We are were absolutely delighted with our ‘Gourmet Break’ at the Carlton Riverside. This is a fixed menu matched with wines at each of the four courses and, in addition, a drink of choice before dinner and tea or coffee to follow with some modest petit fours. Other than forewarning Mary Ann about particular dislikes and/or allergies we were more than content to be utterly spoilt by her outstanding culinary skills and imaginative ‘personalized’ menu. Hitherto we’d never experienced a ‘bespoke’ menu that was further enriched by the impeccable choice of wines by Dr. Alan Gilchrist. Over the years we’ve eaten in other ‘high-end’ restaurants and enjoyed the ministrations of some excellent sommeliers and, without reservation, the Carlton Riverside is up there among the very best. Equally pleasing, for us, this is a tasteful ‘bijou’ establishment - overlooking the river - where we could imagine that local diners are just as well received and comfortable as visitors, like us, on a pilgrimage to experience the legendary Mary Ann at first hand. Our double room – also with views of the river – was well appointed and comfortable. Breakfast, included in the package, was very good as were Mary Ann’s creamy scrambled eggs and homemade marmalade. In short, we enjoyed everything about our visit, judged it excellent value for money, and are very much looking forward to returning on another occasion. It would be a pleasure to meet Mary Ann & Alan Gilchrist in any setting.
