“A Foodie's heaven!”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

We stayed here for two nights with a Buyagift Voucher which was a Christmas present from our kids. We were checked in by the chef and owner Mary and stayed in the Chapel Room which had a very comfortable bed and was of an adequate size for a couple of nights stay. Our voucher included dinner on the first night which we were able to choose from the a la carte menu and the food was excellent. I started with the pea mousse with Carmarthen ham and my husband had the smoked eel then we both chose the rump of lamb which was perfectly cooked and very tasty. We enjoyed the meal so much we booked their gourmet menu for the following evening which included 4 courses together with wine pairings - what a treat it was too! We started with wild mushrooms on brioche and this was followed by fillet of beef, excellently cooked and presented, then goats cheese and finally a melt in the mouth chocolate fondant. All the wines were chosen to complement each course and served by Mary's husband Alan. We only had the full breakfast on one morning as we had to leave early to attend a funeral but Mary kindly arranged for some toast and coffee to be laid on for us very early on our last morning.
To sum up, it is an excellent restaurant with comfortable ensuite rooms run by a very charming couple and we have already recommended it to a relative who is a foodie!

We arrived and were greeted by Mary Gilchrist a lovely character made you feel special and very welcome. We were in the bridge room which overlooked the river, a lovely large room, excellent shower and the towels were fabulous none of the small hotel bath towels, they actually wrapped you up, amazing. For the evening meal we were greeted by Alan who was attentive and helpful. The food was amazing the lamb so tender, the following night I opted for the pea mousse as a starter not sure what it would be like but it was wonderful. Thank you both for a lovely stay would not hesitate to recommend to anyone, hope we can visit again soon.

We booked a two night break at the Carlton Riverside with a Buy a Gift voucher. We were looking to visit the Gigrin Farm Red Kite centre in Rhayader and after seeing the Carlton Riverside was only 35 minutes from there decided that would be a good choice.
It was not until after we had booked that we saw the reviews and thought we were in for a treat.
We were checked in by Mary Ann who is a real character. We have a few things in common so it was good to chat about them.
The room overlooked the river and was good in size although a little dated. The bed was also very comfortable and plenty of room.
The deal included an evening meal on the first night and it was excellent. We were shown into the lounge for a pre dinner drink by Alan who is the opposite to Mary Ann as he is quite quiet but is very attentive.
We both opted for the crab and lobster lasagne with brown shrimps as a started and it was delicious. we then decided a we were in Wales we would try the lamb as it is locally sourced with all the other ingredients. It was also excellent. I was going to try Mary Ann's famous sticky toffee puddings but wouldn't have done it justice as I was already quite full.
Maybe next time.
Breakfast each morning was served by Linda who looked after us and made us feel welcome
Thank you Mary Ann and Alan for looking after us so well. We'll be back

Llanwrtyd Wells is a lovely little place - the smallest town in Britain in fact! We happened across it when we received a red letter day weekend break as a gift. On the list of all the places, we thought the Carlton Riverside looked the nicest, backed up by some excellent reviews. We weren't disappointed.

The Carlton Riverside is a restaurant with rooms overlooking the River Irfon. It has four rooms of varying sizes - we were in the Irfon room, described as a very small double. Well it was more than big enough for us! It has a comfy bed and ingenious space-saving clothes storage, plus a large bathroom with excellent shower. It also has lovely views over the river, which you can hear babbling away at night - lovely!

Mary and Alan are wonderful hosts, and Mary's food - served in the restaurant overlooking the river- is delicious. The sea bass with squid-ink pasta and lobster veloute was a stand-out dish. The mushroom brioche was also very good! Alan is very knowledgeable about wine, and the restaurant has an extensive wine list. Mary is great fun, and was very helpful with advice on what to do in the area. She recommended that we visit Llyn Brianne, a reservoir about half an hour's drive away. This is well worth a visit.

Llanwrtyd Wells is very well placed for some lovely walks, straight out of the front door of the hotel. We downloaded some walks from Leaping Stiles, which is worth a look as it has some very good guided walks (particularly the one around the Garn).

All in all a lovely trip - we will be back!

Room Tip: The Irfon room is not THAT small. Plus it has lovely views.

Alan and Mary Gilchrist are fantastic hosts. We booked an overnight stay with evening meal and breakfast included after watching Mary on the Great British Menu earlier in the year. The food was just as good as we had hoped it would be (especially the Pea Mousse served with Carmarthen ham which was divine). The other highlight for me was the sticky toffee pudding which has featured in a book collating the top recipes of UK chefs. My only minor criticism is that the menu was not as diverse as was featured on the website when we visited. The breakfast the next morning was also superb. Llanwrtyd Wells is a very picturesque location and would have been a good base to explore the surrounding countryside if we had had more time. Overall the visit was excellent value for money and I can highly recommend a stay here.

We had booked a table for 7.30 but arrived 45 mis early. No problem, we took a seat in the bar and ordered drinks. At about 7.15 we were given menus and ordered food and wine. We were later taken to the dining room and served hot home made rolls and butter. Totally unexpected and delicious.
I had fillet steak gremalata and my wife had rump of lamb. My steak was the best I have ever tasted and my wife's lamb was also delicious. The food here is excellent and incredible value for money. I look forward to returning, possibly for a special tasting weekend.

Room Tip: Have not stayed here but look forward to doing so in the not too distant future

We recently returned to this fantastic restaurant with rooms tucked away in the heart of Wales. Having sampled Carlton Riverside's hospitality and Mary Ann's cooking several times before this time we put our taste buds in her hands and opted for a two night gourmet break accompanied by Alan's choices of perfectly matched wines. We were delighted. Not only were we relieved of the difficult "whose having what" conversations we were rewarded with perfectly balanced menus on both nights. It is so difficult to single out dishes but if we must, the starters on night two Cod fillet fettuccini, spinach and lobster veloute and a tie for deserts between the deepest berried summer pud and the carpaccio of pineapple with passion fruit sorbet.
Our late booking meant we were allocated the smallest bedroom but with its clever design and larger than average bathroom this was perfect for us. The bed was "just right".
There a loads of lovely gentle walks and plenty of more challenging ones and places to chill but if you are looking for a retail experience you will need to travel further afield.
We always feel at ease here and this time the good company of fellow guests was a bonus.
Looking forward to our next getaway.
