5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2013

Stayed one night as part of a golf break package, room was clean and tidy, food was lovely, bit pricey but worth the money, very close to the village centre where there are plenty of good bars, would reccomend to anyone

Room Tip: all rooms are good

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2013

I stayed here after a family dinner in January 2013. The food was good, served fairly quickly (we were a 20+ group) although we'd ordered in advance. Service was good. The room we ate in lacked atmosphere due to the lighting/decoration but was private and comfortable.

We paid £65 for a double room B&B. I felt this was expensive for what we got, but it wasn't terrible for Builth. The hotel was underoccupied that night (maybe one other room filled) but despite this we were put in a room on the first floor directly above the bar. It looked as if it had been decorated in the late 80s, but was in reasonable condition. It was however noisy. When I went down to the bar at 12:40am to ask when it closed I was told "don't know, could be 1, could be 2". There was an offer to turn the music down, but as we could hear the darts team quite clearly we opted to move rooms. We were then moved to a room on the second floor, which despite being really cold (heating was off) was much nicer. It had clearly been more recently refurbished.

Breakfast in the morning was good.

Overall this was a reasonable stay but the poor planning/management left a slightly bitter taste to the trip. Why the hotel don't fill up their quietest and nicest rooms first I do not know.

Room Tip: The bar is noisy on Friday nights so avoid rooms directly above it.

Staying in a remarkable B&B, The Smithfield Farm B&B (highly recommended), we needed to eat. As it turns out its not as easy as it sounds in Builth Wells, parking is a real headache and the one way system, whilst probably necessary in this small town, doesn't help vistors negotiate an apparant dearth of eating establishments. However The Greyhound proved a grand choice serving a great pint of real ale and a decent and tasty rib eye rare, as ordered with good humoured staff in a convivial atmosphere. One could do much worse than this establishment if you like a good steak and a great pint, but take your own Dijon as this condiment is unavailable in these parts! Malcolm S Stott

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2012

We popped in on our way home. We'd been in the bar in March 2012 and some of our friends had eaten and the food looked amazing. We weren't disappointed, both the service and food was excellent. We all had a main course and some had a sweet but the starters looked really appealing and we can't wait to go back and try. My wife had the gammon (came with two eggs and pineapple) and it looked amazing and each of the steaks we had were all cooked perfectly.

Went to have a meal last night at the Greyhound hotel. Place was nearly empty, just one other couple. Unfortunately when it's quiet there's no atmosphere. Had a nice meal there, and reasonable prices too.

Four senior "golfers" from the Southampton area returned to Ali's(and Rich's) hotel for a third time..Nothing much had changed, still excellent, varied food served by friendly staff.Overall prices much the same as when we first visited in 2009 - fantastic value!.No problem in recommending this establishment, we shall certainly return, particularly if the weather is anything like that which we experienced in May!
