exploring Mid Wales – I had no idea the area was so beautiful – a well kept secret. See photo’s attached 

Thoroughly recommend the cottage, charming and well fitted, no phone reception or internet access so no excuse not to relax. No DAB reception but we enjoyed the cricket throught through Sky connection. The location is beautiful, being sited in the woods next to a stream. You can walk from here or drive out to find others, we did both. All are worth it, go to the tea rooms and watch the birds feeding whilst recovering after a good walk. Suggest all have sufficient anti mozzy cream!
Imagine it will be very cozy in the winter, we couldn't find an excuse to light the stove!
We will be back.

The cottage was in a great location for accessing places for days out and provide you with exciting mountain bike trails BUT the cottage came with a lot of problems.

Firstly, the forest the cottages are situated in, one big demolition sight. Right behind our cottage, (Tawny Owl) all we could hear was the forest being destroyed and machinery coming and going past our doorstep. (See photos) So the peace and quiet that we were expecting didn't come. Also the poor forest looked a state where the diggers had been working and wildlife was rather hard to find as a result.
We then had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting Christine, the owners mother, which we found to be lacking customer service skills considerably. She was rude, short and unfriendly and we felt very awkward when trying to acquire information about trail routes. The owner Mary, well when we did see her, just looked and walked away, like she wasn't interested in speaking to us at all. We would have liked an introduction and a friendly face and chat.
The cottage was left for us in a dusty, cobweb state, not pleasant at all. The toilet was disgusting and to top it off there was a family of mice living above the bedrooms. When we tried to get to sleep, they constantly were chewing and running around above our heads.

We thought the cottage had so much potential but because of the problems above, left us feeling glad to be leaving :(

We are very upset to read these comments. The cottages are certainly not situated in ‘one big demolition site’. The cottages are actually situated in a family run 400 acre private working woodland with an abundance of wildlife, as commented on by a countless number of guests in our visitor books.

We always describe this as a working forest and it is managed to a plan approved by the Forestry Commission and the Forestry Stewardship Council. It is a first generation forest planted in 1967 with a view to providing a utilisable crop of timber. Thinning has been carried out at 5 yearly intervals since it was 20 years old. The stand in front of Tawny owl has twice won a gold medal in the conifer class Royal Welsh Show Woodlands Competition. 100 years ago timber was extracted by horse, 50 years ago by chainsaw and tractor winch and currently we rely on Harvesters and Forwarders. Over the next 10 years the forest will be restocked both by planting and natural regeneration. The comment ‘the poor forest looked a state’ is absurd, considering the woodland is an award winning forest.

I am sorry you did not get the peace and quiet you wanted. The guests who stayed before you commented in the visitor book – ‘We thought Siskin was good last year but Tawny owl is even quieter’.

There is an abundance of wildlife at Trallwm Forest Cottages, the guests who stayed before you commented in the visitor book –‘we have seen Red Kite, Raven, Buzzard, Redstart, Flycatchers, Siskins, Jays, Male and Female Greater spotted Woodpeckers, Green Woodpeckers, Grey wagtail, Male and Female Chaffinch, Dippers, Wood warblers…’

I’m sorry I didn’t formally introduce myself, I did wave and say hello. As you can understand we have 8 holiday cottages, a café, mountain bike trails and we were building a new playground area so I was probably a bit rushed off my feet. Also you mentioned in the visitor book that you spoke to George who you found ‘pleasant and friendly’ (as written in the visitors book). Our business is very much a family business where we all pitch in together.

I apologise you found the cottage in a poor state, this is rare to our usually high standards and this will be addressed immediately.

Our holiday cottages have been operating for over 30 years, with most of our guests being returning customers.

Kind Regards
Mary and family
