“Strange place”
Reviewed 16 April 2014 via mobile

This hostel is very very good on security but does not leave cutlery in the kitchen, you have to ask for it. Living space looked really good but the pool table was very uneven and the reception kept playing music which made it hard to watch the tv.
overall it's an ok place but could easily improve by simple things like putting toilet paper and soap out and not charging as much as 15 pesos for towel hire.

I liked it here and would certainly recommend it. Big rooms, nice beds, great hot showers, a proper building (not cabin esque building as is typical), staff helpful in recommending a restaurant, decent bedding, good chill out areas.

We booked this hostel on booking.com prior to our arrival in El Chalten. It seemed to look alright in the photos out of the 3 we had to choose from. Everything was verrrry booked up.

This is a profit making business not Hostel.

First impressions were bad. We walked in and it was clean and looked nice then we waited in a queue for the reception for about 20 minutes. The hostel is huge and they don't have enough staff for busy times - such as when buses arrive with new guests etc. We finally got to the desk and we were told check in would be 12 not 11am as advertised. We thought that was alright because infact not everything always goes to plan the guests before may have checked out later etc etc however it wasn't actually until 1:30pm that I managed to get us our keys, by asking in a bit of a moody way "is the room still not ready?". We wished they has just said check in was 2-3 then we would have just gone for a walk or something instead of waiting around on the next to nothing wifi!!! The lady on the desk wasn't the friendliest. She didn't tell us anything about el chalten or the hostel. She didn't walk us to the room, show us the kitchen, tell us about the cutlery you have to collect from reception first for you entire stay and guard with your life or you'll be charged. Infact just charged us over the odds with a stupidly high rate on Argentinian pesos.

The room was fine, it was clean and the beds were alright comfy wise. Our bedroom also had a lovely view, that was the most going for it.

We ended up relying on other guests to tell us about the hostel. They have a huuuuuge kitchen but guests aren't aloud that one, we have to use the crap one with nothing in it. On photos we always check the kitchen to save money on cooking and this one in the photos looked fine. It was the worst !! It was filthy, the fridges had mouldy food in, the drains were clogged up with disgusting food, the bins were always full and the floor and tables were sticky constantly (unless you got in there just after the cleaners had made it useable again). I know this may be down to the guests but I strongly believe it's disgusting because it's far to small and inaccessible for the amount of guests at the hostel. There are like 4 plates, 2 pans (If your lucky), one spatular and some stinky sponges to wash up- no wonder people didn't bother. Also it's laid out in one line so impossible for more than one person to cook at any one time in an orderly fashion.

The cherry on the cake was no toilet paper !

They should advertise that the don't provide basic utensils, toilet paper, decent kitchen or have any sort of atmosphere.

We really didn't enjoy our stay here and will not recommend to anyone

As mentioned earlier it's clean and spacious .. Nicely located in walking distance with everything ..
Atmosphere ... Hmmm ... Guess people make the atmosphere so I'm not gonna blame the hostel for that..
They can't really ask each n every guest to be a bit social please.. If you see a solo traveller please sit with him/her .. Make her coffee blah blah ...

Come on people ... Stop acting like spoilt kids here... Seriously !!!

It's a big hostel for sure.. Coz it does gets busy in summers so need more place...

Yes the kitchen is not equipped properly and u have to ask for knives n forks..
But the reason being is that some travellers in the past have stolen cutlery from the hostel ..

It's a nice place and offers what a hostel in such a remote location should do ..

I was staying in a dorm with six beds and own facilities. Toilet and shower are separated.
There is nothing to complain about this place except for a lack of atmosphere. Yet, the hostel had the cleanest and simply the best bathroom in my three weeks in Brazil and Patagonia.

Breakfast for 45 ar $ was very simple and not that great. I had it my first day there but not anymore on my second.

If you want a bid of privacy and look for a rather quite place the hostel is fine.

Btw the driver of the 18h bus to else calafate rests here. So if you are staying here or nearby you can catch the bus there at around 17h and don't have to bring your stuff all the way to the bus terminal.

As a place to stay, there is not much wrong with this hostel. It's one of the cleanest hostels I've stayed in. The lockers were huge, the bathroom was nice and big (and clean). The staff were helpful and friendly. Location is good. I was in a 6-bed dorm with ensuite and it was nice and big. In fact, I had the room to myself the whole time I was there (three nights), so appreciated the space and privacy.

Having said all of that, this hostel lacks the hostel feel. As a solo traveller, it's not a place to meet people. There is no communal vibe or homeliness to it at all. It's a very big space and it kind of feels like a cafeteria or something just as soul-less. If you were there with a group of friends, it would be fine as somewhere to stay, but I would not recommend this hostel if you are after somewhere social.

As some other people have commented, they do not have cutlery in the kitchen. I think you can hire it with a 30 peso deposit but when I asked for a fork, they just gave it to me.

Finding it hard to rate this place, so giving it a mediocre 3 stars!

How do you describe a place that lacks all atmosphere. The only positive thing to say about this hostel is that it is clean. Ever been to a hospital? Well, that is how it feels. The kitchen doesn't even supply a knife or a spoon. Bring everything. If you want to go outside all doors are locked except the main reception area doors. As this place is huge this means quite a walk through the depressing hallways.
